Designed for a couple or a solo traveller, it's not all style over substance – it's a perfectly inviting, comfortable home from home. Twenty minutes on foot from Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, and El Retiro Park, this apartment is well-placed to explore. Many shops, restaurants, and metro stations are nearby, as well as some of Madrid's most famous markets. When you're not sightseeing, this central home is practical and comfortable. We love the exposed brick and stone walls, though it does mean it's a little dark. The kitchen is the ideal size to rustle up lighter fare, but we suspect you'd prefer dining out.

This home is far from a pristine condition, but we're sure you can spot the wear and tear from the photos. The exposed wooden beams and the older-looking elements help create a special kind of charm that's hard to find in Madrid these days. The Open Library might also have one of the finest kitchens we've seen, equipped with enough dishes space to cook for a small army. The fact that it's also located within walking distance from the Prado and Puerta del sol makes this home a great, relaxed stay.

The most remarkable thing about Espinas is the quiet. Despite having three balconies, and being in the middle of Lavapiés, the street it looks onto is actually fairly calm. The building is old, and a lot of the original structure features prominently in the flat, which has been designed to complement the space, rather than dominate it. There is some pretty loud wallpaper though, which stops the design from falling into the dreaded ‘neutral’ category.


Espinas

Based around an open living area, Peaks & Valleys is well proportioned and generally a sociable space. It’s not in pristine condition, as evidenced by the marks on the walls, but that’s an aesthetic consideration, and doesn’t make the home any less comfortable. The metro station in Lavapiés is close to the flat, and while the square outside is a little rough around the edges, there are several lively bars and restaurants.


Peaks & Valleys

You’ll hit the bullseye in this cool modern apartment, bang in the centre of Madrid's hip and happening Embajadores area. A bright space with tastefully exposed brickwork and an American-style kitchen, you’ll find plenty here to make yourself feel at home. Sip a coffee on the iron balcony railings looking out at the street below, or start the day slowly by kicking back on the white leather sofa with a book in hand. The sizeable bedroom is well-lit, the bathroom fully provisioned and pleasantly decorated with marble-look tiles, and there’s even a designated workspace for those travelling on business. But it’s the apartment’s location in the central hub of Madrid that will truly excite you, as you’re within walking distance from everything fun and artistic, including the Prado Museum, the Rastro flea market and the Plaza Mayor, as well as endless bars, eateries, theatres and shops too. The first thing that strikes you with this home is its lofty ceilings. Up the staircase, you'll find the mezzanine bedroom, which overlooks the living space. We also love all the original paintings  throughout the home - this host has style!

Puerta de Toledo metro station is nearby too, making seeing further-afield sights as easy as can be. 

The Light of His Eye

This minimalist home's most prominent feature is the heavy use of drapes. You'll see them separating the master bedroom from the living room, the workspace, and the kitchen has its own stylish set too. True, there is more of a hotel vibe here, but at the same time, this is a sleek, well-designed and super comfortable home — not to mention the excellent traffic links to the rest of Spain via Atocha station.

With exposed brickwork and wooden beams, this home is full of character. Granted, some of the rooms are on the cosy side and at full occupancy, two guests will sleep on the bed in the living room. That said, it’s a small price to pay for this home’s enviable location. A stroll in one direction takes you to the Prado Museum and Botanical Gardens.
