The most remarkable thing about Espinas is the quiet. Despite having three balconies, and being in the middle of Lavapiés, the street it looks onto is actually fairly calm. The building is old, and a lot of the original structure features prominently in the flat, which has been designed to complement the space, rather than dominate it. There is some pretty loud wallpaper though, which stops the design from falling into the dreaded ‘neutral’ category.


Espinas

This unique loft apartment is perfect for a family, a small group of friends, or two couples looking for a stylish and comfortable base in Madrid. It’s in a vibrant part of the city, close to restaurants and shops, and within walking distance of many of the key attractions – Plaza Mayor and the Prado Museum are less than twenty minutes away on foot. If you don’t feel like walking, hop on the metro at nearby Embajadores. The apartment is modern and attractive, equipped with everything needed for a city break.

Based around an open living area, Peaks & Valleys is well proportioned and generally a sociable space. It’s not in pristine condition, as evidenced by the marks on the walls, but that’s an aesthetic consideration, and doesn’t make the home any less comfortable. The metro station in Lavapiés is close to the flat, and while the square outside is a little rough around the edges, there are several lively bars and restaurants.


Peaks & Valleys

Nestled in the bustling heart of the city, this Lavapiés apartment is just the spot for those who want interior design and location. From here, you can walk to El Retiro, Mercado Antón Martín and Museo Nacional del Prado, as well as all the city’s top eateries. The apartment accommodates five, with three sleeping on sofa beds, so though perhaps a little compact, the flexibility is there if you need it. And while you’ll need to climb some stairs to reach this fourth-floor pad, the stylish interiors and little balcony are a treat after a long day of sightseeing.

It can be difficult to find accommodation suited to larger groups in the heart of the city, but this smart apartment will tick all the boxes. Or if you fancy taking the city by foot, you're within a half-an-hour walk from most of the main sites, including Plaza Mayor and El Retiro Park. Plus, staying in a residential area nearly always means more bang for your buck and in this home, you get a beautiful large terrace with ample seating for relaxing, entertaining, and soaking up the sun. 

The terrace is accessible from practically every room in the apartment – the kitchen, living room, and bedroom all have a handy patio door. And these doors let in a beautiful light which illuminates the whole home, namely the tall gallery white walls. Sleek, comfortable furniture and artistic decor make this home a beautiful place to stay, but we imagine you'll spend most of your time on your terrace or exploring the city. You're a twenty-five-minute walk from what's considered the gate to the historic centre – the Puerta del Sol. Soak in the grand architecture, a blend of neoclassical and neo-gothic. But you don't even have to go that far to enjoy Madrid's rich cultural scene, you're just a nine-minute walk to Reina Sofia Museum, Spain's national museum of 20th-century art. The luscious Royal Botanical Gardens are just a fourteen-minute walk away, too. There's so much to explore in Spain's capital, but you'll love coming home to your oasis in the city. Channel your inner chef and enjoy homecooked meals and a few glasses of wine around the outdoor dining table, or head out to one of the area's many laid-back tapas bars.

The Delicacies

Homes in Madrid often strike a careful balance between playful colours and minimalist features, and Pumpkin Flower is a great example of Madrileño chic. The natural light is great and the neighbourhood you'll be staying in, Lavapiès, is one of the hottest places to stay if you're into world cuisine and urban art. While the insides of this home are immaculate, the building itself could do with a fresh lick of paint, especially the hallway. If this isn't too much of a turn-off for you, Pumpkin Flower is a true find.

With exposed brickwork and wooden beams, this home is full of character. Granted, some of the rooms are on the cosy side and at full occupancy, two guests will sleep on the bed in the living room. That said, it’s a small price to pay for this home’s enviable location. A stroll in one direction takes you to the Prado Museum and Botanical Gardens. Head the opposite way, and you’ll reach the iconic Plaza Mayor. And for trips further afield, the nearby metro is waiting to whisk you away.

With a fabulous location in the heart of the theatre district, this home will appeal to culture vultures. It's situated just behind Teatro Nuevo Apolo. Art lovers, on the other hand, can head to "the walk of art" (just over ten minutes on foot), where you'll find the Museo del Prado, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. 

Madrid's most famous and central square, Puerta del Sol, is nine minutes on foot. The Casa de Correos here houses the regional government of the Comunidad de Madrid. There are several statues, too – the most notable is the statue of a bear looking for fruit on a madroño (strawberry tree) – the city's official symbol.

Nestled in the vibrant Lavapiés neighbourhood, where you’ll find medieval streets lined with lively Indian restaurants, authentic Spanish tavernas and cultural centres, lies this minimalist apartment. Granted, it isn’t the most soulful, but if you need a practical base, it fits the brief. Since it’s a studio, all four guests will share the space – two of which will be sleeping on the sofa bed. And while the terrace is somewhat overlooked by the neighbouring buildings, it’s still a lovely spot for a post-sightseeing glass of wine.
