The apartment is minimal and not the most soulful, but all the mod cons are here for a practical stay. While there are sleeping arrangements for four, with a pull-out double and a sofa bed, we think this pad is better suited to two. And while the balcony views aren’t so inspired, it’s still a great spot for sharing a drink after a day of sightseeing.

You've got everything you need for extended stays here, and despite this being a studio apartment, the raisable bed offers a bit more space during the day.  Plus, convenience is on your side with Urgel Station just a short stroll away, granting you swift access to the heart of Madrid in under twenty minutes, along with the several parks within walking distance.

This simple Madrid apartment in Opañel isn't winning any design awards and you'll be sleeping on a raisable bed, but it has everything needed for an extended stay – we think it's ideal for remote workers. The area is local in feel and certainly isn't glamorous, but it does offer a slice of life if you prefer to be far away from touristy spaces. That said, Urgel Station is a short walk away – from here, you can be in the centre of Madrid in less than twenty minutes.

Being so close to the city, you can easily drive or hop on the metro from Urgel, just a short walk away. Back at home, there are all the mod cons you need, with a laptop-friendly table for remote workers. Keep in mind the bed is a Murphy bed, so you’ll need to transform the space come bedtime, and while we think this pad is best suited to two, there is a handy sofa bed for a third and fourth guest.

We challenge you to find a prettier apartment overlooking the Royal Palace of Madrid. This place is a real showstopper, with twin Juliet balconies opening over Plaza de Oriente Gardens. Bold, bright and just downright beautiful, it's dripping in character thanks to ornate cornice, traditional shuttered windows and classical furnishing. A riot of elegant colours and patterns, it couldn't be further from modern minimalism if it tried.

Once you've arrived and stared out of the window for long enough to take it all in, choose between the two pretty bedrooms – one decorated in calming greens, the other in vibrant terracotta. Another fabulous use of light comes from the shuttered windows to your private balcony. With three sets of rich, wooden folding doors, you can step out to the railings with a glass of tempranillo after supper to watch the city light up at nightfall. Ventura Rodriguez metro station is a short walk away, though you can also stroll to Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace in about twenty minutes. Back home, there's a practical yet cosy living space. The kitchen is well-appointed for rustling up light bites, while three bedrooms offer respite after a long day on your feet. If you're looking for a laid-back stay, this pad is a great choice.

Easy access to Delicias metro stop and Atocha Station makes zipping to and from the centre a breeze – just be sure to pack earplugs, since you'll be right in the hustle and bustle here.

In the heart of Madrid, just a few metres away from Plaza Mayor and within walking distance of Puerta del Sol, this city apartment couldn't be better located. Keep in mind that some noise should be expected here, but we think it's a small price to pay for this central spot. You'll find a great selection of restaurants on your doorstep if you'd like to sample the local cuisine, but if you'd prefer to dine in, the kitchen is well-equipped for homemade tapas.

We loved the industrial-chic interiors – it’s all poured concrete floors, exposed brick walls and reclaimed timber beams. After the plates are cleared, plan your itinerary at the dining table. We recommend starting with the Royal Palace, a mere ten-minute walk from your doorstep. If you’d like to stretch your legs a little further, it’s a thirty-minute stroll to El Retiro Park. Pause for a coffee on the buzzing Calle Cava Baja before picking a spot to bask in the sunshine beside El Retiro Lake.
