This breezy flat takes the meaning of beachfront to a whole new level. It sits just above the sands of Playa Silgar – and trust us, when we say you'll spend every minute soaking up the scenery, we mean it. Mornings here begin with a cup of coffee on the terrace, listening to the waves and watching the tide roll in, while nights end with a glass of Cava as the sun slowly dips below the horizon. We're utterly in love with this reimagined farmhouse-style property located just outside of the idyllic old fishing village of Esposende. From its sunny yellow facade complete with quaint panelled windows and traditional terracotta roof tiles to its elegant interior that retains many of its original, rustic features – not to mention the beautiful modern step-down swimming pool – we think it offers something truly unique and special for your holiday in this often-overlooked part of Portugal.

The indoor spaces of this home feel impressive and grand, and yet manage to exude a kind of homely warmth that's welcoming and comfortable. The bedrooms, in particular, are a favourite of ours. Awake as the gentle morning light begins to seep in through those large French windows with stained glass detailing and feel immediately enveloped in the majesty of these rooms, as the high ceilings and gorgeous furnishings create a sense of luxury. Or, make the short 30-minute drive to the historic city of Oporto – the centre of which is classified as a World Heritage Site. The sand beaches of this part of the Portuguese coastline are under four kilometres away too, so grab the suncream and a beach towel and get out there for a day of sun, sea, and unbridled relaxation (as well as some high-octane watersports if you like). This carefully renovated country house, where old and new seamlessly combine, provides you with everything you could need for an unforgettable stay in this picturesque part of northern Portugal.

This restored farmhouse sits in the nature-rich Portuguese region of Minho, encircled by valleys, sparkling rivers, plenty of cycling routes, and historical towns. You get a beautiful slice of that breathtaking nature from your countryside oasis. 

Whether you’re playing football on the soft grass, admiring the view from the terrace, or listening to the birds chatter while lying around the pool, nature is all around. You’re even welcomed by bougainvillea and cypress trees as you approach the stone brick home.

You’ll first notice the home’s traditional façade. Made up of three houses, two of which have long histories – the main house was a baker's, and the annexe, now a games room, was a distillery. Make use of the original bread and pizza oven for unforgettable meals, and whittle away evenings playing pool and drinking local wine. 

There’s plenty to keep you entertained here, but perhaps all you really want is to catch up on your book beside the pool. Let the hours drift by, breathing in the fresh country air while topping up your tan. Come dusk, the place to be is your balcony – nothing beats watching the sun dip into the sea. 

When it’s time to explore, you’re less than a mile from Afife and its beachy cafes, surf shops, seafood restaurants, and long stretch of sugary white sand. When you’re not catching waves or relaxing on the beach, hop on a hiking trail to one of the nearby waterfalls and discover the rugged mountain range.

Inside, the traditional features may not be to everyone's taste, but if you ask us, the outside area is by far the home's biggest draw. From the dining terrace to the private swimming pool and garden, you'll have ample space to bask in the Portuguese sunshine and remote setting. A car is a necessity here, but the charming towns of Ponte de Lima and Viana do Castelo are both a short drive away.

Make the most of the Afife coastline from this luxurious villa and ensure the holiday of a lifetime. Nestled in a small village, and just a short drive from the jewel of Costa Verse, Viana do Castelo, this stunning villa sits in the verdant hills above the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a short distance to the powdery sands of Praia de Afife, the border between Spain’s Galicia, the adventure-packed rivers of the Rio Lima estuary and the countryside hiking trails in the Lima valley.

Inside, the space is dominated by an expansive, wooden-beamed living area where you’ll find an elegant dining table for sharing bacalhau fish stew dinners and a contemporary lounge boasting ambient lighting for cosy nights in sharing aperitifs. The sleek kitchen has plenty of prep space, courtesy of a glossy island, which keeps the space social. A second dining room leads off the kitchen and out onto the patio – we’ll be honest, this one’s our favourite – perfect for alfresco dinners together under pink-hued sunsets.

Staying outside, there are plenty of spaces for every member to unwind. The patio is decked out with lounge chairs, perfect for soaking up the sun before plunging into the pristine pool for a cooling dip. We have to say we think the garden is the ideal spot to begin mornings over fresh coffee and locally bought pastéis de nata and to end evenings with caipirinha cocktails under the starlit sky. 

Soul of Afife 

Surrounded by well-maintained lawns and terraces, this charming family home in O Barro is in a lovely location to explore the Spanish countryside. The house features some great amenities such as a large first-floor terrace with picturesque views of the area, a private pool and ping-pong table. For day trips, take an eight-minute drive to visit the spa town of Mondariz Balneario, where you'll find some restaurants, scenic footpaths and a sandy beach with sheltered waters for swimming. If you fancy spending the day by the seaside, Cesantes is just a forty-minute car ride away.

There are plenty of grounds to explore, including a pond (our favourite area), mature woodland and numerous paths leading into the countryside. Nestled in a wonderful rural landscape, there’s plenty to see and do. Ponte de Lima, one of Portugal’s most historic towns, with its ornate squares, cobbled alleyways, and vast riverside Monday market, is just 13 kilometres away. This magical home in a stunning rural location has to be seen to be believed. Nestled in the Minho region of northern Portugal, it's around an hour from Porto, with the city of Braga just 10 miles away, but all you'll see here are green hills in every direction. 

Set on a hillside, your home has incredible gardens that go up and up, at one point disappearing into woodland. With a number of lawns and terraces, as well as a beautiful private pool and terrace, you won't be short of outside space – or somewhere for some quiet reading away from the group.

Inside, this traditional home has bags of character, with exposed stone walls, an eclectic mix of statement furniture and plenty of colourful wall art. A cosy living room features a log burner for the cooler months and there's a practical kitchen with all the mod-cons. And here you can choose to eat at the antique dining table indoors or out on the beautiful covered terrace.
