This home is a rare find – it has a peaceful and private setting, and yet it's just a few minutes walk from the historic city of La Orotava. Surrounded by a plantation of avocados, relax on the multiple terraces (five no less), cool off from the Tenerife sun in the infinity waterfall pool with its Atlantic Ocean vistas or unwind in the hot tub. 

We love the professionally designed gardens – our favourite spot is the yoga/meditation corner –  very zen. There's a fantastic outdoor kitchen, too – cook up a feast while you enjoy the fabulous views of Mount Teide, the forests and hills. As sunset arrives, pick some mint for your mojitos from the herb garden or feel free to pick a lemon for your G&T. As the light continues to fade, gather around the designer fire pit. 

Or, on cooler evenings, cosy up in front of the wood-burning stove indoors. Here, you'll find gorgeous beamed, vaulted ceilings, as well as original pictures and sculptures.

There's plenty to do out and about too. Hire a bike and explore the terrain (many professional cycling teams train here). If you prefer something a bit less energetic, there are three golf courses within easy reach, including one designed by Seve Ballestros. The nearest beach is 3 kilometres away, along with the popular resort beaches and Lido in Puerto de la Cruz, while La Orotava has an array of cafes, shops, bars and restaurants within walking distance.

Situated within a villa complex less than ten minutes' drive from Maspolamas, this recently renovated home will sing to those fond of contemporary design.

Large windows and glass doors bring plenty of natural light into the interior and this asset works particularly well with the wealth of reflective surfaces and stark white walls. There's a preference for minimalism in everything from the sleek kitchen to the pared-back approach to decoration, and we think the host has nailed it.

Besides, you might not actually be spending all that much time indoors, what with the swimming pool out in the garden, along with the barbecue and covered terrace complete with a lounge and alfresco dining table. Here, it's welcomingly easy to make the most of Gran Canaria's year-round warmth.
