After a long day of showing off your skills on the ski slopes, the top priority is getting somewhere toasty and warm as quickly as possible. At Vuokatti Ski Centre in the middle of Finland, this apartment will help you do just that.

Not only is there a fireplace in the living room that you can huddle around, but there's also a glass-doored sauna in the bathroom — also handy for sweating out any toxins if you overdid it at the apres-ski bars the night before

Aside from that, we also like the minimalist kitchen with sleek white surfaces that are big enough for whipping up hearty feasts and the balcony that looks out to peaceful forest views. During the summer months, you can even fire up the gas barbecue in this space and dine alfresco.

Given that the home sits in the middle of a ski resort, the distance to the slopes is pretty important and thankfully, you can reach them in a little over five minutes' walk here. If you're looking for a little variety, there's a theme park less than five minutes' drive away and the banks of Lake Jäätiönlampi in about half that time.

Cocoa by the Fire

Situated on the banks of Lake Kiltua, this cosy cabin is as comfortable as it is stylish. Although it's a typical lakeside retreat on the outside, step through the front door and you'll find a thoroughly modern and chic living space. Cooking up a storm is easy in the fully-equipped kitchen, and come evening, the all-important wood-burner will keep you feeling toasty and warm. Make the most of the beautiful lake views and enjoy alfresco meals on the deck, grilling up a storm as the unforgettable night sky twinkles overhead. And you can't have a Finnish getaway without a steam in the on-site sauna – we think it's the perfect way to end the day.

Those seeking an active holiday can enjoy hiking, fishing and berry picking nearby. Take the boat out onto the lake and soak up the sunshine, or for a bit more action, the owner can organise guided hunting, fishing and trekking trips. In the warmer months, wander over to Jyrkänkoski Ironworks and check out the museum, cafe and summer theatre or, for ultimate relaxation, rent a mobile hot tub and soak under the stars.
