Skiing in Finland is an experience all lovers of the slopes should enjoy at some point, with thick snow and fairytale forests. This mountain home is within walking distance of the excellent Masto runs, with views far across the rocky landscape. Within a striking modern building, it's stone and dark grey cladding is an imposing sight. Inside, you'll be wowed by its floor-to-ceiling windows, its double height main room and its stylish Scandi design features. Warm up around the fire, pull up a chair and read by the window, or treat yourself to time alone in the private sauna. If you're here for the skiing, it's practically on your doorstep, and there's lockable ski storage outside. Visit in the summer for a very different view, with lush green hills perfect for hiking.

Summit Lux

There’s more to Finland than great skiing, but this log-built home near Ruka, surrounded by forest and near the Masto ski slopes, makes for a pretty perfect vacation spot. Inside, this modern home is cosy and comfortable, with a fireplace in the living area and a big wooden table for meals with the family. Curl up with a cocoa after a day on the slopes, or in the warmer months enjoy a barbecue on the deck with a view of the forest. There is a dedicated workspace if you need to check in with the office, but otherwise, do as the locals do and relax in your personal sauna. Come summertime, hiking trails, bike parks and long arctic days where the sun waits up till midnight make this home the ideal getaway. The cabin is walking distance from public transport and the nearest ski lift, and if you venture a bit further, you'll find plenty of wilderness and National parks. To enjoy the Northern Lights, just look up!

Northern Exposure

This recently renovated log cabin is the ideal place to press pause on everyday life and immerse yourself in nature. Located in the Kuusamo region of Finland, it's part of a small collection of holiday homes and offers perfect peace where you can kick back and relax with your favourite people. 

There's plenty of rural charm inside, with reindeer skins on the walls, wooden beams and comfy furniture where you can get cosy on chilly evenings. Light up the fire and curl up on the sofa with a glass of wine, or serve up some family favourites at the long dining table. Outside you'll find a patio area if the weather is mild enough to dine alfresco, and you can round off your day as the Finns do with a relaxing session in the private sauna. 

It would be easy to spend your whole trip simply relaxing in these tranquil surroundings, but if you want to explore the area then there is plenty to do. Thrill-seekers can enjoy a day on the mountain at Ruka Ski Resort – it's just a three-minute drive away from your front door. In the warmer months, you can hike or cycle, through the rugged landscapes, and if you're good at fishing then you can even catch your dinner at one of the nearby lakes. 

Roaring Log Fire

This cosy apartment near Ruka is the best of both worlds. Surrounded by lush Finnish forests, at the foot of nearby ski trails, and facing the stunning Lake Talvijärvi, it's got outdoor activities for every day of the week – no matter the season. Wood and stone accents and a neutral colour palette give this home a rustic cabin-like feel that blends perfectly with the great outdoors. A comfortable base, with everything you could need, we love the private terrace and the traditional fireplace. After a day of adventures, soothe your muscles in the electric sauna before settling down for a movie night. If you'd prefer to get out and about, head into Ruka. One of the largest ski resorts in the country, it's got dozens of shops and restaurants to explore. In the winter it's all about skiing but visit in the summer for hiking, kayaking, fishing and much more.


Silver & Snow

Experience Finland at its very finest in this log cabin nestled away amongst the trees near Ruka and three kilometres from the nearby lake. Perfect for visiting in both summer and winter, this large split-level home is surrounded by stunning Finnish countryside. Look in any direction and you’re met with views of vast woodlands, while inside, the home provides a warm and cosy welcome to weary travellers. The double-height kitchen and dining space create a sense of occasion for family feasts, and the cleverly positioned log burner ensures that both the dining room and living area are kept nice and toasty in the winter. Convivial and light, the open-plan space opens onto the wrap-around terrace - perfect for letting the outdoors in and sitting out and admiring the scenery as dinner cooks on the barbecue. After a day on the slopes or an afternoon hike, rest and recharge in the sauna before settling in for a movie night in the lounge or the TV nook tucked up on the mezzanine level. And speaking of hikes, you’ll be just four kilometres away from the summer hiking trails of Valtavaara where you can really take in the breathtaking surrounding landscape. Winter visitors will also find plenty of cross-country skiing and snowmobiling trails nearby, and Ruka is home to the nearest ski resort with plenty of ski runs and a ski school, all just a short drive away.

The Cabin in the Woods

Start each day the right way with a mug of something hot and a belly full of delicious local delights before grabbing your skis and heading to the slopes, which can be reached in a short eight-minute drive from the cottage. When the day is drawing to a close and the chill in your toes has you calling for warmth, head on home and relax in your private sauna, or snuggle up on the sofa, toasting marshmallows by the fireplace. For guests with children, a little quiet time is just around the corner as the PlayStation 2 and its arsenal of games will keep the kids entertained.

Toasted Marshmallows

Leaving this cabin after your winter vacation is over, you’ll be eager for the cold weather to return so you can make your way back here. The slopes at Rukatunturi and Oulanka National Park’s trails are just a short trip away but you’re likely to spend most of your time at home chilling with family, relaxing in the sauna, soaking in the whirlpool bath and enjoying the ambience of staying in such a rustic, yet modern home. Make breakfast in the fully-equipped kitchen and tuck into your meal on the log table. When you feel like a camping experience, sit outside in the cooking tent, whip up your best dishes and turn dinnertime into a merry and memorable occasion. Thanks to the fireplace, the living area is always warm, so watching the next episode of your favourite series with appetisers and drinks is bound to be a daily occurrence.

Bear Cub

Make the most of the snow with endless days, skiing in Rukatunturi or snuggling up indoors at this classy home. The interior is stylish and refined thanks to the silver and grey tones; you also benefit from a fireplace and electric sauna so you’re never without warmth and comfort. Enjoy the views from the dining area over a family meal, or from the balcony as you savour the cool breeze. The ski area is a short walk away – you can reach it just by crossing the road. Get your skis out and have a blast with family and friends on the slopes and warm up once you’re back home with a hot chocolate by the fire and a relaxing session in the sauna.

Silver Slope

Perched on the banks of lake Yli-Suolijärvi in northern Finland, this recently-finished cabin is a wonderful place for a wintery escape. There are four pairs of snowshoes, as well as a bobsleigh, sledges and sliders available for guests to use to explore the immediate vicinity. Kirintövaara resort takes twenty minutes to reach in the car, as does Riisitunturi National Park. And then, once you've spent a few hours having fun in the snow, you can return to the home to warm up. This being Finland, there's a sauna in the house for you to take advantage of, but there's also underfloor heating and a hot tub outside, if you're feeling particularly brave. After a hearty dinner prepared in the minimalist kitchen, we can imagine no more satisfying end to the day than lounging about on the leather sofas and watching the snow fall through the window that takes up one side of the living room.

Saint Nicholas

Like something you’d find in a Nordic fairytale, this rustic log cabin on the outskirts of Ruka, Finland, is all about getting back to nature. Surrounded by trees, the home feels at one with its forest surroundings, made entirely of timber inside and out. Cabin comfort is the name of the game indoors, with antler art, reindeer ornaments and nature-inspired art evoking traditional Finnish charm. Snuggle up on the big, grey sofa with a mug of coffee while you warm yourself up by the log fire. After a day of snowshoeing along the nearby Pyhän Jyssäys trail or exploring the Oulanka National Park (thirty minutes away by car), come back home for rest and relaxation in your private sauna. Then, cook up a hearty meal in the sleek, modern kitchen or keep the cabin culture going strong with a barbecue in the great outdoors. With Ruka village just seven minutes away by car and Kuusamo’s centre under thirty minutes away, this home is remote while still being well connected. 

Cervidae

This uber-stylish modern home is set deep in the forest. Flanked on all sides by tall pine trees, the floor-to-ceiling double-height windows mean that these evergreens become very much a part of the house. From almost every room, the expanse of glass brings the outside in. You’ll feel like you’re in your own tree house here, albeit a decidedly luxurious one. Inside, the natural tones of slate, leather, stone and wood evoke a classically Scandinavian feel, and the high vaulted ceilings give a real sense of light and space. Whether winter or summer, the woods are a joy to explore, and the nearby lake is perfect for a summer swim. This home comes with the option of hiring a canoe for lake adventures, or skinned skis for wintery trails dusted with snow. Whatever the season, the sauna will be a welcome relief for tired muscles and a great way to unwind after a day out in the great outdoors. 

Forest Fold

Perched on the edge of Lake Livojärvi, you’ll find this cabin waiting to reveal the magic of Finland’s wild and beautiful landscape. 

Just a short drive south from the centre of Posio, the adventure begins from the moment of arrival. Surrounded by trees with idyllic views across the lake, this is the kind of space that feels instantly welcoming. From the traditional wood design to the simple styling, every detail celebrates the natural abundance of the environment. 

Stepping outside, you’ll find a little boat ready to take you across the lake. But if you feel like staying on dry land, the wood-burning sauna is the perfect spot to relax and unwind. 

From here, days can be spent hiking through the nearby Hirsiniemi region, wild swimming, sightseeing and visiting the resident reindeer at Valkean Peuran Valtakunta (just a short drive away).
