Spend idyllic days on the Grande Plage on your doorstep or indulge in some water sports such as surfing, paddleboarding or take some catamaran lessons. This lovely home is a real delight. It was recently renovated, and has been beautifully decorated – you can tell how much love has gone into this home. Hues of green and jade run throughout the decor, resulting in a soothing vibe. When you’re on holiday, you want to be able to relax in style, and that’s just what you can do here. 

The stunning monochrome kitchen is a great place to begin your day, whether you’re simply preparing coffee or whipping up a feast. Everything you might need has been considered here, so cooking is a pleasure rather than a chore. When everyone is seated around the dining table, you’ll see why this home is so popular with families and groups of friends – there’s plenty of room for everyone to gather together. 

If the sun is shining, you’ll want to be outside. Lie out on a sun lounger to top up your Vitamin D, or dive right into the heated swimming pool. The south-facing terrace is a wonderful spot, looking out over the lush gardens – we’d be tempted to fire up the barbecue for a dinner under the stars. You’re close to the coast so the seafood is great – the scallops from the Bay of Saint-Brieuc in particular are divine.

A stone's throw from the sandy beaches of Cancale, in the picture-pretty bay of Port Mer, this charming home offers the very best of coastal living. Boasting a gorgeous garden with plenty of cosy spots to sit down and breathe in the salty sea air, start your days with coffee on the lawn while watching the boats sail by. 

If you want to see the ocean up close, the beach is less than 1km away – take a walk down to the golden sands to discover what the famous Emerald Coast has to offer. When you're feeling peckish, Cancale oysters are a must-try. Head to one of the local restaurants or buy some from the Mont Saint-Michel oyster market and take them home to prepare yourself. We highly recommend an alfresco dinner on the terrace, washed down with a glass of French wine. When you're finished, head up to the terrace to watch the sunset – the waterfront views have to be seen to be believed. 

When darkness falls, head inside to cuddle up on the sumptuous sofa to watch a movie. If you're travelling with little ones, the mezzanine level dens are the perfect place for a bedtime story to make sure they settle in for a good night's sleep.

We can easily see why Layers Upon Layers was chosen as one of the best homes for breaks in France in 2016 — it's typical French countryside home with oodles of charm and plenty of amenities that will help you make lifelong memories. The interior has been furnished with gorgeous furniture that give it a rather retro-rustic atmosphere, and the host is keen on restoring period features, so that you can immerse yourself into the spirit of rural France. Meneac is far from a ghost town even outside of the tourist season, making it a great destination year-round, but there are plenty of interesting villages and castles to explore in the area. When you've had your fill of sights for the day, return to your holiday residence and try out a new recipe, or get the charcoal barbecue going in the garden. After a nice meal, treat yourself to some local wine and organise a movie night with the help of the big flat-screen TV that's equipped with Freeview.

Built in 1906, you'll be just metres away from the sandy shores of le Grande Plage. With direct beach access via the stairs in front of the villa, from here, you're encouraged to meditate, do yoga, or relax while taking in the stunning blue views with a cup of tea in hand. Inside the beach villa, classic and nautical designs present a home bursting with character. We love the antique furniture pieces which add traditional French charm with bags of elegance. 

Thanks to its on-point location, you can enjoy scenic beach walks, rollerblading or cycling on the seawall. There's also a surf school just 200 metres away, and if actively participating in watersports isn't your thing, the beach's kitesurfers, windsurfers or surfers will guarantee an excellent show. Meanwhile, a mini-market and the many nearby restaurants offer an endless opportunity to sample the local Brittany delicacies and fresh seafood in Saint-Malo. 



Staring out to Sea 

We fell hard for this characterful home not far from the St Lunaire coastline and we're pretty sure other guests will be just as smitten. A lot of that is down to the design. Much of it is contemporary in scope, from the minimalist kitchen and stark white walls to the bare wooden floors and the chic selection of furnishings. However, there are a few features that hark back to the past, like the large cabinets filled with curios and the vintage wall signs.

One of our favourite parts of the home, however, is just how bright it feels – that's what'll happen if you fill the walls with large windows, skylights and floor-to-ceiling glass doors. If you want to feel the sun directly on your skin, you only have to step outside onto one of the pair of terraces, which have both loungers and an alfresco dining table for making the most of sunny weather.

If you're lucky with the forecast, you'll probably want to make the most of the fact that St Lunaire's main beach is less than a kilometre away and there are a few more along this stretch of Breton coastline to explore. The centre of town is just as close when you want restaurants and shops, but there's a greater variety in the Dinard, only a short drive away.

An ideal base for exploring Britanny and the likes of Mont St Michel, Port Mer Beach (900 metres away) and the beach of Le Verger La Pointe du Grouin – found a fifteen-minute walk away.

Situated on the commune of Pleneuf-Val-Andre less than 1km from the beach lies this cosy home. Perfect for families, you'll have a large garden to let the kids play in alongside your furry friends, and a raised terrace with seating outdoors to comfortably enjoy the fresh air and blue skies. In the day, large windows and doors to the terrace let the sunlight bathe the open-plan living space, and you'll have the option of whipping up something in the kitchen, throwing a barbecue in the sunshine or heading out to one of many choices for fantastic nearby restaurants. In the evening, sit under the stars with a drink or gather in the living room with a movie on the big screen and let the wood stove heat you up – a perfect cosy evening.

You'll be close to the port of Dahouet, and will be able to benefit from close proximity to shops and pick up any necessities you might need. You won't have to compromise the practicality of your stay just because you want to stay away from the busiest areas and tourist traps! It's only a stroll down to the nearest beach where you can appreciate the sand, sun and sea of the coastline. If that sounds a little too sedate, there's a huge range of games, from foosball and ping-pong to a petanque court and an arcade machine on which you'll find over 1500 video games. We're not saying you'll be praying for rainy days, but they won't be the catastrophe they might be at other addresses.

At the same time, the huge garden offers lots of space and equipment for enjoying spells of sunny weather. You can embrace a French tradition on the petanque court, bounce about on the trampoline or do nothing more strenuous than read on the terrace – perhaps with dinner cooking away on the barbecue in the background.

Head up to the first floor of this home close to the Brittany coastline and you're treated to views of the sea and the narrow Sillon de Talbert stretching out through the water. Back down at ground level, it's not possible to catch a glimpse of this vista, but there's an innate sense of peace and tranquillity that often comes with being close to the sea.

During spells of warm weather, guests can while away the hours on the loungers and dining table on the terrace, or even play games on the large lawn. When you finally head inside, you're sure to be instantly struck by the minimalist interior. Given that your eyes are naturally drawn to what lies outside, it makes sense that the design doesn't try to compete. However, there's a sleek subtlety to the stark white walls, deliciously sleek kitchen and geometric furnishings – the square dining table next to the double-aspect windows is a particularly picturesque spot for dinner.

When it comes to seeing a little more of Saint-Malo, there's way more than the neighbouring beach to keep you occupied. Fort National can be visited if you time the tides right, while the winding alleys and streets of the historic Intra-Muros area are less than ten minutes away on foot as well.
