This charming apartment in Marseille’s Castellane neighbourhood puts you in a prime spot to explore the city’s historic sights and cultural gems. We love how the soft coastal blues, traditional tiles and modern furnishings come together to create a feeling of tranquillity. Settle in at the breakfast table for coffee and croissants from your local boulangerie, then fire off a few emails before heading out to discover the city’s la Bonne Mère – the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde – crowned with a golden statue of the Virgin Mary. At home, pop open a bottle of locally-produced Bandol and prepare a seafood dinner with the selection you picked up from the Old Port – that is, when you're not out sampling the regional cuisine in one of Cours Julien’s authentic bistrots.

When you stay at this apartment in La Ciotat, you’ll be just steps away from the Sunday market. It’s also under a five-minute stroll to the Old Port and fifteen minutes from La Ciotat’s beaches. The home itself has been renovated by an architect and includes a large living-dining room with a sofa bed, which guests five and six will be sleeping on. One thing to note is that there's air conditioning in the living space and the main bedroom only. There is also a children's bedroom with a bunk bed off the main bedroom, so this place is ideal for families.

The Sunday Market

This magnificent Marseille home must be seen to be believed. Completely renovated, redesigned and refurbished by a talented interior designer, this former dance hall on the Place aux Huiles boasts a large open plan kitchen cum dining and living room and a mezzanine level sleeping space. Featuring exposed stone walls, wooden floors, beautifully beamed ceilings and array of intriguing hanging lights, this amazing apartment achieves the perfect blend of old and new.

Blessed, too, with unbeatable views of the Old Port from twin sets of French doors in the living room, you’ll love people watching here. Sip on your morning coffee while cocooned in bed, coax the kids into a cook-along or chill out with a glass of wine on the endlessly lounge worthy L-shaped sofa. Whatever you do bring the bonhomie. 

If you fancy getting out and about, why not start with a visit to the musée du vieux Marseille and its rooftop café, before stopping to sample some sensational seafood at one of many portside eateries. Alternatively take a twenty-minute ferry ride from the Old Port to the previously uninhabited island of Château d’If made famous by Alexandre Dumas’ The Count of Montecristo.

It's here we imagine you’ll start your day sipping coffee as the sun rises and end your day by clinking glasses of Bandol as the sun falls.

When you’re ready to explore, the beautiful Frioul Islands can be reached by ferry, while one of France’s most remarkable gardens, Parc Borély, is a perfect place to while away an afternoon. 

Two Points of View

This is an ideal apartment for friends and families looking to pound the pavement and explore all that Marseille has to offer. If you're hoping to squeeze in all the sights, it makes a great base: well connected by Marseille's transport network and just twenty-five minutes on foot from Old Town. In summer, take in the city views from the shared rooftop, or cool off in the communal pool. While six guests may be a bit snug (with two occupying the sofa bed in the living room at full capacity), it's a practical place for a city break with lots to love about it.

Set against stunning backdrops, this home is ideal for a quiet retreat with family or friends. Wake to views across the valley and Mont Sainte-Victoire, and spend your days enjoying the various outdoor areas or dining alfresco. The home is elegant with rustic touches, and the indoor wood-burning fireplace only adds to its charm. Just a ten-minute drive from Aix-en-Provence's old city centre, yet set in among forest trails in a protected natural park, you truly get the best of both worlds at this home in the heart of Provence.

This home is wonderfully located in the centre of Marseille on a shopping street which allows you to discover everything the city has to offer by foot. After a morning of exploring the world-class museums and galleries, head to one of the local markets to pick up some ingredients for dinner. This area of Southern France is famous for Bouillabaisse, a delicious garlic and saffron flavoured fish stew. You can also pick up a bottle of Pastis, an aniseed based alcoholic beverage which has been enjoyed by locals for years.

The kitchen has everything you need for cooking at home, and there's plenty of space to relax after a day of exploring. The neighbourhood can get a little lively during the day, but we think the central location is worth it.
