It’s in the heart of the Perigord countryside, with plenty to discover along the Dordogne. A day trip to the famous medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda is a must, with its gorgeous architecture and incredible food markets. Rent bikes from your host and explore the rich and verdant countryside surrounding the villa, taking picnics of local cheese and fresh bread to enjoy along the way. 

Of course, you may find that you’re entirely content to stay put most of the time – there’s enough to enjoy at the villa, after all. Wake up early and enjoy a quiet moment in the garden, sipping your coffee as the early-morning sun warms you. After a breakfast of fresh fruit and pastries, lie in the sun beside the pool, occasionally dipping a toe in to test the temperature. Sip cafe au lait before hopping in the plunge pool on summer days. To forget all about your medieval surroundings, rustle up a barbecue dinner and take photos beneath the wisteria. Alternatively, why not hire a private chef to cook a feast fit for a king? In the atmospheric dining room, you'll saunter atop chestnut floors and break bread with your loved ones beside a grand fireplace.

Perched above a vegetable farm, you can stock the kitchen with fresh produce at the weekly village market. Furthermore, this superb home sits within driving distance of several landmarks, including the Château de Beynac – an old stronghold of Richard the Lionheart. From canoeing along the Dordogne river to picnicking in the nearby forest, there's plenty to do in the countryside.

A honey-coloured stone house in a dreamy riverside location in the Dordogne… Do French getaways get any better than this?

This beautiful house has been a family home for four generations, and you can feel the love that’s been poured into it. The decor is simple and bright so as not to take away attention from the traditional features like exposed stone walls. Wide windows look out onto the river, which is flanked by lush greenery and flowers. 

Wake to the bells of the small church opposite, and take breakfast on the terrace. There’s a romantic feel to this part of the world, particularly in the early morning when the haze still clings to the river. Sip your coffee and breathe in the tranquillity of the region. 

The house is only a six-minute drive from Limeuil, where the Vézère meets the Dordogne. The Panoramic Gardens have the most stunning views – after you’ve drunk in the vista, head to a bistro or cafe nearby. You might also like to paddle along the river, pulling into river beaches to soak up the sunshine – we like to set off from Le Buisson, which is eight minutes away by car. You’re in a great location for day trips of all kinds, whether you want to meander along the narrow medieval streets of Sarlat – forty-three minutes away – or sip local wine at Château de Monbazillac, which takes forty-four minutes in the car. 

Make sure to call in at the local food markets to sample the best produce in the area. After a day out seeing the sights, why not settle in for a family barbecue on the terrace? Splash around in the pool while the barbecue is heating up, and spend your evening under the stars.

If you're after an authentic stay in a historic French castle, look no further –this home offers the ultimate luxury French chateau experience. With carved, painted and stencilled wooden ceilings, uniquely themed bedrooms and even an original medieval chandelier in the period dining room, the building feels rich in history and exquisite in taste. Where do you even begin at an estate like this? Set in the rolling Dordogne countryside, just a few minutes by car from Saint-Julien-de-Lampon and the superb Dordogne River, it's a staggering prospect with two large homes, two swimming pools and two annexes. Sleeping up to twenty-two guests and with a picture-perfect chapel available for events, it's a once-in-a-lifetime setting for a very special celebration or a gathering of friends and family.

Around twenty-five minutes from the medieval city of Sarlat, this ancient hamlet has been lovingly maintained, creating both a comfortable, lived-in feel and an air of grandeur. With numerous seating areas, dining tables and indoor and outdoor entertaining spaces, your group can live the high life all together. 

One of our favourite spots has to be the living room in the four-bedroom home, with its exposed stone walls, beamed ceiling and huge fireplace – as well as panoramic views across the green valley. Plenty of character can be found upstairs, too, with dramatic vaulted ceilings and pretty bedrooms. Meanwhile, the larger of the two main homes has been converted more recently and has a more modern feel – and sits within a private walled garden.

It's perfectly possible to choose just one of the main homes if you're travelling as a smaller group, and there's an almost endless list of luxury add-ons if you're keen to take the work out of your stay – from private chefs and waitress service to daily breakfast and cleaning. And don't miss the chance to arrange boat hire on the nearby river for a day out to really remember.

The minute you arrive at Bucolic Beauty, you’ll feel right at home thanks to its beautiful and personal touches. During cooler months, the cosy sitting room is great for hunkering by the fire, while the outdoor terraced dining area and swimming pool make alfresco living a breeze during summer days. Little ones will particularly enjoy the large games barn that comes complete with table tennis and plenty of space to roam around. This chateau was in the same family from the 17th century to 1980 and then acquired by the current host in the last 12 months. A stay here will quickly reveal why they are probably so reluctant to let it slip out of their grasp.

The perks start before you even reach the home itself. Fifteen acres of well-kempt grounds feature everything from a wildflower meadow and orchards to a private lake surrounded by woodland paths. A little closer to the property, there's a swimming pool to cool off during the summer months, an outdoor kitchen with a firepit, plus alfresco tables on the terrace with scenic views of the local valley.

Behind the home's front door, guests are treated to three floors of lavish living space with a wealth of antique furnishings, grand chandeliers and cosy fireplaces. However, despite this historic appearance, a recent renovation has brought the chateau up to 21st-century standards, including an updated kitchen. There are also a lot of games and activities to keep youngsters entertained, from the slate-based pool table to a cinema room.

Travelling in a larger group? The grange is available upon request for a fee and can accommodate an additional four guests, bringing the total occupancy up to eighteen.

While there's certainly a sense of seclusion at the address, the market town of Thivers is only one kilometre away when you need shops or restaurants. Throughout the surrounding area, it's possible to fill days with visits to castles, wine tastings or outdoor activities.

With the option to dine under a magnificent chandelier with food prepared by your very own private chef in the gastronomical centre of France, this home is a real life fairy-tale. And with stunning grounds to explore and panoramic views of the French countryside, it’s certainly not short of space to relax and unwind. If you’re looking for that je-ne-sais-quoi, Le Roi has it all.

If a slice of the scenic Dordogne countryside were to express itself as a home, this would be it. Be it the pool surrounded by wildflowers and trees, the decadent sauna and hot-tub or evening Tête-à-têtes by the fireside as you sink into plush sofas, every space erases any trace of stress in you. While it's tempting to stay back in this very secure home playing table tennis all day, it'd be a shame to miss the relaxing activities nearby. Vitrac is a perfect town for cycling, horse-riding, golf and idling by riverside beaches. And if it's fishing that tugs at the heartstrings, the home-owner is a fisherman himself and will love to guide you through. With medieval towns, archaeological parks, markets and culinary delights all around, it goes a long way to live in this gorgeous home.

Situated on its very own 1km stretch of the Dordogne river is this home with warm stone interiors and impressive outdoor living areas lined by wisteria trees. Perfect for the family or multiple couples looking to relax and enjoy the surrounding regions, mornings by the pool will turn to afternoons on the riverfront reached by wandering through walnut groves. For those feeling sporty, there is a private tennis court on the property. If you do want to leave home, take the kids horseback riding or escape for some romance to a vineyard and stop in the local village on the way home. Pitch up some local truffle to enjoy with your bottle of Bergerac on the dining terrace. Don’t forget to add your very own home-grown walnuts to the spread. 

Happy River

A delightfully restored rectory in the Dordogne valley, this charming home provides peace and quiet for a family or group of friends wanting to slow down and switch off. Surrounded by manicured lawns that are perfect for picnics, you’ll spend mornings on the wraparound terrace listening to the birds sing in the fresh countryside air. When the temperature starts to rise, cool off with a dip in the inviting pool before heading inside to put together a tasty lunch for your loved ones. 

We loved the rustic interiors; exposed stone walls, terracotta-tiled floors and timber beams infuse an organic warmth throughout. Steal a moment for yourself in the cosy living space before retreating to the main bedroom for an afternoon snooze beneath double-height ceilings. If exploring is on the agenda, jump in the car and visit the nearby towns and villages – we were particularly fond of Gourdon, a twenty-minute drive away, as well as the craggy limestone plateaus of Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park, reached in no more than thirty minutes.

Le Presbytère

The organic beauty of the Périgord region features unspoiled lands full of flora, fauna, and elegant chateaus. And its most well-known, the 13th-century Château de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, is only a six-minute drive from this hilltop retreat. But don’t forget your easel and palette, as you’ll quickly understand why this artist’s family home is the ultimate spot for inspiration.

Two words – mesmerising views. While the lifestyle on the ground involves truffles and Bergerac wine as much as hiking boots and canoes, this home elevates you to another level. On the platformed terrace with stilts built into the slope, pop champagne to say cheers to the start of the holiday. Leave the bottle in the pool house fridge and stroll along the gardens, where you’ll pass incredible valley vistas by your heated pool. The kids can run wild in the play area while you head in to admire the interiors.

Two more words – rural opulence. There’s an old-world, country feel with chunky timber beams, antique furniture, and an array of regal patterns and colours. From the sumptuous curtains to the soft rugs, we love the warmth created by this rich colour scheme, with extra heat coming from the fireplace. Is it time to open the red yet?


The Easel

In the heart of the Limousin-Perigord National Park, this home exudes all the rustic charm of an old farmhouse. The building dates back to the 17th century, evident in its honey-brown stone facade and white-wash shutters. The lush garden is home to towering, ancient trees, offering plenty of privacy, especially if you want to spend day lounging by the poolside in the sun. There’s a hammock for a quiet siesta and dining beneath the wrought-iron gazebo. From here, the only soundtrack to your holiday is the cheep of blue and great tits. Pathways lead across the seven acres of grounds to hidden benches and shaded spots between the trees – you may even spot the resident green woodpecker nesting in the sweet chestnut tree. 

Inside, it’s a picture of lavish yet rustic charm, with a wood-burning stove in the master bedroom for chilly evenings, original fireplaces and a big farmhouse-style table at the centre of the kitchen. This home has been lovingly restored, with the old features like wood beams and terracotta floors still on display. In the grand living room, you’ll find an antique dresser stacked with books and a fireplace for cosy evenings in. While the kitchen is vast and boasts a pretty stove in the old hearth. 

You could spend all your days spotting wildlife and lounging by the pool. But if you do fancy a day trip, Limoges is a forty-five-minute drive and the pretty medieval town of Périgueux is a fifty-minute drive in the other direction.

The Dordogne is a truly unique region. There aren’t many places where lush greenery, rolling rivers, and thick forests have prehistoric cave paintings hidden away in their landscapes. A fifty-minute drive from the ancient art of Lascaux, this stone-built villa might not be as old, but certainly offers old-world character.

Set in a garden full of native foliage and flowers, you can’t help but be drawn to its exteriors as soon as you arrive. At the centre, you’ll find a private, heated pool with sun loungers lining its terrace – the perfect spot for an afternoon glass of local Bergerac wine. Heat up the built-in barbecue while you head off to explore the interiors.

Rural charm is the first item on the agenda. Chunky timber beams, vintage-style armchairs, and a glorious wood-burning fireplace in a stone inglenook – could it get any more rustic? The country kitchen is ideal for when your private chef pays a visit, especially as you’ve got two separate formal dining areas, plus an alfresco terrace. And luxe continues upstairs, where the main bedroom boasts its own jacuzzi in the corner (maybe you should let someone else keep an eye on the barbecue).

Situated in the Lot department, just south of the Dordogne River, this cosy 18th-century home is a wonderful place from which to explore the enchanting Occitanie region. 

Inside, original timber beams and stone walls have been lovingly restored to create a warm and inviting ambience. We loved the convivial living space with its squashy sofa and fully-equipped kitchen – ideal for those who like to flex their culinary muscles. When you’re not playing board games at the dining table, you’ll be out on the terrace, sipping a café au lait and watching the day pass by. 

Spend afternoons playing badminton before cooling off with a swim in the private pool. Later on, take the bicycles out for a spin through the surrounding countryside or why not jump in the car and explore the quaint medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda – it’s only a thirty-minute drive away. 

Clementine Cottage

Surrounded by greenery for as far as the eye can see, this traditional hideaway in Limousin offers space and peaceful seclusion like no other. If ever there was a lesson in effortless French country living, this is it. From the cobalt blue shutters that adorn the home’s exterior to the warm, rustic interiors, there are individual touches adding unique style everywhere. We particularly love the textiles and character found in the bedrooms – the antique beds are just perfect. But the true beauty of this property is only really apparent when you pad across the cool floors and out on the south-facing terrace. The charming pool and lawn area are built for relaxation. Enjoy long lunches under the grapevine on the veranda, before taking a refreshing dip. Should you ever be persuaded, you’ll find plenty of options for a spot of day-tripping just a short car journey away. There are lakes aplenty nearby and quintessential French towns galore.

Les Volets Bleus

Sat amongst rolling green hills, this home-away-from-home is a little slice of French paradise. Arriving here, you’ll be surprised to learn this beautiful, modern home was once a farmhouse. Gone are all traces – in their place, your eyes will be drawn to the vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and a stunning spiral staircase that invites you to the mezzanine to explore. This is an open home just made for socialising, making it the perfect retreat for a large family gathering or a group of friends. Of an evening, rustle up a delicious dinner and as the smell of food drifts through the home, your loved ones can be close by, seated around the expansive table enjoying a glass or two of something fruity. If the weather’s warm enough, you may prefer to dine alfresco – fire up the barbecue and take in the magnificent green views that stretch out before you. 

As the day draws to a close, step outside with your uncorked bottle of wine and take in the night sky. Without light pollution, look up and you’ll see a blanket of beautiful stars overhead, ready to wrap you up in their glow. The quiet stillness of the evening is sure to send you off into a blissful night’s sleep when it’s time for bed.
