Nestled on the edge of the Causses National Park, this family-friendly villa in the Midi-Pyrenees offers a great base for families looking to explore nearby Dordogne, Cele and Lot river valleys. Active seekers will love going hiking, caving, horseback riding and paddling. You can tell a lot of thought has gone into making this home kid friendly - the billiards room, toys and games are bound to keep little ones entertained for hours on end. But there’s plenty to keep adults happy, too. We’re particular fans of the charming wine cellar and the two rustic dining rooms that combine to make entertaining in this home a pleasure. 

Maison Cohors

This chateau was in the same family from the 17th century to 1980 and then acquired by the current host in the last 12 months. A stay here will quickly reveal why they are probably so reluctant to let it slip out of their grasp.

The perks start before you even reach the home itself. Fifteen acres of well-kempt grounds feature everything from a wildflower meadow and orchards to a private lake surrounded by woodland paths. A little closer to the property, there's a swimming pool to cool off during the summer months, an outdoor kitchen with a firepit, plus alfresco tables on the terrace with scenic views of the local valley.

Behind the home's front door, guests are treated to three floors of lavish living space with a wealth of antique furnishings, grand chandeliers and cosy fireplaces. However, despite this historic appearance, a recent renovation has brought the chateau up to 21st-century standards, including an updated kitchen. There are also a lot of games and activities to keep youngsters entertained, from the slate-based pool table to a cinema room.

Travelling in a larger group? The grange is available upon request for a fee and can accommodate an additional four guests, bringing the total occupancy up to eighteen.

While there's certainly a sense of seclusion at the address, the market town of Thivers is only one kilometre away when you need shops or restaurants. Throughout the surrounding area, it's possible to fill days with visits to castles, wine tastings or outdoor activities. 

It Runs in the Family

Sat amongst rolling green hills, this home-away-from-home is a little slice of French paradise. Arriving here, you’ll be surprised to learn this beautiful, modern home was once a farmhouse. Gone are all traces – in their place, your eyes will be drawn to the vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and a stunning spiral staircase that invites you to the mezzanine to explore. This is an open home just made for socialising, making it the perfect retreat for a large family gathering or a group of friends. Of an evening, rustle up a delicious dinner and as the smell of food drifts through the home, your loved ones can be close by, seated around the expansive table enjoying a glass or two of something fruity. If the weather’s warm enough, you may prefer to dine alfresco – fire up the barbecue and take in the magnificent green views that stretch out before you. 

As the day draws to a close, step outside with your uncorked bottle of wine and take in the night sky. Without light pollution, look up and you’ll see a blanket of beautiful stars overhead, ready to wrap you up in their glow. The quiet stillness of the evening is sure to send you off into a blissful night’s sleep when it’s time for bed. 

Once Upon a Farm

In the heart of the Limousin-Perigord National Park, this home exudes all the rustic charm of an old farmhouse. The building dates back to the 17th century, evident in its honey-brown stone facade and white-wash shutters. The lush garden is home to towering, ancient trees, offering plenty of privacy, especially if you want to spend day lounging by the poolside in the sun. There’s a hammock for a quiet siesta and dining beneath the wrought-iron gazebo. From here, the only soundtrack to your holiday is the cheep of blue and great tits. Pathways lead across the seven acres of grounds to hidden benches and shaded spots between the trees – you may even spot the resident green woodpecker nesting in the sweet chestnut tree. 

Inside, it’s a picture of lavish yet rustic charm, with a wood-burning stove in the master bedroom for chilly evenings, original fireplaces and a big farmhouse-style table at the centre of the kitchen. This home has been lovingly restored, with the old features like wood beams and terracotta floors still on display. In the grand living room, you’ll find an antique dresser stacked with books and a fireplace for cosy evenings in. While the kitchen is vast and boasts a pretty stove in the old hearth. 

You could spend all your days spotting wildlife and lounging by the pool. But if you do fancy a day trip, Limoges is a forty-five-minute drive and the pretty medieval town of Périgueux is a fifty-minute drive in the other direction. 

Woodpeckers in the Trees

Built in 1611, this elegant chateau is where historic grandeur meets contemporary luxury. Arriving to Le Roi through the classical iron gates, you’ll feel like royalty. With the option to dine under a magnificent chandelier with food prepared by your very own private chef in the gastronomical centre of France, this home is a real life fairy-tale. And with stunning grounds to explore and panoramic views of the French countryside, it’s certainly not short of space to relax and unwind. If you’re looking for that je-ne-sais-quoi, Le Roi has it all.

Le Roi

A honey-coloured stone house in a dreamy riverside location in the Dordogne… Do French getaways get any better than this?

This beautiful house has been a family home for four generations, and you can feel the love that’s been poured into it. The decor is simple and bright so as not to take away attention from the traditional features like exposed stone walls. Wide windows look out onto the river, which is flanked by lush greenery and flowers. 

Wake to the bells of the small church opposite, and take breakfast on the terrace. There’s a romantic feel to this part of the world, particularly in the early morning when the haze still clings to the river. Sip your coffee and breathe in the tranquillity of the region. 

The house is only a six-minute drive from Limeuil, where the Vézère meets the Dordogne. The Panoramic Gardens have the most stunning views – after you’ve drunk in the vista, head to a bistro or cafe nearby. You might also like to paddle along the river, pulling into river beaches to soak up the sunshine – we like to set off from Le Buisson, which is eight minutes away by car. You’re in a great location for day trips of all kinds, whether you want to meander along the narrow medieval streets of Sarlat – forty-three minutes away – or sip local wine at Château de Monbazillac, which takes forty-four minutes in the car. 

Make sure to call in at the local food markets to sample the best produce in the area. After a day out seeing the sights, why not settle in for a family barbecue on the terrace? Splash around in the pool while the barbecue is heating up, and spend your evening under the stars. 


River View Cottage

The organic beauty of the Périgord region features unspoiled lands full of flora, fauna, and elegant chateaus. And its most well-known, the 13th-century Château de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, is only a six-minute drive from this hilltop retreat. But don’t forget your easel and palette, as you’ll quickly understand why this artist’s family home is the ultimate spot for inspiration.

Two words – mesmerising views. While the lifestyle on the ground involves truffles and Bergerac wine as much as hiking boots and canoes, this home elevates you to another level. On the platformed terrace with stilts built into the slope, pop champagne to say cheers to the start of the holiday. Leave the bottle in the pool house fridge and stroll along the gardens, where you’ll pass incredible valley vistas by your heated pool. The kids can run wild in the play area while you head in to admire the interiors.

Two more words – rural opulence. There’s an old-world, country feel with chunky timber beams, antique furniture, and an array of regal patterns and colours. From the sumptuous curtains to the soft rugs, we love the warmth created by this rich colour scheme, with extra heat coming from the fireplace. Is it time to open the red yet?
