While the Mediterranean beaches in the south of France are constantly lauded, the ruggedly beautiful seaside spots at the top end of the country are underrated by comparison. If you want to see a splendid example of one such resort, this home in Sables-d'Or-les-Pins will convert almost anybody.

There's almost something quite rustic about the address, whether it's the large tree-filed garden surrounding the house or the pretty stone facade. Behind the front door, it's a little more contemporary than you might imagine, with the sort of stark white walls, smart wooden floors and sleek kitchen surfaces that wouldn't look out of place in a stylish city apartment. Saying that, the living room's large window and feature fireplace add a level of cosiness, although sadly the latter is only decorative.

Such is the humble size of the local town, the bulk of the attractions and conveniences are only a short walk away. The main beach is 1km, for instance, while there are tennis and golf facilities all of two minutes away on foot. In the centre of town, there's a small selection of restaurants and bars to tide you over during your visit.

This is one of those homes that will have you completely smitten before you've even stepped foot behind the front door. Sitting within huge grounds just off the coastline in Sables D'or les Pins, there are gorgeous sea views to be had from the garden and no shortage of spots from which to appreciate this peaceful coastal setting, including a large terrace with a barbecue and dining table ready and waiting for feasts that stretch long into the evening.

The scenery is no less pretty out through the large windows inside and one of the first-floor bedrooms is treated to a balcony as well so you can get a blast of sea air the very moment you wake up. However, don't forget to lavish a little attention on the carefully put-together interior, which is both contemporary and quirky. Cleansingly white walls and ceilings play host to an eclectic collection of artwork and lighting fixtures, while the bright red bathtub is certainly eye-catching, too.

As you would hope given the proximity of La Manche, the home enjoys direct access to the beach, which feels almost like an extension of the garden. In the other direction, there are shops, restaurants and markets just over five minutes' walk from the home, as well as other attractions a short drive away – Les Jardins de Ker Louis can be reached in a quarter of an hour, for instance.

Frequent some of the many local ice cream parlors, restaurants, or bars located just a stone's throw from the apartment for a taste of authentic Breton cuisine. Mosy to the nearest beach, just 5-minutes walk away. Or, for something a little more active, why not sign up for the well-regarded sailing school, surf classes, or hire a jet ski for an afternoon of wave-riding? Those with a penchant for golf are in luck too, with the 18-hole course at Pléneuf Val just 10-minutes away by car.

Located in a former hotel, this apartment has breathtaking sea views. We particularly love the main bedroom with its four-poster bed and ocean vistas (there's also an office area here if you want to write a travel blog or catch up on work). In fact, there are sea views to enjoy from most rooms. The highlight, though, for us, is the private garden area around the apartment – you have a terrace and garden furniture for alfresco meals – it's a great space overlooking the Grande Plage, as well as the Pointe de la Garde.

Spend idyllic days on the Grande Plage on your doorstep or indulge in some water sports such as surfing, paddleboarding or take some catamaran lessons. If you fancy exploring further afield, then Cape Fréhel, to the west, is perfect for bird watchers, or the nearby charming resort of Saint-Cast-le-Guildo has a small port and coastal paths.

This lovely home is a real delight. It was recently renovated, and has been beautifully decorated – you can tell how much love has gone into this home. Hues of green and jade run throughout the decor, resulting in a soothing vibe. When you’re on holiday, you want to be able to relax in style, and that’s just what you can do here. 

The stunning monochrome kitchen is a great place to begin your day, whether you’re simply preparing coffee or whipping up a feast. Everything you might need has been considered here, so cooking is a pleasure rather than a chore. When everyone is seated around the dining table, you’ll see why this home is so popular with families and groups of friends – there’s plenty of room for everyone to gather together. 

If the sun is shining, you’ll want to be outside. Lie out on a sun lounger to top up your Vitamin D, or dive right into the heated swimming pool. The south-facing terrace is a wonderful spot, looking out over the lush gardens – we’d be tempted to fire up the barbecue for a dinner under the stars. You’re close to the coast so the seafood is great – the scallops from the Bay of Saint-Brieuc in particular are divine.

We fell hard for this characterful home not far from the St Lunaire coastline and we're pretty sure other guests will be just as smitten. A lot of that is down to the design. Much of it is contemporary in scope, from the minimalist kitchen and stark white walls to the bare wooden floors and the chic selection of furnishings. However, there are a few features that hark back to the past, like the large cabinets filled with curios and the vintage wall signs.

One of our favourite parts of the home, however, is just how bright it feels – that's what'll happen if you fill the walls with large windows, skylights and floor-to-ceiling glass doors. If you want to feel the sun directly on your skin, you only have to step outside onto one of the pair of terraces, which have both loungers and an alfresco dining table for making the most of sunny weather.

If you're lucky with the forecast, you'll probably want to make the most of the fact that St Lunaire's main beach is less than a kilometre away and there are a few more along this stretch of Breton coastline to explore. The centre of town is just as close when you want restaurants and shops, but there's a greater variety in the Dinard, only a short drive away.

This delightful home is a countryside dream. Quaint in style, this home is part of a magnificent 400-year-old building, beautifully renovated and modernised. Exuding calm, you will feel the ambience before you even enter. Soft cream stone and white shutters set the scene for the beauty that resides indoors. The open-plan kitchen and living space is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a romantic evening cooking dinner. The moss green chaise centrepiece is where you may kick your slippers off and pop your feet up for an evening in front of the open fireplace. Thanks to its on-point location, you can enjoy scenic beach walks, rollerblading or cycling on the seawall. There's also a surf school just 200 metres away, and if actively participating in watersports isn't your thing, the beach's kitesurfers, windsurfers or surfers will guarantee an excellent show. Meanwhile, a mini-market and the many nearby restaurants offer an endless opportunity to sample the local Brittany delicacies and fresh seafood in Saint-Malo.

If you want to see the ocean up close, the beach is less than 1km away – take a walk down to the golden sands to discover what the famous Emerald Coast has to offer. When you're feeling peckish, Cancale oysters are a must-try. Head to one of the local restaurants or buy some from the Mont Saint-Michel oyster market and take them home to prepare yourself. We highly recommend an alfresco dinner on the terrace, washed down with a glass of French wine. When you're finished, head up to the terrace to watch the sunset – the waterfront views have to be seen to be believed. 

When darkness falls, head inside to cuddle up on the sumptuous sofa to watch a movie. If you're travelling with little ones, the mezzanine level dens are the perfect place for a bedtime story to make sure they settle in for a good night's sleep. 

Emerald Coast of Cancale

We can easily see why Layers Upon Layers was chosen as one of the best homes for breaks in France in 2016 — it's typical French countryside home with oodles of charm and plenty of amenities that will help you make lifelong memories. Meneac is far from a ghost town even outside of the tourist season, making it a great destination year-round, but there are plenty of interesting villages and castles to explore in the area. Layers Upon Layers

Sitting close to the point at which La Rance meets La Manche, this home puts guests in an excellent location for exploring the famed beach resort of Dinard.

However, it's fair to say that there's a lot more riding in this address's favour that the spot it occupies on the map. For a start, it's actually made up of two properties that have been joined up and consequently, there's a huge amount of space behind the front door – something only emphasised by the open layout and wealth of natural light from the large windows.
