Only around 200m away from the bay, this home near the popular Arcachon Basin exudes calm from the moment you lay your eyes on it. Tucked away between trees, and with an ocean view from the backyard, it seems to encourage you to switch off, forget about time, and simply exist on your own terms. 

Inside, the combination of modern furnishings, eclectic decorative pieces, and some of the original features – the flooring and archways remain untouched – makes for a beautiful space that feels fresh but with Basque character. 

Spend mornings enjoying coffee with a side of fresh air and contemplation as you step out onto the balcony right off the master bedroom. Of course, you can also slip into the garden to claim one of the sun loungers, turning yourself, like a sunflower, towards the source of the warmth.

Oyster Cove

This elegant home is a superb base for large groups. It sits in the Gironde department, in a position ideal for visiting both Bordeaux and Saint-Émilion, though you may find yourself entirely content to stay put. The home is set within 52 acres of grounds with walking and jogging trails, and your host can even arrange for you to go horse-riding. The estate also boasts its own vineyard, so wine tasting is a must. We love the swimming pool and the terrace for alfresco dining, and the tennis court will be popular with more active guests. This is a traditional home so the decor won’t suit those seeking a sleek, modern space.

Enjoy a tranquil stay at this peaceful French sanctuary, located just a short drive away from Bordeaux city centre, as well as all the beautiful vineyards that make this area so renowned with wine lovers. There, you can take a walk along the famous promenade which is lined by restaurants and bars, discover the city's museums, and spot some notable sights, like the 11th-century Bordeaux Cathedral. 

However you spend your day, you'll love coming home to your bright, welcoming home. Take the spiral stairs up to the rooftop terrace, armed with a bottle of local wine, to watch the sky envelop into hues of reds and oranges at dusk. When dinner rolls around, your kitchen is perfectly equipped for whipping up meals at home. But if you don't feel like cooking, there are several brilliant restaurants nearby, ready to welcome you. 

City Tropicale

Combining French Regency style with sleek modern accents, this elegant apartment in the heart of the Golden Triangle is an excellent launch-pad for discovering the very best of Bordeaux. Wake up with an espresso and a buttery croissant in the opulent living space – we loved the double height ceilings, parquet flooring and triptych of French doors. Recline on the plush sofa with a crossword puzzle until you’re ready to take the city by storm. 

Spend sunny afternoons strolling around the nearby Jardin Public before nipping into the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design. Visit the iconic Place de la Bourse, treat yourself to a shopping spree on the Rue Sainte-Catherine and admire the 15th-century Porte Cailhau. In the early evening, after a bite to eat in a revered brasserie, head home with a bottle of the region’s famous wine and enjoy a glass or two on your private balcony as the sky turns violet. 

The Régence

With its long licks of golden sand, fragrant pine forests and impeccable oysters, Arcachon is an unmissable spot on the southwest coast of France. And where better to base yourself than this modern apartment, situated in the heart of town, just a minute’s walk from the seafront. Inside the abode, we loved the subtle nautical touches and we couldn’t get enough of the south-facing balcony, especially at sundown with a glass of red in hand. Rustle up French culinary classics in the compact kitchenette or dine out at a seafood restaurant a five-minute walk from your doorstep. Spend warm afternoons cycling along the promenade, then take the fifteen-minute drive to survey the landscape from Dune du Pilat, Europe’s highest sand dune. When the day draws to a close, retreat home to your quiet bedroom for a blissful slumber in your comfortable bed.
