Although this home sits close to the centre of Bourdeaux – France's sixth-most populous city, no less – this home's cute facade would easily slot into a quiet corner of the surrounding wine-producing landscape. The patterned bricks, verandah and alfresco dining table on the decking all bring a taste of country living to this vibrant metropolis.

By contrast, the home's interior is a lot more contemporary than you might expect. Aside from the bright red sofa, the colour palette leans heavily on soothingly modern whites and greys. Decoration is sparse, but that's the current vogue for minimalism rather than neglect. We've got particular praise for the kitchen, which has a wealth of sleek surfaces for cooking up local ingredients. 

The local area has a residential feel, but guests are close to many of Bourdeaux's main attractions. Rue Sainte Catherine – one of the longest pedestrianised streets in Europe – is only 1km away and has a huge range of shops to peruse. There are characteristic cobbled streets and buildings in the historic district, only 1.5km from the front door.

From the colourful artwork down to the chequerboard tiles, it's clear that this apartment in Arcachon is not your typical beach getaway. We love the vibrant and funky vibe inside, which feels more akin to something you'd find in Paris or London rather than a seaside town in France. Unwind with a glass of local wine on the plush pink settee (Bordeaux's wine region is an hour away), curl up with a book in the bright green armchair and share meals around the mid-century dining table. The whole place is roomy and bright, and though two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed, it's tucked away in an alcove so it won't disrupt the flow of the living area. There's even a sweet courtyard – it's a great spot to enjoy a cafe au lait in the morning or a cocktail in the evening. Plage d'Arcachon is just a ten-minute walk away, so grab a towel and spend the day on the beach. You're also a fifteen-minute stroll from the restaurants, bars and shops in town, so this is a great base for exploring.

Having lived a former life as a wine and cognac press, this beautifully converted home has retained all of its charm, along with exposed beams and brickwork. Spend your days in the 17th-century conversion – when you’re not off exploring historical sites or teeing off at any of the three surrounding golf courses – by doing as much or as little as you’d like.

Read sprawled out on the sofa, only moving to top up your coffee, or take your reading outdoors, keeping your nose in a novel as you relax poolside. With this region being amongst the sunniest in France, you can expect beautiful weather all year round – perfect for a swim and some sunbathing. 

Pack snacks and wine and walk around the 12 acres of parkland in search of the perfect spot for a picnic. Enjoy the sunshine and fresh air, exploring beaches and towns nearby.
