This smart apartment in the heart of the Bordeaux's Grands Hommes district is just a few steps from the bustling Cours de l'Intendance and Rue Sainte Catherine, so you can check out its many high-end shops, mini-markets, fabulous restaurants and the Grand Théâtre with ease. The home's been designed with comfort in mind, so you'll soon make the space your own. From the outside, it's a beautiful stone building, dating back to the 19th-century, but stepping through the front door you'll find a clean-cut flat with sleek, contemporary finishes. 

An open-plan layout makes for seamless modern living, where you can be cooking up a meal in the island kitchen, fitted with timelessly elegant marble countertops, while keeping up with conversation in the living space. Here, the stylish furnishings, palm-themed design and waxed houseplants create the perfect spot to unwind and debrief after a long day of sightseeing. We love the funky wallpaper prints and colourful tones throughout the home, especially in the dedicated desk and home office space, perfect for those visiting on business. 

Green Grape

A short journey from Arcachon and Bordeaux, this hidden gem provides a retreat from the familiar, only moments away from the calming waves of sea. Only around 200m away from the bay, this home near the popular Arcachon Basin exudes calm from the moment you lay your eyes on it. Tucked away between trees, and with an ocean view from the backyard, it seems to encourage you to switch off, forget about time, and simply exist on your own terms. 

Inside, the combination of modern furnishings, eclectic decorative pieces, and some of the original features – the flooring and archways remain untouched – makes for a beautiful space that feels fresh but with Basque character. 

Spend mornings enjoying coffee with a side of fresh air and contemplation as you step out onto the balcony right off the master bedroom. Of course, you can also slip into the garden to claim one of the sun loungers, turning yourself, like a sunflower, towards the source of the warmth. 

After lunch at the rattan dining table, pour wine – not forgetting the cheese and crackers to nibble on – and find comfort on the shaded terrace. If you’d like to get even better acquainted with the landscapes of La Teste-de-Buch, you can visit the Dune du Pilat or spend the day at the beach.

Red Fences

Located in the Bassin d’Arcachon, this charming home sits like a gateway to the refreshing beauty of southwest France. And with views across the surrounding trees, this is the kind of space that has all the qualities of a sanctuary in the woods. 

Stepping inside, you’ll find the gentle lighting and artistic presence of this home provides an instant sense of ease and calm. It’s the perfect place to let go of to–do lists and embrace the simple magic of coastal living. 

Open the doors from the living room and you’ll find the outdoor terrace is perfectly poised for relaxing mornings with a coffee or dreamy sunset drinks. From here, the space opens itself up to slow days reading on the sofa, cooking and sharing atmospheric candle–lit dinners. 

Outside, it’s just a five–minute drive into the centre of Arcachon where the Atlantic Ocean awaits. This is the ideal setting to connect with the vibrant beachside atmosphere, sample the famous oysters and savour the views from Dune of Pilat – just a five–minute drive away. Golfers will also love the close proximity to Golf d’Arcachon – just a three–minute drive away. 

The Blue View

Although this home sits close to the centre of Bourdeaux – France's sixth-most populous city, no less – this home's cute facade would easily slot into a quiet corner of the surrounding wine-producing landscape. The patterned bricks, verandah and alfresco dining table on the decking all bring a taste of country living to this vibrant metropolis.

By contrast, the home's interior is a lot more contemporary than you might expect. Aside from the bright red sofa, the colour palette leans heavily on soothingly modern whites and greys. Decoration is sparse, but that's the current vogue for minimalism rather than neglect. We've got particular praise for the kitchen, which has a wealth of sleek surfaces for cooking up local ingredients. 

The local area has a residential feel, but guests are close to many of Bourdeaux's main attractions. Rue Sainte Catherine – one of the longest pedestrianised streets in Europe – is only 1km away and has a huge range of shops to peruse. There are characteristic cobbled streets and buildings in the historic district, only 1.5km from the front door.

A Drop of Red

With its timber exterior and chalet-esque shape, you could be forgiven for envisioning some rustic living quarters upon first glance of this home close to Arcachon Bay. However, step behind the glass doors and guests are greeted by a contemporary interior bathed in natural light and furnished with Scandi-style furnishings – not to mention a super-sleek kitchen designed with minimalism in mind.

However, this is a corner of France in which people try to pass as many hours as possible spent outside and you can do that on the home's verandah, complete with a lounge, barbecue and alfresco dining table, which overlooks the local forest. Alternatively, there's a swimming pool shared with other local residences on the site in which to splash about on warm afternoons, plus children's play equipment, a volleyball court and a bowling green.

And that's not forgetting the wealth of attractions that await in the nearby area. The Dune of Pilat – the tallest in Europe – can be reached on foot via a hiking route and there's also a great selection of beaches in the local region. Both the towns of Arcachon and La Teste-de-Buch have plenty of markets, restaurants and grand architecture to discover, too.

Saunter the Shoreline

Escape to this luxury chateau for an idyllic getaway, nestled in the hills of the Entre Deux Mers vineyards. You'll find this picturesque 18th-century castle in expansive private grounds, surrounded by lush greenery and complete with a large Roman-style pool and plenty of terraces where you can soak up the sun. Though we're sure you'll be spending most of your time outdoors, you'll be equally impressed by the interior of this home, which brings together a quirky and cool mix of traditional style and contemporary chic. Brimming with character, many of the castle's original features have been retained, with the rustic fixtures and finishes adding warmth to the space. Wake up to a continental buffet-style breakfast every morning or ask your host to arrange a private chef to make hosting dinner parties a breeze. Spend your days swimming under the trees, or playing billiards in the games room. Rent some bikes and head into the quaint village of Arbis to explore the Gironde and sample the local wines.

Divine

Just a three-minute walk from the Plage d'Arcachon beach, this modern apartment boasts sparkling sea views over the red rooftops. On your doorstep, you'll discover the lovely Les Halles market, where you can pick up fresh fruit and local produce. Or, why not try your luck at the seafront Casino d'Arcachon? With lots of exciting boat trips at hand, there is something for everyone to enjoy at this dreamy holiday destination.

From your Juliet balcony, you'll want to let the breeze rush through the bedroom as you overlook the beautiful bay, only 400 metres away. Each morning, indulge your sweet tooth at this sleek dining table and opt for pain au chocolat. When it's time to explore, we think that this place promises you the perfect base, whether you're staying here on a solo adventure or a romantic getaway. Later, come back to this serene space and soak your feet in the bathtub, then pour yourself a glass of French wine as you watch an idyllic sunset.

Oyster Cove

With its long licks of golden sand, fragrant pine forests and impeccable oysters, Arcachon is an unmissable spot on the southwest coast of France. And where better to base yourself than this modern apartment, situated in the heart of town, just a minute’s walk from the seafront. Inside the abode, we loved the subtle nautical touches and we couldn’t get enough of the south-facing balcony, especially at sundown with a glass of red in hand. Rustle up French culinary classics in the compact kitchenette or dine out at a seafood restaurant a five-minute walk from your doorstep. Spend warm afternoons cycling along the promenade, then take the fifteen-minute drive to survey the landscape from Dune du Pilat, Europe’s highest sand dune. When the day draws to a close, retreat home to your quiet bedroom for a blissful slumber in your comfortable bed.
