Yes, this home in the middle of the Tarn countryside dates back to the 19th century and is surrounded by 32 hectares of idyllic meadows, but this isn't the rustic getaway you might assume from first impression. How could it be so when the list of amenities at guests' disposal is so impressive?

Given the rather enviable climate that this corner of South France enjoys, you probably won't be surprised to learn that many of these lie outside. The first one that's likely to grab your attention is the swimming pool, but wander around a bit more and you'll discover everything from a sauna and six-person Jacuzzi to a tennis court and bar in the poolhouse for afterwards.

The home itself still retains an air of grandeur – all high ceilings, parquet floors and chandeliers. There are plenty of large communal spaces in which to gather together, but a fair few more private spots to escape the group for a peaceful moment. Chief among them is the rather elegant freestanding tub in the master bathroom.

One thing you'll quickly appreciate here is just how tranquil the locale is, with even the nearest village sitting 6km away. The surrounding area is peppered with charming towns and scenic hillside walking routes, while Toulouse is only 55km away, too.



Monsieur of the Manor

Located in the centre of the historical city of Toulouse, known as 'The Pink City' due to its warm-hued buildings, this cosy apartment is the perfect pad for couples and solo travellers. 

Inside, the arched ceilings create a welcoming and serene cocooning effect to the living room, while the original brick fireplace will have you feeling right at home. Sink into the plush mustard-yellow sofa with your holiday read, fling the Parisian-style windows open and listen to the bustling streets below. The bedroom is intricately designed to maximise the space, with its inside-out windows and colourful decor, while the ensuite includes a bathtub for an indulgent soak at the end of a day of sightseeing. 

When you're not enjoying the home comforts, head out for a riverside stroll along the Garonne, before stopping off for a bite to eat at one of several charming cafés or restaurants. You're a short walk from the Basilique Saint-Sernin and the Musée des Augustins, for those in town for art and culture. 

Toulouse Cocoon

Close to the Baqueira-Beret ski resort, this charming home boasts peace and quiet, along with a 600 square metre garden. With all bedrooms on the first floor, guests who struggle with stairs might be better off looking elsewhere, and we think some of the furnishings are a little dated. But the balcony views are stunning, and the stone fireplace along with piano and antique furniture give it a warmth you won't find just anywhere. Larger groups can also rent the neighbouring chalet, so everyone is guaranteed space to stretch their legs.

The Cinder

This chalet-style apartment puts you within strolling (or shooping) distance of the ski lift to Banqueira Beret. A favourite ski resort with former Spanish king, Juan Carlos, the runs and slopes of Banqueira Beret are fit for royalty. It’s just a five-minute walk to the nearest ski lift and returning to this apartment after a day on the slopes is a real treat.

Get a fire crackling in the stone fireplace for those cosy Alpine vibes and cuddle up on the big, L-shaped sofa. Darkwood furniture feels classy and matches the classic chalet-style wooden ceilings. Perhaps the best thing about the living area is the view of the mountains from the glass-panelled doors, so you can catch a glimpse of your winter sports playground before you experience the runs and pistes for yourself. Shared grounds between the apartments are home to picnic areas and playparks, letting you know this place is family-friendly. 

Shoop, Baby, Shoop

With timber-clad walls and A-frame ceilings, this top-floor apartment really is as welcoming as it looks. It's got chalet charm in spades and plenty of space to spread out, too – not to mention idyllic views of the snow-capped mountains from the skylight windows.

Watch the skiers fly down the 'Back Home' piste as you rustle up something tasty in the open-plan kitchen. Set on a single floor, the living room is equipped with an extra single bed for children. It also has a practical laundry room, a full bathroom and a comfortable double bedroom – all the essentials. We think it's best for couples with a little one.

Best of all is the fantastic location – you're just a two-minute walk from the gondola lift, which can whisk you away to the runs on the Baqueira-Beret ski resort. Also on your doorstep are swanky wine bars, local restaurants and fantastic hiking trails if you're visiting during the warmer months. Whether you plan on trekking through the Pyrenees, hitting the slopes or exploring the postcard-worthy scenery in the Val d'Aran, this is a perfect pad for a Spanish getaway.

Timber Slopes

Just a glance at this Château and it’s not hard to see why Harper's Bazaar Italia awarded it the title of number one large villa in Europe. Reputedly a gift from Napoleon to one of his generals, every detail of this 19th Century home is an ode to the magic of French living. From the elegant rooms and luxurious details to the heated swimming pool and outdoor dining areas, this is the perfect setting for a rejuvenating retreat. There are five acres of serene grounds to explore and your host is on hand to help organise a range of extras – including private chefs and massage treatments. You will need a car to get around here, but it’s just a short drive to the town of Beaumont de Lomagne and a little further on to Toulouse.

Castle of Dreams

Anyone who thinks large homes lack personality clearly never visited Form Over Function. This immense castle may have nine bedrooms and a four-hectare estate, but it retains its 13th-century character (along with corresponding low doorways). Originally built by a Cathar Lord, it’s now owned by a sculptor whose work is scattered across the grounds. The 86-square-metre Knights’ Hall with library was made for banquets, so bring your best mead and tuck into a mediaeval meal you’ll never forget. There’s also a separate 4-bedroom cottage on the grounds, which can be hired for an additional fee.

Form over Function

Embrace the magic of Toulouse in this sunny loft apartment. Despite being in the bustling, culturally rich Palais de Justice neighbourhood, your quiet road provides a sanctuary from which to escape the crowds.

Toulouse itself is a wonderful mix of old-world charm and new-age characteristics, which is complemented beautifully in this home of stark contrasts. Shimmering glass and the uber-modern kitchen work well with the stone brick walls and classic dining table, creating a space that’s light yet homely. 

The skylights are partly responsible for the stunning natural light, but you can make the most of it on your sunny terrace. You’ll love your morning coffees out here, overlooking the road below. When it’s time to explore the city, the famously pink, cobblestone streets of Toulouse await. Then, take a romantic stroll down the Canal du Midi – you can even hop on a boat to see the city from another view. Finish off your day with a candlelit meal in one of the local spots, or rustle up dinner in your well-equipped kitchen.

A stay here includes an equipment locker and car park space at the foot of the slopes.

Inside, the living room is blissfully sunny during the day, thanks to a wall of panelled glass showing off a mountainside view. There’s plenty of room for the group to gather on the corner sofa piled high with cushions and a big feature fireplace commands the attention of the room. The main living area opens up to the big dining area and kitchen, so even the chef of the group can keep one ear in the conversation. Kids will love their own space in the downstairs family room with vibrant bean bags and a squashy sofa for movie nights.

Casa Nature

Straight out of a belle époque style painting is this large chateau not far from Toulouse and big enough for the entire extended family. With views of the neighbouring vineyards from the home’s balconies, you will feel truly immersed in the grape harvest at the right time of year. Eat breakfast on the veranda while the kids float in the pool and enjoy days walking in the heart of wine country. Cycle into to nearby Gaillac for fresh cheese to enjoy with wine on the terrace and various herbs collected from the garden. The wildlife you can spot on the property was a highlight for us. Keep your eyes peeled for roe deer in the morning and listen for nightingales to sing you to sleep.
