Glass panels sit above beamed ceilings, skylights have been added to the slanted roof, and French doors flood the open living space with sunshine. Bedrooms are strikingly modern, the attic room paying homage to the ocean with a monochrome beach print and knotted lamp stands, while the master's sliding doors open up to a large en-suite with a huge rainfall shower. On cooler days, the feature fireplace is the perfect place to warm up – though bright sunflower prints give the impression of an endless summer. The outdoor pool and sun loungers are on hand for those hot, balmy days and the large gardens hide several seating spots, including a patio with outdoor kitchen and barbecue for whipping up something delicious.

Closer to home, the classic indoor market of Les Halles de Saint-Jean-de-Luz is less than a minute from the apartment, where you can stock up on fresh, local produce to take back to the full kitchen. With a truly enviable location on the Pyrénées-Atlantiques overlooking the endless blue of the Atlantic Ocean, this 1930s-style villa was made for lazy summer afternoons.

There are a plethora of spots to sit and soak up the sunshine, whether that's surveying the surroundings from the balcony, tucking into dinner on the terrace or reading in the peaceful gardens. If this all sounds a little too inactive, you're more than welcome to notch up a couple of lengths in the swimming pool or hone your forehand on the tennis court.

The interior feels bright and cooling thanks to the white walls, tiled flooring and French doors. An extensive collection of colourful artwork is sure to catch the eye, although it must be said that sports fans will much prefer the foosball table.

When it comes to beaches, both Grand Plage and Plage d'Erromardie sit only twenty minutes' walk from the home, while the portside restaurants and market of St Jean de Luz take slightly longer. The resort town of Biarritz is just a half-hour drive away, too.

The Front Row

Found in the French commune of Arraute-Charritte, this typical basque house is bursting with understated charm and an inviting atmosphere that’s hard to ignore. Step foot inside and you’ll find yourself longing for easy mornings and long, contented afternoons. Start with coffee in bed as you stay under the plush covers for a while longer to finish one more chapter of the novel you’re reading. When a hungry tummy can no longer be ignored, pad downstairs to put together a breakfast of croissants and scrambled eggs – although it can be enjoyed at the dining table, you may as well elevate every meal by dining alfresco in the garden. 

Days at home can be spent between the living room, where you can stretch out on the couch to get some more reading down, the kitchen, where you can regularly top up your coffee, and the outdoors, where the fresh country air will invigorate the senses. If you’re looking to explore, Biarritz is around a fifty-minute drive away and it’s known for long sandy beaches. Return home after a day of sun and surf to put your feet up, and don’t forget to make use of that sprawling lawn for a bit of late-night stargazing.

Maitenminduta, which means to be in love, is perfectly located to experience all that the city has to offer. Head into the bay of La Concha for an early morning swim or walk just a short way to the Old Town at the tip of the Peninsula for a culinary experience you won’t soon forget. Bustling with bars and restaurants, you’ll want to take on the Old Town with a great appetite. Famous for its pintxos, these small snacks go brilliantly with any of the local beers, wines and ciders. Sun-seekers are spoilt for choice, with Zurriola Beach just minutes away and the crescent-shaped sands of La Concha Beach a little further down the coast. San Sebastian’s historic old town is also close by, where you can meander the maze-like streets. Make sure you dive into some of the famous foodie pintxo bars and enjoy tasty snacks as you drink some Spanish wine. If you’re feeling active, you can hike up Monte Igueldo for beautiful views across the bay, or take the hundred-year-old funicular railway. Back at the apartment you’ll find space to lounge and relax in the open-plan living area. There’s also a small balcony where you can sip a sundowner before heading to bed in true comfort.

Once you’re full of delicious tapas, you'll be relieved to know it's only a short walk back to the apartment for a blissful night’s sleep.

Large and very well-located, this home offers a great home base for guests looking to experience this undeniably alluring city. Fully equipped and renovated to a high standard, there’s plenty of room for you to socialise in the open-plan living area, relax in the serene bedrooms and prepare delicious meals in the sleek, modern kitchen. That being said, we don’t think you’ll need the kitchen too often given that you’re visiting one of the world’s greatest culinary cities.
