We love the mix of old and new in this charming country house on the outskirts of Mimizan. Glass panels sit above beamed ceilings, skylights have been added to the slanted roof, and French doors flood the open living space with sunshine. Bedrooms are strikingly modern, the attic room paying homage to the ocean with a monochrome beach print and knotted lamp stands, while the master's sliding doors open up to a large en-suite with a huge rainfall shower. On cooler days, the feature fireplace is the perfect place to warm up – though bright sunflower prints give the impression of an endless summer. The outdoor pool and sun loungers are on hand for those hot, balmy days and the large gardens hide several seating spots, including a patio with outdoor kitchen and barbecue for whipping up something delicious.

However, this is a corner of France in which people try to pass as many hours as possible spent outside and you can do that on the home's verandah, complete with a lounge, barbecue and alfresco dining table, which overlooks the local forest. With the Pyrenees in the distance, this beautiful chateau sits in the Pays Basque, near the Spanish border. If you asked a child to draw a fairytale castle, this is probably what they would come up with – ivy-dappled turrets and a rose-pink hue. Acres of tree-filled grounds surround this home, where you’ll find a private swimming pool for lazy days on loungers and a tennis court with an automatic ball machine if you want to practice your serve. There’s plenty of room for the group to dine outside, admiring the pretty facade of this historic abode.

Inside, choose between three lavish lounges for evenings with a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Midi-Pyrenees. The 19th-century stylings of grand fireplaces, an upright piano and velvet chaise longues pair perfectly with a full-bodied red. Gathering at the formal dining table, you can feel how French nobility lived in days gone by. We love the kitchen which is a riot of colour yet retains a farmhouse feel with its big, range cooker and cast-iron kettles and pots. Or, head further afield and take a day trip to Biarritz on the coast – it’s an easy drive away. Within the immediate area, Peyrehorade is the closest town (13km away) where you can stock up on supplies or just take a stroll along the river.

When it comes to beaches, both Grand Plage and Plage d'Erromardie sit only twenty minutes' walk from the home, while the portside restaurants and market of St Jean de Luz take slightly longer. The resort town of Biarritz is just a half-hour drive away, too.

From the colourful artwork down to the chequerboard tiles, it's clear that this apartment in Arcachon is not your typical beach getaway. We love the vibrant and funky vibe inside, which feels more akin to something you'd find in Paris or London rather than a seaside town in France. Stay until evening and watch the sun go down over the Grande Dune du Pilat – the tallest sand dune in Europe – or make your way back home for a barbecue beneath the pine trees. Whatever you get up to, we know you’ll be seeing la vie en rose by the end of your first day here at this luxury seaside escape.

Perched above a gorgeous stretch of coast, this Hossegor retreat combines stunning views with close proximity to the beach and the city centre. In this surfer's paradise, their tastes are well-catered for – you're far more likely to grab something healthy than anything with chips in the nearby eateries. We think the home is better suited to a family or firm friends, given any nighttime trips to the bathroom involve using the only bedroom's ensuite. And with free parking available, you're not only confined to the local beaches – drive to the forest at Landes, or the nearby city of Bordeaux.
