With its timber exterior and chalet-esque shape, you could be forgiven for envisioning some rustic living quarters upon first glance of this home close to Arcachon Bay. However, step behind the glass doors and guests are greeted by a contemporary interior bathed in natural light and furnished with Scandi-style furnishings – not to mention a super-sleek kitchen designed with minimalism in mind.

However, this is a corner of France in which people try to pass as many hours as possible spent outside and you can do that on the home's verandah, complete with a lounge, barbecue and alfresco dining table, which overlooks the local forest. It's the perfect spot to watch the evening draw to a close, savouring a home-cooked meal in the fresh air and enjoying each other's company. Inside, the light-filled living room has books to peruse and a cosy sofa where you can sprawl out and rest your feet. If you need to do some work on your getaway, there's a desk in the bedroom, or the dining table is an excellent spot to hop on a Zoom call and check your emails. With a truly enviable location on the Pyrénées-Atlantiques overlooking the endless blue of the Atlantic Ocean, this 1930s-style villa was made for lazy summer afternoons.

There are a plethora of spots to sit and soak up the sunshine, whether that's surveying the surroundings from the balcony, tucking into dinner on the terrace or reading in the peaceful gardens. If this all sounds a little too inactive, you're more than welcome to notch up a couple of lengths in the swimming pool or hone your forehand on the tennis court.

The interior feels bright and cooling thanks to the white walls, tiled flooring and French doors. An extensive collection of colourful artwork is sure to catch the eye, although it must be said that sports fans will much prefer the foosball table.

When it comes to beaches, both Grand Plage and Plage d'Erromardie sit only twenty minutes' walk from the home, while the portside restaurants and market of St Jean de Luz take slightly longer. The resort town of Biarritz is just a half-hour drive away, too.

The Front Row

Situated in the curious seaside town of Biarritz, where upscale boutiques sit beside laidback surf shops, this breezy apartment is the perfect base from which to explore France’s southwestern coast. Inside the home, it’s relaxed and light-filled with glorious ocean views from the living space and bedroom. Begin slow mornings with brioche and espresso on your private balcony or potter about in the pale-painted living space, putting together a picnic in the kitchenette ahead of an afternoon at the beach. Choose between the Plage De La Chambre D'Amour, a fifteen-minute stroll from your doorstep, and the Plage Miramar, reached in less than ten minutes by foot. After frolicking in the shallows and basking in the sunshine, take the twenty-minute walk into the centre of town for glasses of full-bodied red in traditional bistros and tastes of artisanal produce in Halles Market – you mustn’t leave without trying a slice of indulgent gâteau basque.

This modern and attractive holiday rental property, built in 2022, is located in La Teste De Buch, just 5 km from the sea and the beach. This single-family house boasts a private fenced property of 380 m2 with a seasonal swimming pool (5 x 3 m) that features an internal staircase and alarm system. The house includes two beautifully appointed bedrooms - one with a French bed and another with two beds - and a well-equipped open kitchen with modern appliances. The living/dining room has air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, and access to a large west-facing terrace (45 m2) with outdoor furniture and an electric barbecue. We think you’ll love this charming seaside abode we’ve found tucked away on the west coast of France, just 60 km from Bordeaux. Styled by your host Karine, a former interior designer, this place is certainly worth writing home about, full of soft fabrics and natural tones that make you feel at ease the second you step over the threshold. 

When you first arrive, spend a few moments decompressing in the living room before crossing the polished concrete floor to make yourself a light lunch. Once you’ve eaten, it’s time to explore so grab your sunglasses and get going. You’re just a two minute walk from Plage du Moulleau here, but if you want to venture further, Arcachon is thirteen minutes away by bike and full of interesting shops and restaurants to discover. Stay until evening and watch the sun go down over the Grande Dune du Pilat – the tallest sand dune in Europe – or make your way back home for a barbecue beneath the pine trees. Whatever you get up to, we know you’ll be seeing la vie en rose by the end of your first day here at this luxury seaside escape.

It sits in the Gironde department, in a position ideal for visiting both Bordeaux and Saint-Émilion, though you may find yourself entirely content to stay put. The home is set within 52 acres of grounds with walking and jogging trails, and your host can even arrange for you to go horse-riding. The estate also boasts its own vineyard, so wine tasting is a must. We love the swimming pool and the terrace for alfresco dining, and the tennis court will be popular with more active guests. This is a traditional home so the decor won’t suit those seeking a sleek, modern space.

This cosy and tranquil pad is a wonderful option for a romantic getaway or a small family stay, with easy access to all the highlights of its gorgeous setting. This corner of France is renowned for its many natural wonders, as well as being a surfer’s dream – and it’s all at your fingertips here. 

The open-plan living room gets plenty of natural light thanks to the huge windows which open directly onto the private garden. Lounge about on the comfy sofa and enjoy evenings of French wine and movie nights in the company of your loved one. You’ll be able to rustle up delicious meals in the well-equipped kitchenette – share them at the indoor dining table or outside in the shadow of the beautiful trees.

While the bedroom may be small in scale, it offers a cosy vibe and a soft bed – wake up restored and get ready to explore the area. Outside your door, you’ll find yourself in the perfect location for reaching the ocean, as well as the forest, which lies just across the fence. Rent a bike and venture down the famous trails or for a day of city strolls you’ll have the choice between the coastal grandeur of Biarritz and the quiet charm of Bayonne, both within a fifteen-minute drive away.

This apartment is located in the Miramar district of Biarritz, just 100m from the beach and sea. It's got stylish furnishings and all the essential amenities. One bedroom has a double bed and there's a sofa bed in the living area suitable for one child. Guests can enjoy partial views of the ocean from the apartment. It's conveniently located within walking distance of shops, restaurants, cafes, and public transportation. Additionally, it comes with reserved parking, which is fenced for added security. Please note that smoking is not allowed.

You’ll also be in close proximity to great surfing schools and a golf course, and for an interesting day trip, the sister city of Bayonne is just a fifteen-minute drive away. 

The Pearl of the Ocean 

Better known for its Atlantic rollers and camping sites, this stretch of the French coast is all about laid-back summer living. On the outskirts of Bidart, this home epitomises that with its clean lines and minimalist style. Using white walls, yellow sofas, and geometric light fittings, the apartment feels modern and new. Chill out on one of the Eames rocking chairs, soak up some rays on the deckchairs or watch what's cooking in the kitchen from the breakfast bar. A small balcony looks out over hills and other homes and is our favourite spot for assessing the conditions for the day's adventures. If surfing is on the cards, it's less than a 10-minute drive to Bidart beach, while Biarritz and its glamorous facade is just 15. Not in the mood for that much activity? We suggest padding down to the communal pool for lengths, before heading back to the terrace for a glass of something icy.
