The textures of this home are thoughtful and refined – the cafe-style breakfast table is a delight to sip your morning coffee from, and the crushed velour chairs are a perfect spot to unwind with a glass of Muscadet after a day exploring the Château des ducs de Bretagne.

Step out of your apartment and amble along the canal with a crêpe in hand. Spend the morning perusing the Le Lieu Unique cultural centre before settling in for lunch at a local bistrots serving up regional classics. Spend the afternoon exploring the Jardin des Plantes before catching a performance at the Théâtre Graslin.

This former Breton capital turned cultural hub boasts the sensationally Gothic Cathédrale St-Pierre et St-Paul, the multimedia-rich Château des Ducs, and the memorable Mémorial de l’Abolition de l’Esclavage all within two to fifteen minutes’ walking distance of your home. Overlooking the Loire river and sitting in the heart of Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Natural Park, this home's spot on the map is perfect for those in thrall to the French countryside and the large plant-filled garden – almost as large as the house itself – gives you plenty of space and seating to bask in this picturesque scenery.

There's something equally charming about the home's interior, with a range of design influences on display, from rustic wooden ceiling beams and the period fireplace to bursts of bold floral wallpaper and mid-century-inspired furnishings. Given the small guest count, the kitchen is perhaps more generously sized than you might have anticipated and finished off with pretty tiles, too.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the bucolic region, there are ample wine estates and castles to discover, as well as two characterful towns that are easily reached by car. The nearest, Saumur, is the French capital of horses with exhibits and equestrian shows to catch, while Angers is slightly further away and is renowned for its medieval architecture and cultural institutions.

Lifeblood of the Valley

In a rural village in one of the sunniest regions of France, tucked next to a historic church lies a medieval priory, converted from a Manor house in the fourteenth century to a truly magical home. The interiors are the highest quality and feel both historic and luxurious, while outside picturesque gardens are surrounded by an original stone wall. The pool looks out over unbeatable vistas of the surrounding hills. The host can even arrange al fresco evening meals on the terrace, if that should take your fancy. There's also an abundance of walks on and around the property to uncover, as well as multiple local vineyards, historic villages and countryside visits well within reach.

Stone and English Roses

This delightful home stands out from the crowd. It’s a unique and stylish apartment, spread over two floors, with the ground floor arranged around a patio. The kitchen, living room and master suite all have direct access to this charming suntrap, which is a real haven in the heart of the city. 

In the morning, you’ll wake up to sunbeams on your pillow. Step outside to sip your coffee in the peace of the patio, before indulging in a luxurious bath in the master en-suite – or perhaps you’ll start the day beneath the Italian rain shower? Fine finishes and elegant touches abound in this home, where contemporary decor meets with the historic charm of Nantes. 

Cooking breakfast in the open kitchen is a delight, with everything you might need is close to hand. Dine together at the oh-so-chic industrial-style dining table. Later on, you might get competitive playing table tennis, or maybe you prefer a more sedate pace? Curl up in an armchair with a book from the library – there’s no shortage of comfy corners here. 

The apartment is ideally located for exploring Nantes, with the botanical gardens just down the street. The cathedral is a short walk away, and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby – as ever in France, you’re never far from your next delicious meal here. 


Coffee On The Patio

Sitting within a 100-hectare estate that dates back to the 18th century, this marvellous home was once the residence of an important general during conflicts following the French Revolution. Given this impressive heritage, it's perhaps no surprise to learn that the interior still retains a sense of grandeur. However, don't confuse this with dusty and staid – as the locals might say, there's a joie de vivre to be discovered at the address.

Much of this is down to the interior design, which mixes together antique furnishings, bold print wallpaper and portraits hanging in every room. We love the lavish dining table set under a chandelier, but also appreciate the modern additions as well – we're fairly sure the aforementioned general didn't have the games room to keep him occupied while he was holed up here, but we're willing to stand corrected.

It's a similar story outside. The well-kempt gardens and rosebeds make for a charming backdrop as you stroll about the grounds, but you're also more than welcome to take a dip in the swimming pool or play a match or two of tennis on the private court. There's equipment for badminton or volleyball too if they're more your sport.

There's a lot to discover in the surrounding Vendée, as well. The sweeping beaches on the Pays de la Loire coastline start from as close as 30km away, while galleries and restaurants in the vibrant city of Nantes lie 43km to the north. A little closer to home, the nearest village is 2.5km away and has a pair of bakeries, a supermarket and a restaurant to tide you over.

General Interest

If your perfect holiday consists of a mixture of eighteenth-century aesthetics and twenty-first-century luxuries, then a home like Cocktails & Peacocks is the way to go. This big and extravagant mansion is prefect if you're trying to accommodate a large family or a group of friends around an event or simply to explore the joyous sights of the Loire Valley. Winos among you will be glad to hear that some of the finest vineyards in the area are a mere hour's drive from here and we hope you'll go one few tasting trips while you're in the area. When you're not exploring the locale, chill in the private pool or de-stress in the eight-seater jacuzzi. If neither of these two options are hot enough for you, hit the sauna. Every single room is regal and furnished with antiques, which will make every moment spent here special — especially the meals you'll share in the baroque-inspired dining room. On dreamy afternoons, walk around the gardens and make friends with the peacocks, then play a a game of billiards accompanied by the sweet sound of a piano.

Cocktails & Peacocks

Whether you’re visiting Nantes on business or planning a family holiday in the city, this bright apartment situated close to the historic centre is a great place to base yourself. You’ll benefit from the convenient location as well as all the comforts offered by this home. 

The inside boasts a large open-plan living and dining room, with plenty of space to kick back and relax after a long day of exploring. Lounge about on the comfy sofa and settle in for an evening of wine and movies in the company of your loved ones. While there’s no shortage of great restaurants in Nantes, you may also opt for a quiet evening in, in which case the well-stocked kitchen will make rustling up a quick and delicious supper a work of mere moments. You can share your meals at the dining table, and there’s also a lovely balcony here, where you can enjoy an after-dinner drink or a morning cup of coffee. 

For a night of restful sleep you’ll have a choice of two equally comfy bedrooms – wake up feeling refreshed and ready for another day of Nantes adventures. 

You’ll find countless delicious dining options in the vicinity, and you’ll be only a short walk from the heart of the city, with buses and trams on your doorstep too. 

The French Sunflower 

We can easily see why Layers Upon Layers was chosen as one of the best homes for breaks in France in 2016 — it's typical French countryside home with oodles of charm and plenty of amenities that will help you make lifelong memories. The interior has been furnished with gorgeous furniture that give it a rather retro-rustic atmosphere, and the host is keen on restoring period features, so that you can immerse yourself into the spirit of rural France. Meneac is far from a ghost town even outside of the tourist season, making it a great destination year-round, but there are plenty of interesting villages and castles to explore in the area. When you've had your fill of sights for the day, return to your holiday residence and try out a new recipe, or get the charcoal barbecue going in the garden. After a nice meal, treat yourself to some local wine and organise a movie night with the help of the big flat-screen TV that's equipped with Freeview. 

Layers Upon Layers

Once a home for horses, this former stable is perfectly placed for a visit to Rennes. Tucked nicely near Thabor Gardens, it allows you to be close to the city yet far enough away from the hustle and bustle that you can enjoy some much-needed quiet time whenever you retreat back home. 
 
With nods to its history through exposed beams and brickwork, this recently renovated home has been beautifully modernised, while retaining its charm. The sleek, modern kitchen is a delight to cook in, should you decide an evening at home is preferred over dining out. Climb the spiral staircase and you’ll find two comfortable bedrooms to choose from, both of which guarantee a blissful night’s sleep. A fairly neutral palette is broken up throughout the home with pops of colour, giving the whole space a calming, cosy vibe.

Our favourite part of this home is the terrace. Quite the sun trap during the day, it’s a peaceful place to retreat to as evening sets in. Grab yourself a bottle of fine French wine and settle down on the sofas with your loved ones. As night falls and a blanket of stars breaks out above, listen to the quiet chatter of your loved ones and feel yourself relax. This is where memories are made. 

Once Upon a Stable

Absorb the rich history and culture of Nantes in this quintessentially French apartment. Nestled within an old building on the famous esplanade, this home offers easy access to the nearby river, as well as historic hotspots such as the Nantes Cathedral and castle.

A private courtyard only adds to the quaint and homely feel of this apartment, featuring a table and chairs perfect for sampling some of the local delicacies alfresco. Whether it’s a croissant and coffee in the morning or a summer evening spent wine and cheese tasting, this quiet courtyard provides somewhere to unwind in between shopping and exploring. 

Inside, rustic charm is in abundance, thanks to stone walls, fireplaces and wooden beams. The home has a cosy feel throughout, with everything you need for a relaxing stay that the whole family can enjoy.

Castle & Courtyard

This home welcomes you to slow down and experience the best of French living. Sitting peacefully on the edge of the river, the garden lends itself perfectly to lazy days by the pool. It’s a great option for families with games and plenty of space for kids to stretch out and play. Inside, the rooms are just as inviting with cosy features and plenty of character. And when it comes to location, it’s just a short cycle ride or drive to the nearest village and market towns, while the famous Puy du Fou theme park is just a fifteen-minute drive away.
