This beautifully renovated sixteenth century farmhouse with sweeping grounds is perfectly suited to a large family or group. Children will love the play room and football goals in the garden, and a couple of the bedrooms are especially designed for kids. The heated salt-water swimming pool really makes this home stand out for us, as does the air-conditioned barn – available for an additional fee – complete with a range of fitness equipment and pool table. Be aware however, that four of the bedrooms and three of the bathrooms are in annexes separate from the main house.

Nestled on the edge of the Causses National Park, this family-friendly villa in the Midi-Pyrenees offers a great base for families looking to explore nearby Dordogne, Cele and Lot river valleys. Premier Cru sits by its own such vineyard and has produced some award-winning Malbec over the years. Cycle by the Lot river to ancient UNESCO world heritage sites and summer music festivals, or swing by the artisan bakeries and Sunday markets. Beauty is everywhere you turn.

If you're after an authentic stay in a historic French castle, look no further –this home offers the ultimate luxury French chateau experience. Of course, you may find that you’re entirely content to stay put most of the time – there’s enough to enjoy at the villa, after all. Wake up early and enjoy a quiet moment in the garden, sipping your coffee as the early-morning sun warms you. After a breakfast of fresh fruit and pastries, lie in the sun beside the pool, occasionally dipping a toe in to test the temperature. A highlight is an on-site church which has been fully converted into a multi-functional hosting space, complete with hi-tech sound system and capacity for 30 seated guests. Nestled in the hills above the Dordogne river, there are walks and views aplenty at your doorstep.

If a slice of the scenic Dordogne countryside were to express itself as a home, this would be it. Be it the pool surrounded by wildflowers and trees, the decadent sauna and hot-tub or evening Tête-à-têtes by the fireside as you sink into plush sofas, every space erases any trace of stress in you. While it's tempting to stay back in this very secure home playing table tennis all day, it'd be a shame to miss the relaxing activities nearby. Vitrac is a perfect town for cycling, horse-riding, golf and idling by riverside beaches. And if it's fishing that tugs at the heartstrings, the home-owner is a fisherman himself and will love to guide you through. One of the best things about Pilgrims & Wine is the way it balances its old-timey charm with modern luxuries, which results in a villa that looks a lit like an ancient Roman holiday home — and we love it. Think raw stone, doors that open outwards onto terraces, a huge pool with its own little shelter, and plenty of nooks for reading and working on your tan. Since there's quite a lot of space, we recommend this one for longer stays where the balance between autonomy and socialising is as important as the fact that you'll be staying far from city noise. When you're not walking around the vast gardens and admiring the far-reaching views, walk (or drive) down to the nearby Lauzerte. Frequently named one of France's ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, it's full of delightful restaurants, shops, and cafes. Make sure your return to your holiday residence with some locally produced wine and sit back on the terrace just in time to admire the sunset.

Where do you even begin at an estate like this? Set in the rolling Dordogne countryside, just a few minutes by car from Saint-Julien-de-Lampon and the superb Dordogne River, it's a staggering prospect with two large homes, two swimming pools and two annexes. Sleeping up to twenty-two guests and with a picture-perfect chapel available for events, it's a once-in-a-lifetime setting for a very special celebration or a gathering of friends and family.

Around twenty-five minutes from the medieval city of Sarlat, this ancient hamlet has been lovingly maintained, creating both a comfortable, lived-in feel and an air of grandeur. With numerous seating areas, dining tables and indoor and outdoor entertaining spaces, your group can live the high life all together. 

One of our favourite spots has to be the living room in the four-bedroom home, with its exposed stone walls, beamed ceiling and huge fireplace – as well as panoramic views across the green valley. Plenty of character can be found upstairs, too, with dramatic vaulted ceilings and pretty bedrooms. Meanwhile, the larger of the two main homes has been converted more recently and has a more modern feel – and sits within a private walled garden.

It's perfectly possible to choose just one of the main homes if you're travelling as a smaller group, and there's an almost endless list of luxury add-ons if you're keen to take the work out of your stay – from private chefs and waitress service to daily breakfast and cleaning. And don't miss the chance to arrange boat hire on the nearby river for a day out to really remember.

With wood-beamed ceilings and exposed stone walls, this home is the epitome of country chic – especially when you consider its contemporary furnishings. The owners have balanced out the rustic decor with sleek lighting, modern wall art and an industrial-style kitchen. Here, keen cooks will find everything they need to prepare a delicious meal with fresh local produce (your host will happily help you fill the fridge). Enjoy your creation al fresco with the sounds of nature for company.

While you're in the area, why not treat yourself to a tour of local vineyards? This region is home to some of the country's finest wineries, after all. Cahors on the River Lot is just half an hour away – saunter through the manicured gardens and take home a bottle of the town's famously rich red wine.

If you do want to leave home, take the kids horseback riding or escape for some romance to a vineyard and stop in the local village on the way home. Pitch up some local truffle to enjoy with your bottle of Bergerac on the dining terrace. Don’t forget to add your very own home-grown walnuts to the spread.

A delightfully restored rectory in the Dordogne valley, this charming home provides peace and quiet for a family or group of friends wanting to slow down and switch off. Surrounded by manicured lawns that are perfect for picnics, you’ll spend mornings on the wraparound terrace listening to the birds sing in the fresh countryside air. When the temperature starts to rise, cool off with a dip in the inviting pool before heading inside to put together a tasty lunch for your loved ones. 

We loved the rustic interiors; exposed stone walls, terracotta-tiled floors and timber beams infuse an organic warmth throughout. Steal a moment for yourself in the cosy living space before retreating to the main bedroom for an afternoon snooze beneath double-height ceilings. If exploring is on the agenda, jump in the car and visit the nearby towns and villages – we were particularly fond of Gourdon, a twenty-minute drive away, as well as the craggy limestone plateaus of Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park, reached in no more than thirty minutes.

Situated in the Lot department, just south of the Dordogne River, this cosy 18th-century home is a wonderful place from which to explore the enchanting Occitanie region. 

Inside, original timber beams and stone walls have been lovingly restored to create a warm and inviting ambience. We loved the convivial living space with its squashy sofa and fully-equipped kitchen – ideal for those who like to flex their culinary muscles. When you’re not playing board games at the dining table, you’ll be out on the terrace, sipping a café au lait and watching the day pass by. 

Spend afternoons playing badminton before cooling off with a swim in the private pool. Later on, take the bicycles out for a spin through the surrounding countryside or why not jump in the car and explore the quaint medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda – it’s only a thirty-minute drive away. 

Clementine Cottage

The organic beauty of the Périgord region features unspoiled lands full of flora, fauna, and elegant chateaus. And its most well-known, the 13th-century Château de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, is only a six-minute drive from this hilltop retreat. But don’t forget your easel and palette, as you’ll quickly understand why this artist’s family home is the ultimate spot for inspiration.

Two words – mesmerising views. While the lifestyle on the ground involves truffles and Bergerac wine as much as hiking boots and canoes, this home elevates you to another level. On the platformed terrace with stilts built into the slope, pop champagne to say cheers to the start of the holiday. Leave the bottle in the pool house fridge and stroll along the gardens, where you’ll pass incredible valley vistas by your heated pool. The kids can run wild in the play area while you head in to admire the interiors.

Two more words – rural opulence. There’s an old-world, country feel with chunky timber beams, antique furniture, and an array of regal patterns and colours. From the sumptuous curtains to the soft rugs, we love the warmth created by this rich colour scheme, with extra heat coming from the fireplace. Is it time to open the red yet?


The Easel

This home caught our eye for its peaceful location, tucked away in the Lot countryside, yet only a five minute drive from the town of Floressas. Thanks to the property’s hillside position, you’ll be treated to vast views of the surrounding fields and woodlands. With an east-facing balcony for breakfast, a covered terrace for shade during the afternoon, and an alfresco dining table for evening meals, you can spend all day enjoying the outdoor space. And while the rustic decor inside may not be to everyone’s taste, it certainly gives the home plenty of character.

A Lovely Place to Be

Few things sounds more romantic than a cottage situated in the middle of wine country, where the endless vineyards sprawl and birds chirp. Perfect for a long-awaited holiday away from the kids or a getaway for a budding romance, the home is small but its surroundings are vast and baby-blue French shutters are ever-so charming. Escape right out to the private gardens from the pastel bedroom. After days lounging by the pool or drifting in the nearby river, take the bikes to one of two nearby towns to explore gothic churches and to pick up local delicacies like fresh truffles and a bottle (or two) of wine for enjoyment on the stone terrace. Intimacy is the emphasis here, and we can guarantee this home as a perfect start to a French-inspired love story.

From its secluded hillside position in Gascony, this restored farmhouse offers idyllic views, a peaceful garden and the perfect setting for a restorative retreat. Guests can enjoy elegant rooms and exceptional design along with a pool, sauna and yoga studio – private classes can be arranged upon request. It’s also family-friendly with a children’s room and plenty to explore in the surroundings. Follow trails through the estate woodland, fields and vineyards, or visit the region's most beautiful spots – it's just 8 kilometres to the nearby village of Condom. 

The Peace Keeper

Soak up the rustic charm of this beautiful home, filled with character and all the luxuries you might want from a stay in France. Go for a float in the private pool or get some remote work done at the dedicated desk. Who says you can't be productive on holiday? The garden is perfect for sitting out under the trees with a drink, and the terrace is perfect for alfresco dining. Get a good night's sleep in the round bed upstairs, and relax in one of many shaded and sun-kissed spots outside.

Enjoy picnics by the banks of the Dordogne and strolls through the markets of Périgord. If you're looking for somewhere to eat, there are plenty of options a short drive away, whatever you're craving. Enjoy hours of exploration whether you're a hiker, a cyclist, or even a sailor. In the summer months, rent a kayak or canoe and traverse the Dordogne river. In the evening, the plush sofas of the two living areas make for cosy places to gather and discuss a busy day.

Doze in the sunshine and let the scent of peonies, magnolias and roses drift over you on a gentle breeze. This idyllic Dordogne home is a haven, set in a valley of rolling countryside. When you’re not stretched out on a sun lounger, you’ll be swimming laps in the solar-heated salt-water pool, and listening to the fountain trickle softly in the background. Tuck into alfresco feasts on the terrace – there’s a barbecue and pizza oven to make cooking as easy as can be. When the sun has set, settle around the fire pit with a bottle of local wine, and sit out late spotting constellations in the clear sky above. 

The house itself is wonderful. The contemporary living space is the heart of the home, with high ceilings and plenty of light. There’s enough room for everyone to gather together here, though there are also peaceful corners for those quieter moments – we love the reading nook. 

In addition to its wonderful charm and beauty, this home is in an excellent location. Hop on bikes to cycle into the village for a coffee and a bite to eat in a cafe-bar, or to shop locally. The Friday morning market in nearby Ribérac is one of the best in the area – head there to pick up local produce for dinner. Aubeterre-sur-Donne, one of France’s prettiest villages, is just a short drive away. There’s so much to see and do here, you’ll want to return time and again.

With a private heated swimming pool, outdoor dining area, patio lounge and a games room – it offers luxury home amenities in a humble environment. Perfect for a large family or group of friends, the grounds are huge and surrounded by nature, with grassy areas and ample space and shade for children to run and play. If you're staying here during the colder months, a cosy aesthetic can be found inside where the log burner fireplace offers a tasteful finishing touch.

Nestled away deep within vineyard country between the Garonne and Dordogne, Monségur is a quintessential bastide town full of medieval architecture and this impressive home is a suitably characterful place to stay if you're planning a visit.

It's a more recent addition to the locale than many of the nearby buildings, but there are still a few centuries of heritage in the walls and this sense of history has been expertly retained during a recent renovation, which prioritised traditional methods and materials. Take a wander throughout the ground floor and you'll spot antique furnishings, period features and elegant decorations evocative of years gone by. At the same time, guests are also treated to all of the amenities to be expected in the 21st century – we're talking sleek kitchens and bathrooms, plus plenty of tech and gizmos.

We've been saving the best until last, however. Out in the enclosed garden, it's pretty clear to see where long summer afternoons will be spent – flitting between the cooling waters of the swimming pool and the surrounding loungers. Of course, if the weather's on your side during your stay, there are plenty of wineries, abbeys and walking routes to explore in the surrounding Entre-Deux-Mers region, as well. The city of Bordeaux only takes an hour to reach by car, too.
