That's not to say that it's old fashioned; the wellness centre (which includes a gym and yoga deck), sound system in the grand library, and air conditioning in each bedroom adds a modern touch. There are 32 hectares of grounds to explore, which include ancient woodland, valleys and even the ruins of a 12th Century church. All this, and the nearest village is only fifteen minutes away on foot.

This beautifully renovated sixteenth century farmhouse with sweeping grounds is perfectly suited to a large family or group. Children will love the play room and football goals in the garden, and a couple of the bedrooms are especially designed for kids. The heated salt-water swimming pool really makes this home stand out for us, as does the air-conditioned barn – available for an additional fee – complete with a range of fitness equipment and pool table. Be aware however, that four of the bedrooms and three of the bathrooms are in annexes separate from the main house.

You can tell a lot of thought has gone into making this home kid friendly - the billiards room, toys and games are bound to keep little ones entertained for hours on end. But there’s plenty to keep adults happy, too. We’re particular fans of the charming wine cellar and the two rustic dining rooms that combine to make entertaining in this home a pleasure.

You'll be touching centuries of history as you brush past stone walls and walk spiral staircases. Imagine rolling out of a four-poster bed and admiring the valley views from a former lookout, then curling up in the lounge to learn some French phrases.

Sip cafe au lait before hopping in the plunge pool on summer days. To forget all about your medieval surroundings, rustle up a barbecue dinner and take photos beneath the wisteria. Alternatively, why not hire a private chef to cook a feast fit for a king? In the atmospheric dining room, you'll saunter atop chestnut floors and break bread with your loved ones beside a grand fireplace.

Furthermore, this superb home sits within driving distance of several landmarks, including the Château de Beynac – an old stronghold of Richard the Lionheart. A delightfully restored rectory in the Dordogne valley, this charming home provides peace and quiet for a family or group of friends wanting to slow down and switch off. Surrounded by manicured lawns that are perfect for picnics, you’ll spend mornings on the wraparound terrace listening to the birds sing in the fresh countryside air. When the temperature starts to rise, cool off with a dip in the inviting pool before heading inside to put together a tasty lunch for your loved ones. 

We loved the rustic interiors; exposed stone walls, terracotta-tiled floors and timber beams infuse an organic warmth throughout. Steal a moment for yourself in the cosy living space before retreating to the main bedroom for an afternoon snooze beneath double-height ceilings. If exploring is on the agenda, jump in the car and visit the nearby towns and villages – we were particularly fond of Gourdon, a twenty-minute drive away, as well as the craggy limestone plateaus of Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park, reached in no more than thirty minutes.

Perhaps unsurprisingly for a chateau that dates back to the 16th century, there's a real air of grandeur at this address. Perhaps the best example of this can be seen in the dining room, which has parquet flooring, wood-panelled walls and a truly monumental 17th-century fireplace. The Beupoil family wallpaper in the living room wouldn't be of place in a museum, while the mosaic-tiled bathrooms are fit for a Roman Emporer, too.

The home's forty acres of private grounds are just as impressive as the lavish interior. Not only are there wonderful views of the Isle River Valley and the woods of Antoniac, but there's also a private swimming pool from which you can admire this rustic vista. Add to that an outdoor games area with tables for ping-pong and pool, plus a barbecue, and you've got everything you need for a stretch of alfresco living.

In the local area, the edge of Parc Naturel Régional Périgord-Limousin takes a quarter of an hour to reach in the car and offers no shortage of beautiful French countryside to wander through. The town of Perigueux is a five-minute drive away too and rewards visitors with a collection of fantastic restaurants, plus a twice-weekly outdoor market.

Situated in the Lot department, just south of the Dordogne River, this cosy 18th-century home is a wonderful place from which to explore the enchanting Occitanie region. 

Inside, original timber beams and stone walls have been lovingly restored to create a warm and inviting ambience. We loved the convivial living space with its squashy sofa and fully-equipped kitchen – ideal for those who like to flex their culinary muscles. When you’re not playing board games at the dining table, you’ll be out on the terrace, sipping a café au lait and watching the day pass by. 

Spend afternoons playing badminton before cooling off with a swim in the private pool. Later on, take the bicycles out for a spin through the surrounding countryside or why not jump in the car and explore the quaint medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda – it’s only a thirty-minute drive away.

This fully restored castle in the Dordogne manages to merge the modern with the ancient. The stone foundations may date back as early as the 5th-century, but the interior is dotted with modern art and all the little luxuries of modern life. There's over 15 hectares of land to explore, with a swimming pool, terraces, and a barbecue area for al fresco dining. The castle backs on to the vineyards of Bergerac, so you're never too far from a glass of locally produced wine. Should the weather turn, the games room with a billiards table and library with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves provide quality indoor entertainment.

Simply mentioning Malbec from the ancient family-run vineyards of Cahors can soften the pickiest wine connoisseur. Premier Cru sits by its own such vineyard and has produced some award-winning Malbec over the years. Hosted by a jewellery mogul, the gorgeous refurbished cottage is an architectural gem by itself but that's just the starting point. Cycle by the Lot river to ancient UNESCO world heritage sites and summer music festivals, or swing by the artisan bakeries and Sunday markets. Beauty is everywhere you turn.

Surrounded by countryside in southwest France, this villa is a place for switching off and spending quality time with your loved ones. In the garden, a terrace wraps around two sides of the house, providing plenty of space to dine or unwind while the little (and big) kids splash about in the pool or enjoy a game of table tennis. The place boasts period furnishings, as well as a few modern luxuries – there’s a heated swimming pool, a cinema room, and a gym. When it comes to sleeping arrangements, the home is split into six separate suites – handy for families travelling together. After exploring the private grounds, why not go further afield? Nip across to the village of Penne-d'Agenais or hike over to the small fortified town of Pujols.

This chateau was in the same family from the 17th century to 1980 and then acquired by the current host in the last 12 months. A stay here will quickly reveal why they are probably so reluctant to let it slip out of their grasp.

The perks start before you even reach the home itself. Fifteen acres of well-kempt grounds feature everything from a wildflower meadow and orchards to a private lake surrounded by woodland paths. A little closer to the property, there's a swimming pool to cool off during the summer months, an outdoor kitchen with a firepit, plus alfresco tables on the terrace with scenic views of the local valley.

Behind the home's front door, guests are treated to three floors of lavish living space with a wealth of antique furnishings, grand chandeliers and cosy fireplaces. However, despite this historic appearance, a recent renovation has brought the chateau up to 21st-century standards, including an updated kitchen. There are also a lot of games and activities to keep youngsters entertained, from the slate-based pool table to a cinema room.

Travelling in a larger group? The grange is available upon request for a fee and can accommodate an additional four guests, bringing the total occupancy up to eighteen.

While there's certainly a sense of seclusion at the address, the market town of Thivers is only one kilometre away when you need shops or restaurants. Throughout the surrounding area, it's possible to fill days with visits to castles, wine tastings or outdoor activities. 

It Runs in the Family

This fully renovated, seventeenth-century presbytery honours its history without compensating on comfort. Original features – oak beams, stone walls and a beautiful original stone fireplace – are coupled with touches of modern luxury – a heated saltwater swimming pool and en-suite bathrooms for every bedroom – which creates a feeling of homely grandeur. A highlight is an on-site church which has been fully converted into a multi-functional hosting space, complete with hi-tech sound system and capacity for 30 seated guests. Nestled in the hills above the Dordogne river, there are walks and views aplenty at your doorstep.

A honey-coloured stone house in a dreamy riverside location in the Dordogne… Do French getaways get any better than this?

This beautiful house has been a family home for four generations, and you can feel the love that’s been poured into it. The decor is simple and bright so as not to take away attention from the traditional features like exposed stone walls. Wide windows look out onto the river, which is flanked by lush greenery and flowers. 

Wake to the bells of the small church opposite, and take breakfast on the terrace. There’s a romantic feel to this part of the world, particularly in the early morning when the haze still clings to the river. Sip your coffee and breathe in the tranquillity of the region. 

The house is only a six-minute drive from Limeuil, where the Vézère meets the Dordogne. The Panoramic Gardens have the most stunning views – after you’ve drunk in the vista, head to a bistro or cafe nearby. You might also like to paddle along the river, pulling into river beaches to soak up the sunshine – we like to set off from Le Buisson, which is eight minutes away by car. You’re in a great location for day trips of all kinds, whether you want to meander along the narrow medieval streets of Sarlat – forty-three minutes away – or sip local wine at Château de Monbazillac, which takes forty-four minutes in the car. 

Make sure to call in at the local food markets to sample the best produce in the area. After a day out seeing the sights, why not settle in for a family barbecue on the terrace? Splash around in the pool while the barbecue is heating up, and spend your evening under the stars.

Charmingly rustic and idyllically rural, this 14th-century mansion is ideal for a family looking for a slightly different countryside escape. History lives on within this property, which harks back to simpler times. Besides the bathroom and second kitchen, the interior has not been modernised. It contains original stone walls, exposed beams and antique furnishings. Dine on plushly lined chairs beneath a dramatic chandelier and explore the characterfully-left old-fashioned kitchen cut from stone. This home, with its secret corners and stairways, will delight curious children who want to explore. Once they’ve found every unique treasure (including an antique sewing machine), they can head out into the verdant countryside. The garden is extensive and even houses a swimming pool overlooking a wildflower meadow. As this château is close to a working dairy farm, you can even spot cattle grazing in the pastures.

And parents can rest easy knowing the grounds are walled, so children can explore safely. We especially love the life-size chess set and large aquamarine pool on the adjoining grounds. The friendly owner lives next door to this home and is an excellent chef, so sit back and relax as you dine on an al-fresco French feast with the region’s famous truffles and wine from the local vineyards.
