Having said that, there's more riding in the home's favour than its prime position on the map. The design is sleek and contemporary, with a preference for walls painted in muted grey, sleek surfaces and white furnishings. The bedrooms might lie on the smaller side, but the open and light-filled communal space more than makes up for it – if not, the private balcony should act as a sweetener.

This beautiful, thatched 19th-century cottage is as pretty as a picture. We love the gorgeous panoramic views of the river, sea, and the port from the south-facing terrace and garden. It's the perfect spot to watch the boats go by while tucking into some seafood washed down with a glass of local cider.

The interiors are just as charming as the exterior, with exposed stone walls, terracotta floors, vases of hydrangea and whitewashed beamed ceilings decorated with oars and fishing lines. Gather around the hearth with its deer antlers and wood burner when the Brittany weather turns chilly. There are more of those lovely river vistas from inside too. This place is a great retreat for family or friends all year round.

There's plenty to explore out and about – it's less than a minute's walk to the river, while Névez is just 4 kilometres away. The Port de Kerdruc is 270 metres, and there's a sailing school 5.7 kilometres, or if you fancy a day at the beach, Plage de Port Manec'h is just under 6 kilometres from this enchanting home.

Sitting not too far from the shores of the geographically peculiar Gulf of Morbihan, this home strikes the perfect balance between being surrounded by a wealth of attractions while also being a pleasant address in and of itself which you'll be more than content to pass many an hour.

Those with an eye for detail might notice a discrepancy between the rustic stone exterior and the contemporary design inside, and they would be correct in guessing that it's received a lot of attention recently. There's nothing showy or over-the-top about the furnishings and finishes – just a pleasing combination of white walls, wooden floors and a gloriously sleek kitchen. That's not to say every inch of heritage has been ripped out, however – the period fireplace is still just as cosy to gather besides, for instance.

When the sun makes an appearance, there's space to sit out and soak up the rays on the terrace and adjoining lawn, but there are also plenty of beaches to discover nearby, including the closest just 200 metres away. In local Arradon, there are a smattering of bars and restaurants with which to get acquainted, but you'll find a larger array in the larger town of Vannes, just a short drive away.

It has more megalithic sites than you can shake a stick at – around 3000 standing stones to be exact, giving it the world's greatest concentration. If that's not your thing, head to the Carnac Spa for all sorts of thalassotherapy treatments. Of course, there's also a wide choice of seafood restaurants and boutiques to choose from right on your doorstep. You don't have to go anywhere to enjoy the seascape though. Just take a seat on your south-facing balcony and enjoy the vista opening up to the sea. We can easily see why Layers Upon Layers was chosen as one of the best homes for breaks in France in 2016 — it's typical French countryside home with oodles of charm and plenty of amenities that will help you make lifelong memories. The interior has been furnished with gorgeous furniture that give it a rather retro-rustic atmosphere, and the host is keen on restoring period features, so that you can immerse yourself into the spirit of rural France. Meneac is far from a ghost town even outside of the tourist season, making it a great destination year-round, but there are plenty of interesting villages and castles to explore in the area. When you've had your fill of sights for the day, return to your holiday residence and try out a new recipe, or get the charcoal barbecue going in the garden. After a nice meal, treat yourself to some local wine and organise a movie night with the help of the big flat-screen TV that's equipped with Freeview.

Sitting within a 100-hectare estate that dates back to the 18th century, this marvellous home was once the residence of an important general during conflicts following the French Revolution. Given this impressive heritage, it's perhaps no surprise to learn that the interior still retains a sense of grandeur. However, don't confuse this with dusty and staid – as the locals might say, there's a joie de vivre to be discovered at the address.

Much of this is down to the interior design, which mixes together antique furnishings, bold print wallpaper and portraits hanging in every room. We love the lavish dining table set under a chandelier, but also appreciate the modern additions as well – we're fairly sure the aforementioned general didn't have the games room to keep him occupied while he was holed up here, but we're willing to stand corrected.

It's a similar story outside. The well-kempt gardens and rosebeds make for a charming backdrop as you stroll about the grounds, but you're also more than welcome to take a dip in the swimming pool or play a match or two of tennis on the private court. There's equipment for badminton or volleyball too if they're more your sport.

There's a lot to discover in the surrounding Vendée, as well. The sweeping beaches on the Pays de la Loire coastline start from as close as 30km away, while galleries and restaurants in the vibrant city of Nantes lie 43km to the north. A little closer to home, the nearest village is 2.5km away and has a pair of bakeries, a supermarket and a restaurant to tide you over.

Break into a fresh baguette with a few slices of Saint-Paulin cheese (a Breton favourite) and olive oil as you plan the afternoon ahead. If you’ve eaten too much for watersports and swimming on the beach, take a seven-minute drive to the Carnac Stones – these granite megaliths date as far back as 4500 BC.

The flickering candles, lush fabrics and antique furnishings that fill these painstakingly restored whitewashed walls give the impression that you’ve stepped back in time, to a simpler and more beautiful era. Not that you have to sacrifice the mod cons, that is, with an en-suite for each room and a heated swimming pool right outside. And there are no shortage of quirks to investigate, whether you’re playing table football in the bedroom or exploring the grounds.
