Those with an eye for detail might notice a discrepancy between the rustic stone exterior and the contemporary design inside, and they would be correct in guessing that it's received a lot of attention recently. There's nothing showy or over-the-top about the furnishings and finishes – just a pleasing combination of white walls, wooden floors and a gloriously sleek kitchen. That's not to say every inch of heritage has been ripped out, however – the period fireplace is still just as cosy to gather besides, for instance.

Meneac is far from a ghost town even outside of the tourist season, making it a great destination year-round, but there are plenty of interesting villages and castles to explore in the area. There's one main reason that people flock to the town of Damgan and that's the long stretches of idyllic beaches that dominate the coastline in this corner of Brittany. With this in mind, you can see why we're so smitten with this apartment that's only 80 metres from the seaside.

Having said that, there's more riding in the home's favour than its prime position on the map. The design is sleek and contemporary, with a preference for walls painted in muted grey, sleek surfaces and white furnishings. The bedrooms might lie on the smaller side, but the open and light-filled communal space more than makes up for it – if not, the private balcony should act as a sweetener.

You might shop at the weekly local market for fresh ingredients, and whip up Breton pancakes or pork rillettes. 

Outside, the enclosed garden is delightful in the afternoon. Soak up the sunshine on a sun lounger, or gather around the table for snacks and a chilled glass of wine. The south-facing terrace is perfect in the early evening, when the sun is starting to dip in the sky. 

It takes just fifteen minutes by car to reach some of Brittany’s nicest beaches – pack a picnic and make a day of it.
