“It was the most magical place we had ever been”, say the current owners about their first trip to La Belle d'Ardèche, and we have to agree with them. The chateau has been standing since 1175, and these walls have some stories to tell — tales of buried treasure, revolutions, and artistic genius. As soon as you enter this beautifully restored home, you’ll be swept up in the enchanting interiors of virgin blue and naked stone, surrounded by ivy-strewn gardens and a private pool. Open the French windows onto the gorgeous grassy garden, where you'll also find a sunny terrace - perfect for lazy afternoons with a glass of local wine in hand. Wander around the wooded grounds, reconnecting with nature as you go. The local neighbourhood is an equally dreamy setting where you'll find only three local people living there all year round. 

It doesn't get much more rural than that. Nearby, you'll find the towns of Sennecey le Grand, 5 kilometres to the north, and Tournus, 7 kilometres to the south. In each of these local towns, there are shops and restaurants to pick all you need. This enormous chateau in the Burgundy countryside has quite a fascinating backstory. It was built in 1900 and gifted to a French actress by her lover before it was sold to the Red Cross and used as a war hospital. Today, it's the spot for a rather sumptuous getaway.

The interior is full of grand features, from the long dining table in the orangery and high-ceilinged living room to the library and impressive hallway. You might also notice some more recent additions, such as the home cinema set-up and spa-worthy bathrooms.

Outside, too, has some rather inviting features, chief among them the heated swimming pool surrounded by loungers. When you're finished taking a dip, there's plenty more to discover in the four acres of grounds, including a fishing pond and a shared tennis and basketball court.

However you choose to fill your days, the chateau's rural location will ensure you can do it in the utmost tranquillity. There are lots of walking routes that start nearby and Morvan National Park lies under half an hour's drive away. The town of Epinac only takes ten minutes in the car to reach and offers a restaurant, bakery, grocery and butchers.

This is a luxurious 19th-century castle located in the heart of Burgundy, surrounded by vineyards and wineries. The Green Mansions

Set in 32 acres of scenic landscaped gardens and parkland, you'll find this magnificent castle nestled in the picturesque Loire and Berry regions (around two and a half hours away from Paris). Built in 1835 on the site where there used to be a Benedictine monastery and an original orchard, the property is packed with history and old-world French charm. 

From the jam-packed home library to the rustic French kitchen setting and the opulent bedroom suites dressed in modern furnishings that nod to the chateau's original personality – enjoy a taste of traditional France when staying here. And not just in the aesthetic sense, as the kitchen space offers the perfect set-up to rustle up some local French culinary delights for yourself, or why not hire a private chef to do so for you? 

Amid the vast gardens, you'll find a heated swimming pool and enormous open space for garden games such as boules, lounging in the sun and enjoying family picnics on the lawns. And with bicycles provided by the host, you'll be able to explore the grounds and beyond on two wheels too. 

In fact, why not cycle down to the local village of Nérondes? Only one kilometre away, here you'll find the bakery to pick up fresh bread and pastries in the morning and the supermarket for anything else – you'll have convenience at your fingertips despite the chateau's countryside location. Not to mention the many farmer's markets and neighbouring towns and villages – easily reachable by car. Rich in culture and majestic scenery, you'll be just a thirty-minute drive from the cathedral city of Bourges and even closer to the wine-growing region of Sancerre with its beautiful hilltop village, which is also well worth a visit. 



Monastery Magic 

A delightfully restored rectory in the Dordogne valley, this charming home provides peace and quiet for a family or group of friends wanting to slow down and switch off. Surrounded by manicured lawns that are perfect for picnics, you’ll spend mornings on the wraparound terrace listening to the birds sing in the fresh countryside air. When the temperature starts to rise, cool off with a dip in the inviting pool before heading inside to put together a tasty lunch for your loved ones. 

We loved the rustic interiors; exposed stone walls, terracotta-tiled floors and timber beams infuse an organic warmth throughout. Steal a moment for yourself in the cosy living space before retreating to the main bedroom for an afternoon snooze beneath double-height ceilings. If exploring is on the agenda, jump in the car and visit the nearby towns and villages – we were particularly fond of Gourdon, a twenty-minute drive away, as well as the craggy limestone plateaus of Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park, reached in no more than thirty minutes.

Situated in the Lot department, just south of the Dordogne River, this cosy 18th-century home is a wonderful place from which to explore the enchanting Occitanie region. 

Inside, original timber beams and stone walls have been lovingly restored to create a warm and inviting ambience. We loved the convivial living space with its squashy sofa and fully-equipped kitchen – ideal for those who like to flex their culinary muscles. When you’re not playing board games at the dining table, you’ll be out on the terrace, sipping a café au lait and watching the day pass by. 

Spend afternoons playing badminton before cooling off with a swim in the private pool. Later on, take the bicycles out for a spin through the surrounding countryside or why not jump in the car and explore the quaint medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda – it’s only a thirty-minute drive away.

We love how the building’s history has been incorporated into its up-to-date design, with exposed brick walls, beamed ceilings and tiled floors lending a rustic yet elegant atelier feel to the proceedings. Huge windows allow plenty of light to pour in and bounce around the open-plan living area with its double-height ceilings, creating a bright and sociable space you’ll relish relaxing in. Make yourself at home on the plump sofa with a glass of wine or gather around the dining table for a French feast when you’re not out sampling the local restaurants. The three bedrooms, meanwhile, are pared-back spaces curated with rest and relaxation in mind, and we’re particularly fond of the main bedroom with its glass walls looking out over the living area below. With a desk space on hand too should you need to catch up on work, you’re all set for a carefree time whether you’re visiting for business or pleasure. 

Outside of your home, Croix-Rousse’s maze of leafy squares waits to be discovered, as does the area’s history of silk weaving best seen at the Mur des Canuts and the Maison des Canuts museum. Fresh produce is sold at the daily market on Boulevard de la Croix Rousse, and you’ll find trendy crowds delighting in gourmet patisseries, hip wine bars and art galleries all around your neighbourhood too.

The old building has been converted into a contemporary design dream, giving the place an industrial-chic vibe that suits a modern preference. While it is aesthetically pleasing, it's still very liveable with each bedroom boasting a queen size bed, a sociable living space, and a huge kitchen, perfect for whipping up group meals and sharing a bottle of wine.

When it's time to head out, exploring Lyon comes easy here. In the 1st Arrondissement, close to the prestigious Lyon Museum of Fine Arts, you're in one of the liveliest parts of the city. Reaching the rest of the city is a breeze – you're just 100 metres away from the Hôtel de Ville metro stop. Come the evening, group dinners and drinks are perfectly enjoyable in your apartment, or you can head out to discover the famous gastronomical scene of Lyon. Blue may be the colour but it certainly doesn't describe the feeling in this cheerful little home in Lyon's 7th arrondissement. An intimate space for a couple or a solo traveller, it's set in a typical period building with rooftop views all the way to some of the city's most iconic sights. It's not huge, but it's a well-designed home with character and charm. We love the typical French Juliet balconies to either side of the living room and in the bedroom – perfect for opening the whole place up for some fresh air in the summer. There are some quirky touches in the bedroom, with green palm trees breaking up the blue. And the bathroom (you guessed, it's blue) is modern and luxurious. Step outside and you're right in the city's most commercial district, with bars, shops and restaurants all around. Particularly well-placed if you feel like exploring by bike, it's close to the Rhône and its quays.
