This enormous chateau in the Burgundy countryside has quite a fascinating backstory. It was built in 1900 and gifted to a French actress by her lover before it was sold to the Red Cross and used as a war hospital. Today, it's the spot for a rather sumptuous getaway.

The interior is full of grand features, from the long dining table in the orangery and high-ceilinged living room to the library and impressive hallway. You might also notice some more recent additions, such as the home cinema set-up and spa-worthy bathrooms.

Outside, too, has some rather inviting features, chief among them the heated swimming pool surrounded by loungers. When you're finished taking a dip, there's plenty more to discover in the four acres of grounds, including a fishing pond and a shared tennis and basketball court.

However you choose to fill your days, the chateau's rural location will ensure you can do it in the utmost tranquillity. There are lots of walking routes that start nearby and Morvan National Park lies under half an hour's drive away. The town of Epinac only takes ten minutes in the car to reach and offers a restaurant, bakery, grocery and butchers.

Wander around the wooded grounds, reconnecting with nature as you go. The local neighbourhood is an equally dreamy setting where you'll find only three local people living there all year round. 

It doesn't get much more rural than that. Nearby, you'll find the towns of Sennecey le Grand, 5 kilometres to the north, and Tournus, 7 kilometres to the south. In each of these local towns, there are shops and restaurants to pick all you need. Don't miss the rolling local vineyards where the winegrowers welcome you to tour the vines and sample the wines.

It’s located in Jaujac, a medieval village packed with character, and set on an extinct volcano. You’re also within easy reach of the stunning Monts d'Ardèche when you want to be immersed in nature.

The home itself is packed with characterful charm, too – we adore the wooden beam ceilings and exposed brickwork that make it feel like a classic French countryside cottage. The wood burner fireplace invites you to sit with a mug of hot chocolate on cold winter evenings, while the private outdoor pool is a great place to cool off during summertime stays. We also love the covered terrace, featuring a dining area where you can feast on local cuisine while watching the sunset.

A delightfully restored rectory in the Dordogne valley, this charming home provides peace and quiet for a family or group of friends wanting to slow down and switch off. Surrounded by manicured lawns that are perfect for picnics, you’ll spend mornings on the wraparound terrace listening to the birds sing in the fresh countryside air. When the temperature starts to rise, cool off with a dip in the inviting pool before heading inside to put together a tasty lunch for your loved ones. 

We loved the rustic interiors; exposed stone walls, terracotta-tiled floors and timber beams infuse an organic warmth throughout. Steal a moment for yourself in the cosy living space before retreating to the main bedroom for an afternoon snooze beneath double-height ceilings. If exploring is on the agenda, jump in the car and visit the nearby towns and villages – we were particularly fond of Gourdon, a twenty-minute drive away, as well as the craggy limestone plateaus of Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park, reached in no more than thirty minutes.

Le Presbytère

Set in 32 acres of scenic landscaped gardens and parkland, you'll find this magnificent castle nestled in the picturesque Loire and Berry regions (around two and a half hours away from Paris). Built in 1835 on the site where there used to be a Benedictine monastery and an original orchard, the property is packed with history and old-world French charm. 

From the jam-packed home library to the rustic French kitchen setting and the opulent bedroom suites dressed in modern furnishings that nod to the chateau's original personality – enjoy a taste of traditional France when staying here. Inside, original timber beams and stone walls have been lovingly restored to create a warm and inviting ambience. We loved the convivial living space with its squashy sofa and fully-equipped kitchen – ideal for those who like to flex their culinary muscles. When you’re not playing board games at the dining table, you’ll be out on the terrace, sipping a café au lait and watching the day pass by. 

Spend afternoons playing badminton before cooling off with a swim in the private pool. Later on, take the bicycles out for a spin through the surrounding countryside or why not jump in the car and explore the quaint medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda – it’s only a thirty-minute drive away. 

Clementine Cottage

Surrounded by greenery for as far as the eye can see, this traditional hideaway in Limousin offers space and peaceful seclusion like no other. If ever there was a lesson in effortless French country living, this is it. From the cobalt blue shutters that adorn the home’s exterior to the warm, rustic interiors, there are individual touches adding unique style everywhere. We particularly love the textiles and character found in the bedrooms – the antique beds are just perfect. But the true beauty of this property is only really apparent when you pad across the cool floors and out on the south-facing terrace. The charming pool and lawn area are built for relaxation. Blue may be the colour but it certainly doesn't describe the feeling in this cheerful little home in Lyon's 7th arrondissement. An intimate space for a couple or a solo traveller, it's set in a typical period building with rooftop views all the way to some of the city's most iconic sights. It's not huge, but it's a well-designed home with character and charm. We love the typical French Juliet balconies to either side of the living room and in the bedroom – perfect for opening the whole place up for some fresh air in the summer. There are some quirky touches in the bedroom, with green palm trees breaking up the blue. And the bathroom (you guessed, it's blue) is modern and luxurious. Step outside and you're right in the city's most commercial district, with bars, shops and restaurants all around. Particularly well-placed if you feel like exploring by bike, it's close to the Rhône and its quays.

Just a fifteen-minute walk from Lyon Part Dieu station and its bustling shopping centre, this home's location is perfect for those seeking a spot of retail therapy. It sits in the third arrondissement, best known as the city's commercial quarter. Here, you're well-connected to explore, only seven minutes away from the closest metro stop on foot, and surrounded by an array of shops and restaurants.

Outside of your home, Croix-Rousse’s maze of leafy squares waits to be discovered, as does the area’s history of silk weaving best seen at the Mur des Canuts and the Maison des Canuts museum. Fresh produce is sold at the daily market on Boulevard de la Croix Rousse, and you’ll find trendy crowds delighting in gourmet patisseries, hip wine bars and art galleries all around your neighbourhood too.

Here you'll find yourself close to the Cours de la Liberté with its many restaurants and shops, and you'll have only to cross the Wilson bridge to be on the peninsula itself. Spend days perusing local shops, markets, museums, and galleries, before returning to the cosy comfort and effortless style of your home away from home. Freshen up in the sleek bathroom before venturing out again to make the most of Lyon's vibrant foodie scene, or prepare something homemade in that well-equipped kitchen over a glass or two of wine.
