We can't think of many things better than living right on the beachfront of the French Mediterranean coast. Sitting four floors up with a spectacular panoramic view of the breakers, this effortlessly chic, modern home adds a slice of luxury to beach holidays. But our favourite spot has be the grand, sweeping balcony that directly overlooks the beach and the vast sea. From here, gaze out towards the horizon as you sip a sundowner cocktail with your favourite people, or enjoy dinner in the lukewarm night air. The hub for beach activities is directly over the road, so whether you want to go swimming, kayaking or windsurfing in the balmy Med, you'll be in the water in minutes. If you can tear yourself away from the sandy shores, a half-hour car ride will get you to Perpignan, loved for its renowned cultural scene and wide array of restaurants and bars.

Secluded in the French countryside, this beautifully restored villa is the perfect getaway for large groups. The traditional Provencal interior brings no shortage of space and comfort and the villa stands on 650 acres of land, giving way to olive groves and fruit trees as far as the eye can see. Eight bedrooms are within the main house, and a further three are situated in the separate cottage, known as the 'Bergerie', where you'll also find a separate kitchen - great for inter-generational groups or those wanting more privacy from the main house. The kids will love the private pool, and grown-ups can take advantage of the poolhouse seating whilst supervising. Location-wise, you can venture to the coast on a day trip or visit the medieval Carcassonne, only a fifteen-minute drive away.

Not far from the Spanish border you’ll find Perpignan, a classified City of Art and History – thanks to its roots as a former Majorcan capital – and home to this eclectic apartment. It’s only fitting that the bold interior echoes elements of both Spanish and French flair as an ode to its surroundings. The result is a vibrant space that honours natural wood and rattan but also puts more opulent touches front and centre. 

Spend your time here unwinding with an early-morning coffee on the balcony or by reading on the sunny sofa. Gather around the kitchen island after lunch to pour the wine, snacking as you chat. 

When you wander out, you’ll find Spanish influences in the Cathedral of Saint-Jean-Baptiste and the majestic promenade des Platanes. Take holiday photos in front of the many ancient buildings and sit down to eat at one of the local restaurants or cafes. Head to the beach – Plage du Lido lies at the other end of a short drive, or tee off at Golf de Saint-Cyprien.

This lovely home can be found in Gruissan, a picturesque town in the south of France. If you’re hoping for white sand beaches and beautiful scenery, this is an excellent choice of location. Best of all, it’s home to this stylish abode. 

This home ticks every box when it comes to fuss-free holiday homes. It’s small but perfectly formed, with a cosy living room that’s the heart of the home. Children will love sleeping on the mezzanine level, where they can have their own space while still being close to the grown-ups. 

The outside space here is sure to win over everyone, though. You’ll have access to the shared swimming pool, which is a dream to dive into on hot, sunny days. You can sunbathe alongside the pool, dipping a toe in every now and then, or choose to soak up the sun on one of two terraces. There’s shade aplenty if you’d rather curl up with a book and a lemonade, too. 

Plage de Matteille is less than a kilometre away, where you can splash in the shallows and build sandcastles. It’s also easy to stroll to the harbour promenade – it’s a lovely way to spend an evening. Hikers will be thrilled to be within reach of the trails up Massif de la Clape, which boasts some spectacular views. There’s something for everyone here.

Sliding doors surround the living area, flooding the white- and sand-hued room with sunshine. Push the doors open to relax on the wraparound balcony – prime position goes to the sun loungers and small breakfast table, which look directly over the waves. When you get too warm, wander down to the communal pool to cool off. Interiors are simple, with earthy, neutral tones in bedrooms – think swirling terracotta browns and clay reds on walls, with unique Japanese-style beds in two of the rooms. Both of the dining tables look on to beautiful vistas, though for a sea breeze, head out to the alfresco space – perfect for cool glasses of wine and star gazing.

A modern, stylish and comfortable home in an enviable position, a little more than ten minutes walk from Les Angles' famous ski area, this place has bags of appeal. Over three floors, with its own ski storage room and views across the countryside all the way to the nearby Lac de Matemale and the mountains beyond, it's family-friendly and roomy enough for a large group.

We love the styling here, with its mix of stone floors, local timber and exposed stone. The living room has comfy sofas and a log burner to keep everyone toasty in the depth of winter, and there are a few decorative touches that may come as a quirky surprise (we love the bear in the living room and the ski mask mirror in the hall). A well-equipped, modern kitchen comes with everything you'll need and there's a dining table seating eight.

Elsewhere, bedrooms and bathrooms are all individual and smartly furnished – our favourite being the main bedroom with its partly open en-suite. And kids will no doubt love the bunk room. Close to the centre of the village, you'll be within walking distance of its shops and restaurants, with all the resort facilities at your fingertips.

Nestled in the coastal village of Calella de Palafrugell, a scenic walk from the golden sands of El Golfet beach, this villa promises an exceptional stay – especially since you'll have a House Manager and housekeeping team looking after you. Inside, the bedrooms all have their own en-suites and dressing rooms (spread over three floors), plus there's a lift down to the basement where you'll find an independent suite and a professional cinema. Yes, the cinema is impressive, but we expect you'll spend most of your time here outdoors, where there's plenty of space for swimming and soaking up the sun. In Les Gavarres Natural Park within the famous Costa Brava area of Spain, this villa dates back to the 18th century. With sprawling grounds filled with citrus orchards, vast lawns, shaded patios and a shimmering private swimming pool, it's perfect for family holidays, reunions with friends, special events or even corporate retreats. Each room is uniquely and elegantly decorated and offers stunning views of the surrounding scenery. There are several living rooms to spread out across and we particularly love the barrel-vaulted dining room big enough for groups to gather.

Vibrant Barcelona is also around a half an hour drive away and makes for an excellent day trip. You can tell a lot of thought has gone into ensuring Sunset Hideaway has a sociable vibe. You’ll find large living spaces across two floors, making this a great spot for two groups of families looking for the occasional downtime. We loved the contemporary windows that flood the interiors with natural light, providing a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living. Its stone-walled garden is in keeping with the home’s traditional charm and offers a lovely backdrop to the sunsets over the Pyrenees each night.

This incredible French home and its surroundings are a riot for the senses. See the sun set against the rolling green hills, hear the breeze through the olive trees, smell the wild lavender and thyme in the air, taste the fine wines from the vineyards nearby, and touch the antique treasures found inside. The canals of the surrounding town, known as the Venice of Spain, are one of its defining attributes, so when you’re not with the kids engaging in activities, you can head out on a nightlife scene as vibrant and luxurious as some of Europe’s other seaside destinations.

Small but mighty and offering many of the mod-cons that you could need for a quiet, restful stay in Les Angles – a picturesque part of the sweeping Pyrénées-Orientales mountain range offering walking and biking trails in the summer, and excellent skiing opportunities in winter – this compact, timber-clad holiday apartment reminds us of a cosy bird's nest tucked away in the area's hilly landscape. 

Whilst the wood-panelled double bedroom is brought to life with quirky design touches and exudes a uniquely alpine charm, the kitchen/living area provides the perfect place to join as a group and spend some quality time together. Indeed, the close quarters, unfussy interior, and lack of extravagant amenities mean that this home is all about two simple pleasures – reconnecting with loved ones and realigning yourself with nature.

Amble through the town of Les Angles, stopping for a bite in one of its authentic restaurants – which, thanks to its positioning close to the border, consists of a delicious blend of French and Spanish flavours packed into hearty fare for mountainous terrain. It’s a five-minute walk to the seafront where boats land the freshest seafood at the harbour, and a ten-minute walk sees you at the sandy stretch of beach at Platja del Rec. Outside, there are plenty of shady spots and the swimming pool provides respite on hot afternoons. When it comes to mealtimes, we recommend calling upon the help of your host to arrange for a private chef to take care of dinner. Inside, beds can be configured as doubles or twins upon request and there’s an office for anyone who’s mixing business with pleasure. Location-wise, Pals Beach is less than a twenty-five-minute drive away and the town of La Bisbal d'Empordà is reached in fifteen.

Holm Oak Harmony

Gaudi might be famous for his work in Barcelona, but that hasn't stopped this home taking inspiration from the famous Catalan architect. A 200-year-old farmhouse has been turned into a slick, white-washed hangout. Modernist influences are seen in the rounded walls, arched doorways, and buckled pillars. The living room is far out, from the white pool and foosball tables to the huge semi-circular sofa. The master suite is the most impressive, sending out spaceship vibes with its round bed, droplet shaped fireplace and spacious curved bath. But not even the slinky interiors can compete with Mother Nature, as views over the hills and out to the sea abound from every angle. The garden has been planted with bougainvillea, which showers archways and dining tables with pink blossoms when it blooms. For special occasions, head to the home's club room, complete with a DJ hut and incredible sound system. Life will feel pretty amazing floating in the infinity pool or sipping cocktails on the terrace.

Even before entering the house, we fell under the spell of its surroundings – the glistening pool, the stunning views, the huge garden, and the outdoor dining area, inviting you to plan those magical alfresco feasts that go on long into the warm, Spanish nights. You’ll enjoy absolute privacy and tranquillity here, the perfect setting to catch up on your holiday reads and relax in one of the many sun loungers dotted about. 

Come inside and be prepared for a beautiful treat – what the home’s façade promises with its old-world glamour, the interior more than delivers. We love the stone and wood details, the unique art pieces and furnishings, and the cosy, inviting ambience. There is more than enough space to snuggle up and enjoy a movie night or an afternoon of wine and conversation, with an ornamental fireplace to add to that homely feel. 

The bedrooms, situated upstairs, are another highlight: with plush, comfy beds, timelessly stylish furnishings, and beautiful wooden floors, you’re guaranteed a restful sleep. 

Whenever you feel like exploring, there is an abundance of activities to be enjoyed in the area – from cycling and horse riding, to exploring the charming town of Calonge and the stunning beaches of the Costa Brava, just five and ten minutes away by car respectively.

This lovely home in Llafranc is perfect for those looking for absolute rest and relaxation. Boasting countryside views, this home is close to the beach and the bars of the town, while being nicely removed from tourist traps. Llafranc is a quiet part of Spain on the Costa Brava, with a stunning coastline and gorgeous beaches. 

The home is bright and cheerful, with bold splashes of colour that add warmth to the neutral palette. Your eye will most often be drawn outside, through the floor-to-ceiling windows that lead onto the large terrace. Trees surround the home, making it feel nicely secluded despite being part of a resort. 

When you’re not by the shared swimming pool – which is huge and inviting – you’ll likely spend most of your time on the terrace. There are sun loungers so sun-worshippers will be content, and there’s a lovely dining area too. You might like to drive fourteen minutes to beautiful Calella de Palafrugell for lunch by the water, and then spend your evenings grilling up local seafood on the barbecue. 

The clear water and soft sand of Platja El Cau are a seven-minute walk away, so days at the beach couldn’t be easier. To really take in the glorious coastline, walk ten minutes to the viewpoint at Mirador de la Divina Pastora. It’s a wonderful spot for sunset.

Although imposing from a distance, the interior radiates comfort and homeliness to make your break as cosy as possible, but not without a little dash of pizazz. Wander across three floors to find your favourite spot in this home – we can guarantee for some it will be in the games room where you can pass hours playing billiards, whereas other may take most favourably to the minibar and dancefloor. 

As fun as it is indoors, the outdoor area has even more to offer. Splash in the pool or challenge each other to a game of tennis, but don’t forget to unwind on the sunloungers as you kick back with an ice-cold drink and good book. 

Light the barbecue for lunch and make use of the sprawling terrace to socialise with wine, nibbles and good conversation. For a bit of alone-time, you can take to one of the swing chairs to admire the view, or stretch yourself all the way out on one of the hammocks to have an afternoon nap in the shade of the trees.
