We can't think of many things better than living right on the beachfront of the French Mediterranean coast. The hub for beach activities is directly over the road, so whether you want to go swimming, kayaking or windsurfing in the balmy Med, you'll be in the water in minutes. If you can tear yourself away from the sandy shores, a half-hour car ride will get you to Perpignan, loved for its renowned cultural scene and wide array of restaurants and bars.

Standing in the heart of the Les Gavarres Natural Park, this former farmstead sits amidst oak forests and idyllic nature. Renovated using local materials, the home's rustic charm makes a fantastic backdrop to a family reunion, while the private garden offers stunning landscape views. While the pool is shared with the owners, it's still a great addition – set in the large garden and surrounded by trees, you'll feel the seclusion here. When you start to miss civilization, though, you're just 15 minutes from La Bisbal d'Empordà, a town with shops and eateries, and close to some of Costa Brava's most beautiful beaches.

The Echantillon

Sitting on a pretty Provencal hilltop, this chateau doesn't waste this prime location. Step behind the formidable stone walls – some of which date back to the 12th century – and you're greeted with expansive rooms packed full of luxurious touches.

The arched windows and glass doors at the end of the open living room are nothing but generous when it comes to natural light, making for a lovely space in which to dine or lounge. Upstairs, the bedrooms and bathrooms are similarly lavish, especially the teak-wood four-poster beds and bathtub overlooking the outdoor space.

Speaking of which, the alfresco space at the address is pretty special, too. Overlooked by 800-year-old gargoyles, there's a small swimming pool lent a little tropicality from the neighbouring palm trees. The built-in charcoal barbecue makes it easy to whip up feasts in the summer months, as well.

When it comes to getting to know this famous region a little better, the local village of Aragon can be reached easily on foot and has some renowned restaurants for you to enjoy. To help you work up an appetite, there are lots of walking routes and outdoor activities to undertake in the nearby national parks, while La Franqui beach is only 65km away, too.

Located in the district of Santa Margarita, this stylish apartment is the perfect place for family and friends to enjoy the simple pleasures of coastal living. From breakfast on the balcony to lounging by the swimming pool, it’s easy to relax and feel at home here.

Outside, it’s only a short walk to the supermarket for any supplies you might need, while the centre of Roses and its beautiful beaches are a nine–minute drive away. Families will love the nearby water park which boasts one of the biggest swimming pools in Europe – only a four–minute drive away. 

And when you’re full of warmth and fresh sea air, you’ll love coming together on the balcony to watch the sunset over the mountains.

Perfectly positioned on a hillside, a ten-minute drive from the pretty town of Begur, this villa is all about sea views and laidback living. Your days will be spent on your private terrace, soaking up every last drop of the Costa Brava sunshine. Perhaps you’ll settle into a lounger with an ice-cold beverage in hand or maybe you’ll swim gentle laps in the glittering pool. When it’s time to eat, set the table on the balcony ready for a Catalan feast whipped up in the no-frills kitchen and if you’d like a quiet moment with your holiday read, the window seat in the bright living space is an excellent spot. Stretch your legs with a twenty-five-minute walk to Sa Tuna, an idyllic cove with a sandy beach – it was our favourite spot to while away the long afternoons. Head home before dusk with a bottle of Cava and watch the sunset melt into the ocean from your enviable vantage point.

A modern, stylish and comfortable home in an enviable position, a little more than ten minutes walk from Les Angles' famous ski area, this place has bags of appeal. Over three floors, with its own ski storage room and views across the countryside all the way to the nearby Lac de Matemale and the mountains beyond, it's family-friendly and roomy enough for a large group.

We love the styling here, with its mix of stone floors, local timber and exposed stone. The living room has comfy sofas and a log burner to keep everyone toasty in the depth of winter, and there are a few decorative touches that may come as a quirky surprise (we love the bear in the living room and the ski mask mirror in the hall). A well-equipped, modern kitchen comes with everything you'll need and there's a dining table seating eight.

Elsewhere, bedrooms and bathrooms are all individual and smartly furnished – our favourite being the main bedroom with its partly open en-suite. And kids will no doubt love the bunk room. Close to the centre of the village, you'll be within walking distance of its shops and restaurants, with all the resort facilities at your fingertips.

This idyllic spot is great for weddings and big family holidays alike, and while the traditional decor won't be for everyone, there's plenty of space for relaxation and entertainment both inside and out. And when you’re ready to explore, the historic town of Torroella de Montgri, with its narrow streets and impressive castle, and the former fishing village of L’Escala, famous for its anchovies, are just a short drive away.

Dinner can be taken on the terrace at the table for eight, and glass fold-away doors blend the dining terrace with the open-plan living room. Rattan furnishings and driftwood touches bring the beachy vibe inside and pristine white walls are livened up with sea-glass bottles and rare seashells. It’s a five-minute walk to the seafront where boats land the freshest seafood at the harbour, and a ten-minute walk sees you at the sandy stretch of beach at Platja del Rec. Explore the town on foot and dine on the catch of the day, or stock up on fresh fish and sun-ripened fruit and veg and cook in the vintage-chic kitchen back home.

This eye-catching villa has bagged a great spot on a stretch of coastline designated an area of outstanding natural beauty, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Cleverly designed over three floors to merge into the hillside, the home boasts sea views from inside and out. Lazy days can be spent admiring the vistas from the private pool and terraces and when you’re ready to head out, you’ll find a sandy beach and choice of restaurants in Tamariu, just a five-minute drive away.

Situated in the charming Catalan village of Sant Mori, this elegant apartment is perfect for a small family or for couples visiting this picturesque area. You’ll be within walking distance of the town’s shops and restaurants, with plenty of outdoor activities to be enjoyed too. Although there’s enough bed space for five, we think the home is best suited for four adults and a child.

Located in the heart of charming Begur, this stylish Spanish villa offers the perfect sanctuary within Costa Brava’s bustling town. Ideally placed for strolling into town for delicious lunches and designer shopping, you’ll quickly slip into the laid-back local lifestyle here. Vibrant Barcelona is also around a half an hour drive away and makes for an excellent day trip. You can tell a lot of thought has gone into ensuring Sunset Hideaway has a sociable vibe. You’ll find large living spaces across two floors, making this a great spot for two groups of families looking for the occasional downtime. We loved the contemporary windows that flood the interiors with natural light, providing a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living. Its stone-walled garden is in keeping with the home’s traditional charm and offers a lovely backdrop to the sunsets over the Pyrenees each night. 

Sunset Hideaway

Gaudi might be famous for his work in Barcelona, but that hasn't stopped this home taking inspiration from the famous Catalan architect. A 200-year-old farmhouse has been turned into a slick, white-washed hangout. Modernist influences are seen in the rounded walls, arched doorways, and buckled pillars. The living room is far out, from the white pool and foosball tables to the huge semi-circular sofa. The master suite is the most impressive, sending out spaceship vibes with its round bed, droplet shaped fireplace and spacious curved bath. But not even the slinky interiors can compete with Mother Nature, as views over the hills and out to the sea abound from every angle. The garden has been planted with bougainvillea, which showers archways and dining tables with pink blossoms when it blooms. For special occasions, head to the home's club room, complete with a DJ hut and incredible sound system. Life will feel pretty amazing floating in the infinity pool or sipping cocktails on the terrace.

Small but mighty and offering many of the mod-cons that you could need for a quiet, restful stay in Les Angles – a picturesque part of the sweeping Pyrénées-Orientales mountain range offering walking and biking trails in the summer, and excellent skiing opportunities in winter – this compact, timber-clad holiday apartment reminds us of a cosy bird's nest tucked away in the area's hilly landscape. 

Whilst the wood-panelled double bedroom is brought to life with quirky design touches and exudes a uniquely alpine charm, the kitchen/living area provides the perfect place to join as a group and spend some quality time together. Indeed, the close quarters, unfussy interior, and lack of extravagant amenities mean that this home is all about two simple pleasures – reconnecting with loved ones and realigning yourself with nature.

Amble through the town of Les Angles, stopping for a bite in one of its authentic restaurants – which, thanks to its positioning close to the border, consists of a delicious blend of French and Spanish flavours packed into hearty fare for mountainous terrain. Or, why not treat yourself to an afternoon at the Angléo Spa, just 600 metres away from the apartment? 

If you fancy getting out of town and into some of the spectacular scenery that surrounds you, then take the journey of just under four kilometres to the beautiful Lake Matemale – which is known for its range of summertime watersports as well as fantastic hiking around its perimeter.

Surrounded by holm oak forests in the heart of the Les Gavarres Natural Park, this villa is an ideal retreat for nature lovers. Outside, there are plenty of shady spots and the swimming pool provides respite on hot afternoons. When it comes to mealtimes, we recommend calling upon the help of your host to arrange for a private chef to take care of dinner. Inside, beds can be configured as doubles or twins upon request and there’s an office for anyone who’s mixing business with pleasure. Location-wise, Pals Beach is less than a twenty-five-minute drive away and the town of La Bisbal d'Empordà is reached in fifteen.

Sandwiched between two national parks and stretching out to the Gulf of Roses, the area of Empuriabrava is a unique former swampland that has been turned into 40km of waterways and whitewashed villas. This home is in the heart of the development, its verdant green lawn and deep infinity pool looking out over a canal. If you've got a boat, there's space to moor it. Failing that, we suggest pulling up a chair, either right on the canal or the upstairs balcony, and watching the world float past. Located in a traditional village dating back to medieval times, you are a few steps away from the ruins of a 12th century castle with magnificent views of the Hérault valley whilst the village is also home to a bakery, general store and bar-restaurant within 300m. Just a 10-minute drive away is Pézenas, not only famous for its weekly market but also its little antique stores, inviting cafes and restaurants as well as Molière's Théâtre de Pézenas. On Friday evenings in the height of the summer the town comes alive with live music, street food and lots of good local wine during 'Les Estivales'.Languedoc's fine coastline is easily reached with Marseillan Plage and the old town of Sète within half an hour by car whilst other highlights of this region include wine villages, vineyards, garrigue perfect for hiking as well as the bustling town of Béziers. Venture a little further afield to visit the picture-perfect pilgrimage stop, Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, or spend the day exploring the magnificent citadel of Carcassonne, both classified as UNESCO World Heritage sites.
