Over three floors, with its own ski storage room and views across the countryside all the way to the nearby Lac de Matemale and the mountains beyond, it's family-friendly and roomy enough for a large group.

We love the styling here, with its mix of stone floors, local timber and exposed stone. The living room has comfy sofas and a log burner to keep everyone toasty in the depth of winter, and there are a few decorative touches that may come as a quirky surprise (we love the bear in the living room and the ski mask mirror in the hall). A well-equipped, modern kitchen comes with everything you'll need and there's a dining table seating eight.

Elsewhere, bedrooms and bathrooms are all individual and smartly furnished – our favourite being the main bedroom with its partly open en-suite. And kids will no doubt love the bunk room. Close to the centre of the village, you'll be within walking distance of its shops and restaurants, with all the resort facilities at your fingertips.

Small but mighty and offering many of the mod-cons that you could need for a quiet, restful stay in Les Angles – a picturesque part of the sweeping Pyrénées-Orientales mountain range offering walking and biking trails in the summer, and excellent skiing opportunities in winter – this compact, timber-clad holiday apartment reminds us of a cosy bird's nest tucked away in the area's hilly landscape. 

Whilst the wood-panelled double bedroom is brought to life with quirky design touches and exudes a uniquely alpine charm, the kitchen/living area provides the perfect place to join as a group and spend some quality time together. Indeed, the close quarters, unfussy interior, and lack of extravagant amenities mean that this home is all about two simple pleasures – reconnecting with loved ones and realigning yourself with nature.

Amble through the town of Les Angles, stopping for a bite in one of its authentic restaurants – which, thanks to its positioning close to the border, consists of a delicious blend of French and Spanish flavours packed into hearty fare for mountainous terrain. Or, why not treat yourself to an afternoon at the Angléo Spa, just 600 metres away from the apartment? 

If you fancy getting out of town and into some of the spectacular scenery that surrounds you, then take the journey of just under four kilometres to the beautiful Lake Matemale – which is known for its range of summertime watersports as well as fantastic hiking around its perimeter.

The Finch's Nest

Sitting on a pretty Provencal hilltop, this chateau doesn't waste this prime location. Step behind the formidable stone walls – some of which date back to the 12th century – and you're greeted with expansive rooms packed full of luxurious touches.

The arched windows and glass doors at the end of the open living room are nothing but generous when it comes to natural light, making for a lovely space in which to dine or lounge. Upstairs, the bedrooms and bathrooms are similarly lavish, especially the teak-wood four-poster beds and bathtub overlooking the outdoor space.

Speaking of which, the alfresco space at the address is pretty special, too. Overlooked by 800-year-old gargoyles, there's a small swimming pool lent a little tropicality from the neighbouring palm trees. The built-in charcoal barbecue makes it easy to whip up feasts in the summer months, as well.

When it comes to getting to know this famous region a little better, the local village of Aragon can be reached easily on foot and has some renowned restaurants for you to enjoy. To help you work up an appetite, there are lots of walking routes and outdoor activities to undertake in the nearby national parks, while La Franqui beach is only 65km away, too.

You'll find The Manoir on the outskirts of the charming village of Canet. This traditional home was built in the Belle Epoque style and it really transports you back in time – without having to give up on any modern amenities, of course. Spend a lazy day by the pool, pick up your morning croissants in the village, or play a round of petanque in the courtyard. This home invites you to sit back and enjoy life as the French do. 

The Manoir

Sandwiched between two national parks and stretching out to the Gulf of Roses, the area of Empuriabrava is a unique former swampland that has been turned into 40km of waterways and whitewashed villas. This home is in the heart of the development, its verdant green lawn and deep infinity pool looking out over a canal. If you've got a boat, there's space to moor it. Failing that, we suggest pulling up a chair, either right on the canal or the upstairs balcony, and watching the world float past. With a lived-in vibe and some unique design choices, this home is one-of-a-kind from the pink mosaic tiles of the bathroom to the bright orange bedrooms – kids will love it. There's also plenty of space to entertain the whole gang, with two kitchens, a study, a games room complete with consoles, and an open-plan living area. Come sunset, there's only one place to be, and that's on the top floor watching the last rays set over the terracotta rooftops.

This lovely home can be found in Gruissan, a picturesque town in the south of France. If you’re hoping for white sand beaches and beautiful scenery, this is an excellent choice of location. Best of all, it’s home to this stylish abode. 

This home ticks every box when it comes to fuss-free holiday homes. It’s small but perfectly formed, with a cosy living room that’s the heart of the home. Children will love sleeping on the mezzanine level, where they can have their own space while still being close to the grown-ups. 

The outside space here is sure to win over everyone, though. You’ll have access to the shared swimming pool, which is a dream to dive into on hot, sunny days. You can sunbathe alongside the pool, dipping a toe in every now and then, or choose to soak up the sun on one of two terraces. There’s shade aplenty if you’d rather curl up with a book and a lemonade, too. 

Plage de Matteille is less than a kilometre away, where you can splash in the shallows and build sandcastles. It’s also easy to stroll to the harbour promenade – it’s a lovely way to spend an evening. Hikers will be thrilled to be within reach of the trails up Massif de la Clape, which boasts some spectacular views. There’s something for everyone here.

Gaudi might be famous for his work in Barcelona, but that hasn't stopped this home taking inspiration from the famous Catalan architect. A 200-year-old farmhouse has been turned into a slick, white-washed hangout. Modernist influences are seen in the rounded walls, arched doorways, and buckled pillars. The living room is far out, from the white pool and foosball tables to the huge semi-circular sofa. The master suite is the most impressive, sending out spaceship vibes with its round bed, droplet shaped fireplace and spacious curved bath. But not even the slinky interiors can compete with Mother Nature, as views over the hills and out to the sea abound from every angle. The garden has been planted with bougainvillea, which showers archways and dining tables with pink blossoms when it blooms. For special occasions, head to the home's club room, complete with a DJ hut and incredible sound system. Life will feel pretty amazing floating in the infinity pool or sipping cocktails on the terrace.

Floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors allow the backdrop of the sea to be the mountains during your stay at this apartment on the Costa Brava. Sunny and finished with all the modern conveniences, a family will find great ease whilst at this home. Waking up to gorgeous views over the sea while you enjoy breakfast around the dining table will be a delight that won’t get boring. Both the master and children’s bunkroom opens up onto the terrace overhanging the sands of Empuriabrava beach. Speaking of, getting to and fro the golden sands and turquoise waters for water sports and sunbathing is easy, so you’ll have no trouble popping back to the terrace for lunch. The canals of the surrounding town, known as the Venice of Spain, are one of its defining attributes, so when you’re not with the kids engaging in activities, you can head out on a nightlife scene as vibrant and luxurious as some of Europe’s other seaside destinations.

Shall we dance? The music room, with its grand piano and expansive tiled floor, forms the focal point of this elegant chateau in Languedoc and will accommodate your family or wedding party with ease. And if you tire of performing the gavotte, there’s always a stylish striped chaise to rest on, or one of the 11 beds – many fitted out with canopies in true Renaissance style. Freshen up by taking a turn in the enormous grounds, with orangery and fountains. Further afield, the market town of Molière beckons, with restaurants, cafés, and chic boutiques.

With a minimalist feel that soothes the senses, this home on the Costa Brava offers sanctuary in a quiet, sunny, residential area. Cool blue feature walls and furniture echo the glittering turquoise of your private pool. Empuriabrava beach is within easy reach, just three kilometres away. Dive, sail, surf, go fishing – or stick to dry land and play some tennis, explore the Costa Brava on horseback, or hire a bike to explore the cycle paths. Enjoy al-fresco feasts by the barbecue, savouring some of the delicious produce found at local markets (including nearby Pézenas' famous Saturday morning market which dates back to the 14th century). On Friday evenings in the height of the summer the town comes alive with live music, street food and lots of good local wine during 'Les Estivales'.Languedoc's fine coastline is easily reached with Marseillan Plage and the old town of Sète within half an hour by car whilst other highlights of this region include wine villages, vineyards, garrigue perfect for hiking as well as the bustling town of Béziers. Venture a little further afield to visit the picture-perfect pilgrimage stop, Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, or spend the day exploring the magnificent citadel of Carcassonne, both classified as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

This is a stunning, modern villa located amidst picturesque vineyards on the outskirts of the medieval village of Caunes-Minervois. The villa boasts air conditioning, a heated pool, and panoramic views of the Pyrenees. The surroundings are ideal for cycling and walking, and guests can explore nearby attractions such as Carcassonne and Minerve. The villa features an elongated terrace with a sitting area, dining table, and plancha grill. The lounge is spacious and beautifully decorated with large glass windows, comfortable seating, and a flat-screen TV that can double as a virtual painting.
