Although it’s a studio, the apartment itself feels spacious and it has plenty of character courtesy of the exposed brick wall and hardwood floor. A wall of windows lets in plenty of sunshine during the day and a room divider separates the living and bedroom area from the dine-in kitchen. There’s even a stylish, Scandinavian-esque desk if you want to work remotely. If you want to get around the compact town of Annecy in a flash, your host provides complimentary bikes for sightseeing.

Our favourite spot to soak up the sunshine (and the scenery) is the deck off the main bedroom. Enjoy a cup of coffee there in the morning before rustling up breakfast in the kitchen, then grab your skis and snowboards and hit the slopes. When your toes feel frosty and your muscles are sore, head back home to a roaring fire and some delicious cheese fondue around the oak dining table before snuggling up for a family movie night in the lounge.

The holy grail of ski accommodation? Managing to bag somewhere that’s as close to the slopes as possible. Because there’s nothing worse than lugging your skis and poles awkwardly on your shoulder while walking like John Wayne in painful ski boots on black ice. Which is why we know you’re going to love this home in the centre of Tignes. In good snow conditions (this is one of the Alps' most snow-sure resorts, so that’s basically all the time) you can ski in and out of this stylish apartment. There’s plenty of storage for your skis here too, so that means you can go from pain au raisin to powder in no time at all. And that’s not all. Inside, the design of this home has been immaculately thought-out. Wooden walls and ceilings keep things nice and warm, and the faux-fur rugs, throws and cushions really ramp up the cosy factor. The bedrooms are playfully set out, with cuddly toy heads mounted on the wall in the children’s room, and luxuriously soft furry blankets in the master bedroom. And after a tough day on the piste, we can’t think of anything better than admiring the glorious mountain views at sunset before tucking into a huge pile of melted cheese (raclette and fondue sets come as standard) in the fresh and modern kitchen with a large wooden table, leather bench and pastel-coloured metal chairs underneath low-slung industrial-style lamps.

This beautiful Combloux chalet offers stunning views of Mont Blanc and is close to the ski slopes. The sun-drenched open kitchen is the perfect place to cook up delicious meals, while the spacious balcony is ideal for relaxing in the evening. The six ensuite bedrooms ensure both comfort and privacy, and the fireplace provides a cozy spot to gather after a long day on the slopes.

There's nothing shy or retiring about this Swiss chalet, where bigger is better. Set against a backdrop of towering peaks and dramatic vistas, this home has taken some of that theatre to heart. The living room is huge, with a gigantic fuchsia sofa that could fit your party – and then some – in front of a feature brick fireplace. The kitchen is well-equipped with traditional goodies, including a fondue set and raclette grill, providing fodder for epic feasts. The slopes are only 100m away – the ski lift is a kilometre away – meaning competent skiers can strap up and just speed off on a day's adventure. Big baths await to soak tired muscles in bedrooms and bathrooms, our favourite being the stretched tub in the master suite – we're pretty sure there's room for two. If you're visiting in summer, a spacious garden and terrace furniture is perfect for catching the sunset, and if you need a break from all that cheese, you can fire up the barbecue.

Located in the quaint and quiet Agentière, the chalet is nearby all the essentials yet secluded outside of the main ski resort of Chamonix.

There's a smart twist, however, with floor-to-ceiling windows at the front of the home that give unparalleled views over the snow-capped mountains. Whether you're cooking in the pine kitchen, cuddled round the feature fireplace or squashed onto the crushed velvet sofa, eyes will invariably gaze out over the magnificent vistas. In the summer, it's out to the home's balcony and grassy garden for barbecues, alfresco feasts, and even a spot of tanning on the loungers if it's warm enough. Mountain trails – both hiking and skiing – can be found not far from the plot for days exploring ridges and new pastures. When you're done, head back to the plush pad for evening soaks in the deep bathtub or a session in the private sauna.
