The open–plan kitchen–diner is definitely the heart of the home. Leading directly onto the living room, there’s no better space for a spot of socialising with family and friends – and with access to the garden from the patio doors, you won’t need to travel far to soak up the rays.

Most tourists make a beeline for the Cornish coast – but little do they know that this beloved landscape is home to another beautiful feature, the Fal River. The surroundings here are slightly different, where green pasture gives way to mixed woodland and small pebbled riverside beaches. This characterful, quintessentially Cornish cottage dates back to the 1800s and provides perfect panoramic views over these stunning vistas, with three separate outside seating areas to choose from. Watch the sailboats float by as you lie on the garden bed, or have breakfast on the terrace while waving to a passing paddle-boarder – the river is never far away, and you can even view the shimmering water from your double bed. Trelissick is just a twenty-minute drive away, and Swanpool Beach is a sandy cove half an hour away, beside Swanpool Nature Reserve. Just over a mile from the village of Stithians, down by the River Kennall, this stone cottage is set in the 7-acre land surrounding an old farmhouse. But despite its incredibly rural setting, staying here is far from the rustic experience you might expect. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Upon arrival, your host will warmly welcome you with a hamper full of luxury Cornish fare and home-baked goods to start your holiday right. While you nibble and sip, you can start exploring the cosy home. Fluffy rugs, plush sofas, and wooden floors create a sense of warmth and softness in the living space, but floor-to-ceiling windows bring the outside in. And the great outdoors are particularly great in this case. Under the wooden decking, get ready to pop champagne and soak in the hot tub. Or perhaps you’d rather recline on the outdoor sofas by the wood-burner, have a barbecue, or play a few rounds of table tennis? As you’re just a fifteen-minute drive to Gyllyngvase Beach in Falmouth, you’ll also need to pack a picnic one day and head for the shore (don’t forget to grab the beach towels that your host kindly provides).

In the centre of charming Truro, this apartment feels like a cosy ode to wool. Plush knitted throws adorn the sofa in the open-plan living room, and the bed is lined with fluffy sheepskin. Herringbone floor completes a classic look, and we love the seat in the big Georgian window (furnished with a sheepskin throw, of course) overlooking the street for a spot of people-watching. The kitchen has everything you need to cook full meals at home – perhaps courtesy of the fresh fish landed every day in the nearby harbour towns. And, if you want to dine outside, there’s a shared courtyard dappled with fairylights for the occasion.

Location-wise, you’re in the heart of town and can reach all of Truro easily on foot. Quaint cafés serving scones (jam first, of course) and cream teas, fresh seafood restaurants and plenty of shops await. Getting out to explore the area, you’ll find the Roseland Heritage Coast AONB a ten-minute drive for clifftop coastal walks, and the buzzing beach of Falmouth is a twenty-minute drive.

For a unique and unforgettable experience, stay in this operational lighthouse on the furthest point of Cornwall’s Roseland Peninsula. The sea views are second-to-none, whether that’s from the sunny patio or the detached observation room – complete with a fireplace for cosy storm watching. Seeing as this lighthouse is operational, expect to hear automatic fog signal on misty nights and see maintenance people from time to time. Other than that, the cottage is private with no public access. You’ll park in the National Trust car park – it’s a 300-metre steep path down to the cottage from there. Guests should also be aware that the home isn't suitable for children under 14, including babies. But there's a lot to love here. You even have easy access to a beautiful beach.

You'll have several choices when it comes to relaxing outdoors, with a sunny front patio, back garden and terrace, and private balcony just off the second bedroom to sit out on and enjoy the picturesque countryside views of the river below. Dine alfresco in the tiered garden, or set yourself up in the study to get some work done. For those hoping for a little more excitement in their days, you'll have kayaks at your disposal to get out on the river. Just remember to be aware of the tide times when you're out!

In the sleepy village of Malpas you'll find a fantastic local pub, as well as a farm shop and tea room all within easy walking distance. Lace up your walking boots and take advantage of some excellent country walks right from your doorstep, plus regular boat tours from the marina out to nearby locations, including the bustling nearby town of Falmouth, the Trelissick Gardens or the beautiful port of St. Mawes. There's even a ferry nearby that can take you and your car over the river to the Roseland Peninsula. When you get home, spend a cosy evening warming up on the sofa in front of the log burner as the sun sets.

Upon The Hyldreth

This beautiful Grade II-listed Georgian Manor House in the heart of Cornwall is perfect for large gatherings and celebrations. Tucked away among thirty acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, there are plenty of woodland paths, ponds and rolling hills for adults and children alike to enjoy. Gyllyngvase Beach takes less than twenty minutes to reach in the car as well. Alternatively, you could use the large lawn at the front of the home for a friendly game of croquet or cricket. Inside, you’ll be blown away by the high ceilings, snug drawing rooms and period-inspired furnishings that will bring a touch of elegance to your holiday. However, there are so many ways to let loose here. The conservatory, for example, has a billiards table, disco ball and sound system, and there's also table tennis that can be set up in the rear hall or courtyard. On sunny days, the patio with its barbecue and alfresco dining area will naturally be the place to be, but there's also the option to slip away from the crowds for a dip in the outdoor hot tub, complete with candles and LED lighting.

Festivities

Some homes are designed around a view and this is one of them. Perched close to the Cornish coastline, it's possible to gaze out at peaceful vistas of Swanpool lagoon or Falmouth Bay, depending on which of the floor-to-ceiling windows you're standing next to at any given moment. The best spot at the address, however, has to be the covered balcony, from which you can enjoy the coastal panorama with a sea breeze on your skin.

One added benefit of all this glass is the copious amount of natural light that it lets into the home and this asset is emphasised by the preference for stark white in the walls and the kitchen's sleek surfaces. The home's design is definitely shaped by contemporary minimalism, which will really sing to those who have no time for nautical kitsch found in plenty of local properties.

As a glimpse out the windows will tell you, the sea isn't all too far away – in fact, you can be standing on the sands of Swanpool beach in under five minutes' walk. This seaside spot sits on the South West Coast Path, so you can ramble on in either direction if you so wish. The town of Falmouth will take you half an hour to reach on foot, too.

Located just a short walk from Mylor’s beautiful marina sits a cottage that is just as picturesque as its surroundings. Scallop Cottage can sleep eight guests and even welcomes up to two dogs, making it a fantastic choice for a friendly family or a bunch of friends keen on escaping on a coastal holiday. Enjoy sweeping views through the large picture windows in the living room, prepare delicious meals in the country kitchen, or bask in the sunshine of your private backyard as you take in the boats of the marina bobbing with the tide of the waves. Weather permitting, we encourage you to take your meals alfresco or make your way down to the marina for a wonderful meal out. Your hosts have paid close attention to each and every element within the home, leading to a final result that is nothing short of breathtaking. A dual aspect sunroom on the first floor is the main social space and where we imagine you'll spend most of your time. 

Being encased in glass allows guests to get in touch with nature come rain or shine, while the adjacent balcony is perfect for a sunny afternoon cuppa overlooked by the resident donkeys in the next-door field.

A well-equipped kitchen is situated towards the back of the room and is more than capable of doing justice to any delicious local produce that you happen to pick up on your travels.

Head downstairs to the ground floor and unearth a gorgeous king-size bedroom, complete with a luxurious en-suite that includes an elegant freestanding bath and a spacious walk-in shower. 

Despite occupying a secluded spot in the middle of the countryside, the home is actually very well placed to explore the best of this spectacular county. Surfing hotspots including Newquay, Perranporth and Gwithian are no more than half an hour's drive. At the same time, the picturesque coastal town of St Ives offers fantastic food and high culture (courtesy of Tate St Ives), twenty-six miles away.

Mosey through the cobbled streets and stop off for a glass of cider and a pasty in the traditional pub. For an even more intimate experience, dine alfresco on the open-air table back at the cottage.

If you're visiting during the colder months, the restful abode is the perfect place to snuggle up in the evening. Brimming with original artwork and oozing charm, this coastal cottage is a real knock-out. We love every inch, from the inviting living space to the sumptuous bedroom. It's snug, but that's what makes it so cosy, and for a small space, it sure is packed with personal touches. Egyptian cotton sheets, electric fireplace, fluffy bathrobes, beach essentials, a welcome basket overflowing with breakfast items – your host has all the little details taken care of. As much as we adore the lovely kitchen, our favourite spot has to be the rustic courtyard. Dotted with olive trees and surrounded by leafy potted plants, it's the perfect place for morning coffees, alfresco dinners and evening tipples as the sun goes down. As far as locations go, this home is close to everything – it's only a ten-minute walk to Gyllyngvase Beach and five minutes to the restaurants, shops and pubs along the waterfront. While there's private parking on-site, you won't need the car for much. Don your comfiest shoes and set off on foot instead, exploring Falmouth's coastal walks, art galleries and cafes with ease.

The Hyde is special. Every inch of the home, right from the shell to the interiors, is masterfully crafted by hand. Tucked away in a dense wood, far from the world, it's a perfect retreat for a couple or a solo traveller. From the cosy Bohemian interiors to luxurious appliances (think Heston Blumenthal BBQ and Bose sound system), there's plenty to love. Step outside after a breakfast on the deck and you can spend a day swinging on the hammocks or lounging on the recliners amid birds. Revel each day in coastal walks across Porthtowan Beach until you reach the cliffs. Cycle around villages and all across this UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you're a surfer, the hosts own their own Surf shop and will be happy to help. You will be welcomed with a Cornish tea of home-made scones, clotted cream and jam. And, if in season, you may get a package of home-grown seasonal organic vegetables as a gift.

There are lots of things that impressed us about this cute cottage close to the North Cornish coastline. First off, there's a lot of room inside considering it's only for two people, with the modern corner kitchen particularly large — and well-equipped for that matter. This generosity with space will have contributed towards the M2 Accessibility Rating it received from Visit England, which marks the single-level property out as suitable for guests with reduced mobility and part-time wheelchair users. What's more, there's a private sandstone patio complete with alfresco seating and a hot tub from which to enjoy summer evening sunsets. If you prefer to watch this while sitting on the sand with the sound of the waves lapping nearby, Perranporth Beach is less than ten minutes' drive. Similarly, the towns of Truro and Newquay only take a quarter of an hour to reach by car.

Nature lovers, wild swimmers and adventurers will find perfect ease in this Cornish hideaway. You’ll be welcomed by stunning sea views, a large terrace and a hot tub. Inside, the rooms are just as enticing with locally sourced art, a wood burning fire and plenty of home comforts to ensure optimum relaxation. Your host provides a starter supply of logs and a welcome hamper. Plus, you’ll be perfectly placed for walks along the South-West Coastal Path and there are plenty of opportunities for water sports in St Anthony.

Set on twenty-six acres of rolling farmland and blessed with soaring vaulted ceilings, a sociable open layout and plenty of natural light – there's a lot to love about this gorgeous Cornish cottage. 

Underfloor heating, a wood burner and a sumptuous corner sofa create a cosy atmosphere during the cooler months. Meanwhile, an enclosed garden, outdoor hot tub and a west-facing deck make for a spectacular spot to sip on sundowners as golden hour approaches on those seemingly endless summer days.

Settle in around a fire pit in the communal courtyard and sink some beers with new friends. And on those occasions when the weather isn't playing ball, your hosts are more than happy to set up a screening room in their event space – blankets and popcorn provided.

A mile down the road is the village of Stithians. Here, you'll find a popular pub serving modern takes on British classics, a couple of well-stocked corner shops and even an artisan bakery (who'll deliver to your door if you like). But, of course, there's no need to stop by a supermarket with all this on your doorstep, though you'll find a few options 4.5 miles away in Redruth.

Stithians reservoir is sure to appeal to watersports enthusiasts, with sailing, windsurfing and paddleboarding on offer, while the Mineral Tramways cycle path is also worth exploring.

The cottage's location in the west of the county makes it impossible to stray far from either the north or south coast. Seasoned surfers and weekend warriors will appreciate the proximity to plenty of excellent surf spots, including Porthtowan, Gwithian, and Porthleven, all within half an hour's drive.

The Cornish Barn

You could sneak in through the back at this apartment in a Regency manor, but that would take away from the grand entrance worthy of a Jane Austen heroine. Sashaying through the double doors and across the marble floor, past the stone fireplace, you come to your abode. It’s in the old ballroom of the manor, and the floor-to-ceiling bays windows and gilded mirrors haven’t changed since the days of swishing gowns and music from the pianoforte (indeed, there’s still a grand piano in here). 

Rather than a bandstand, there’s now a kitchen at the head of the ballroom, and if you prefer your evenings slightly more intimate, a book-lined snug with a plush velvet sofa awaits in the bedroom. We love the hand-carved antique bed, waiting to see you off to the land of nod.

There are acres of grounds to explore on the estate, but if you want to get out and see the Cornish coast, it’s just a ten-minute drive to the beaches of St Ives Bay. The gallery-filled old fishing town of St Ives itself is just twenty minutes by car. 

Gowns & Grandeur

If you like the idea of going eco-friendly for a while but don't want to completely give up on comforts, this cosy barn powered by renewable energy could just be a happy compromise. 

The renovated cob and stone property sits within six acres of idyllic riverside woodland and is built out of natural materials, including oak, lime, cob, pigmented clay plaster and locally sourced slate. Inside, there are a few rustic features, such as the exposed stonework and wood-burning fireplace, but otherwise, it's undeniably contemporary thanks to the conservatory, sleek kitchen and pristine bathrooms. The fact that it's powered by a wind turbine and a heat pump is pretty impressive, too.

Given the peace and tranquillity of the surrounding grounds, you'll be happy to hear that there's a natural swimming pool close to the home — shared only with the host, who lives on the site, and one other barn — as well as a barbecue and some spots for an alfresco feast. 

Although it feels like you're in splendid isolation at this address, you can head back to civilisation pretty swiftly if you wish. The town of Truro takes a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, while Perranporth Beach on the north and south Cornish coastlines can be reached in just under twenty-five.

Song of the Land

The journey to this charming West Cornish home is one of winding country lanes and wild, untouched beauty. You'll find it nestled in a twenty-six-acre Victorian dairy farm amidst verdant pastures, wildflower meadows and a picturesque cluster of cottages. 

Set in an old stable, the pastoral facade of this home delights from the offset. Inside, renovated interiors ensure comfort and style. We love the open-plan living space, with its fully-equipped country kitchen, large dining table and cosy lounge, complete with a wood-burning stove. Spend mornings huddled here with a cup of tea, slathering salted butter onto fresh bread from the local bakery – delivered daily to your doorstep if you wish. Outside, you'll find the enclosed garden, promising privacy and dressed to the nines with a firepit, barbecue and woodfired hot tub. Spend balmy evenings here, toasting marshmallows at sunset.

With its off-the-beaten-track location and lush surroundings, we wouldn't blame you for never leaving this pocket of heaven. Though if you fancy exploring, the towns of Redruth, Falmouth and Helston are less than twenty minutes away by car, while the honeypot haunt of St Ives is a thirty-five-minute drive away. The closest village, Stithians, can be reached in half an hour on foot. Stop by for a hearty pub lunch, or visit the local reservoir for watersports galore.

Scandinavian cabin chic in the heart of the Cornish countryside, this gorgeous three-bedroom cottage is unrecognisable from its former incarnation as the farm's dairy. 

Inside, your hosts have made clever use of unfinished natural materials to provide a link to the landscape, with heated tiled floors, comfy seating and a wood burner adding to the cosy atmosphere. Vibrant prints and luxurious fabrics characterise the two double bedrooms, with one boasting a four-poster bed and the other finding space for a freestanding tub. Meanwhile, a bespoke bunk bed adds an element of fun to the third. 

Step out onto the west-facing deck for glorious sunsets, best enjoyed from the warmth of the wood-fired hot tub. Afterwards, dry off by the fire pit before cooking some locally sourced produce on the barbecue. Alternatively, grab a seat in the communal courtyard with friends old and new.

Away from the cottage, the village of Stithians is just a mile down the road or a half-hour scenic walk away via the network of bridleways and footpaths that crisscross the Cornish countryside. The popular Seven Stars Inn serves modern British classics and cold pints, while the corner shops and local artisan bakery ensure you can shop local for your whole stay.

You’ll be pleased to know it's only a five-minute walk from your door, where alongside stunning scenery, you’ll find a gorgeous coastal path, and a handful of charming beachside cafes and eateries. Refuel on local produce at the Gull Rocks Bar & Coffee House at the beach’s entrance after an afternoon spent splashing about, and take in the stunning vistas afforded by its prime location. The Treguth Inn, hailing back to the thirteenth century also awaits just five minutes away, while several more traditional pubs and desirable restaurants can be found within a fifteen-minute drive. The choice is all yours. 

A short twenty-minute drive away is the Gannel Estuary, which separates neighbouring Crantock village from Newquay. Have a go at canoeing in the estuary, or try your hand at paddle-boarding over in Crantock. On quieter days, why not go for fish and chips followed by some ice cream in idyllic fishing villages such as Mevagissey, Mousehole or Gorran Haven, all within an hour's drive? Whatever you choose to do, you won't be short of fun.
  
Of course, such is the high-quality amenities, you don't even need to leave the house. An open living area is blessed with natural light and plenty of space, perfect for social evenings. Chill on the sofas, sit with a glass of beer on the kitchen bar or take to the circular table for dinner. For a different atmosphere, you're a short drive from picturesque fishing villages like Portscatho and Portloe. After a day on the water or exploring the local area, return to a catered candlelit dinner looking out over the sea (available at an additional cost) before cosying up around the log-burning stove and curling up with a book and a glass of wine.
