You could sneak in through the back at this apartment in a Regency manor, but that would take away from the grand entrance worthy of a Jane Austen heroine. Sashaying through the double doors and across the marble floor, past the stone fireplace, you come to your abode. It’s in the old ballroom of the manor, and the floor-to-ceiling bays windows and gilded mirrors haven’t changed since the days of swishing gowns and music from the pianoforte (indeed, there’s still a grand piano in here). 

Rather than a bandstand, there’s now a kitchen at the head of the ballroom, and if you prefer your evenings slightly more intimate, a book-lined snug with a plush velvet sofa awaits in the bedroom. We love the hand-carved antique bed, waiting to see you off to the land of nod.

There are acres of grounds to explore on the estate, but if you want to get out and see the Cornish coast, it’s just a ten-minute drive to the beaches of St Ives Bay. The gallery-filled old fishing town of St Ives itself is just twenty minutes by car.

Just a five-minute walk to the centre of town and a seven-minute stroll from Carbis Bay, the house is perfectly placed for exploring the delights of this sought-after seaside postcode. Back home, the outside space is the real star of the show with a comfortably furnished summerhouse filled with tasteful artwork and nautical adornments. We can think of nothing better than watching the sunset over Godrevy and beyond from here. In warmer months, take to the flower-bedded terrace for alfresco dining and ocean views or find a quiet enclosed patio for a relaxing read in the sun. Stepping inside, you'll find a well-presented interior with light wooden flooring, ornamental fireplaces and exposed brickwork. We also found there to be an industrial-chic styling around the home – from the cooper framed bed in the master bedroom to the low-hanging lampshades over the dining table. There is of course a freestanding bathtub for relaxing soaks after wandering the Cornish coast as well as an abundance of light and airy living space to sprawl out and unwind. There's a traditional country-house kitchen with all the basic appliances for cooking hearty meals, although we'd be tempted to wander into town for a spot of locally sourced and adored fish and chips.

The village setting is quintessentially Cornish, with the beach just five minutes down the road and lovely local pubs and cafes within easy reach (your closest is right around the corner). For travels further afield, guests can explore English heritage sites and well-preserved National Trust houses and gardens – we'd recommend bringing a car to easily tick the off the list. The local coastline provides excellent surf and beautiful hiking trails, adored by local lovers of the outdoors.

The tiny hamlet of Crowlas is home to this rustic stone cottage, located less than a five-minute walk from the village centre. Stepping foot inside this former hay barn, the interiors might surprise you. While the furnishings and the kitchen are wonderfully modern, the wooden stairs and the wood burning stove are gorgeous, rustic features which make the space feel warm and homely. After a windswept day at the beach, coming home will feel like bliss when you can curl up by the fire with a cup of tea. And the flames continue outside. With a fire pit and a barbecue, the kids can roast marshmallows while someone else handles the burgers on the grill. This garden is a stunning spot where you can let the little ones run around – and you can lie back in the sun loungers to enjoy the serenity of the countryside. For a day out of your sanctuary, hop in the car and head through the village to pick up picnic supplies. As the crow flies, you’re under two miles from the rugged coasts of Cornwall. However, we recommend checking out the fishing village of Padstow, about an hour away. Or St Ives is only a fifteen-minute drive from home, where you can visit high-end restaurants and visit the Tate Gallery.

Or head inside, where you'll be greeted with large bay windows – admire the town, harbour and the sparkling sea from here. Our favourite spot has to be the plush velvet window seat in the bedroom. With two living areas and several outdoor spaces, this home is perfect for a family or group of friends looking to spread out. To top it all, there's parking for up to two cars, which is a rare bonus in St. Ives.

The vibrant town centre is a five-minute walk, where you'll find plenty of bars, restaurants and shops. It's the same walking distance to Porthminster Beach, one of St Ives's six beaches – the others are Porthgwidden, Harbour, Porthmeor, Lambeth Walk and Bamaluz – so you're spoilt for choice. For art lovers, the Barbara Hepworth Museum is a seven-minute saunter, while the Tate St Ives is eleven minutes on foot.
