You can picture the relief on the weather-worn fisherman’s face, returning to this cosy abode with a fire crackling in the stove (it’s electric now) and stargazy pie steaming away on the farmhouse-style table in the kitchen. Your days in Porthleven don’t have to be so hard, meandering down to the harbourfront in just a few minutes where boats still land the fresh catch of the day, supplying a glut of independent restaurants. There’s a soft-sand beach here too, for days on the surfboard.

Speaking of which, if you want to hang your wetsuit out to dry and store your board, there’s a private backyard just for this. Inside, we love the exposed stone walls still on display – a nod to the home’s history. Sinking into one of the sofas is a delight after a day on a surfboard or walking the South West Coastal Path. Then there are the bedrooms with cushioned piled high on the beds – the epitome of cosiness.

The Helford River is Cornwall’s best-kept secret. The stunning scenery even inspired the author Daphne du Maurier to write her novel Frenchman’s Creek. We loved this home’s wooden deck – with stunning sea views, a dining table, barbecue, two loungers and Adirondacks facing the ocean, it’s fully equipped for time well-spent outside. Factor in that you’re less than a ten-minute walk from the beach and you have a real winner. Meander down the South West Coast Path to laidback Sennen Cove with its stretch of golden sand and tropical-blue water. Here Cornish fishermen brush shoulders with tousle-haired surfers. We recommend renting a board and catching a wave – there are two highly-rated surf schools in the area. When you return home, hit the outdoor shower and set your wetsuits to dry in the warm utility room before heading inside, where you’ll find it’s just as lovely as its surroundings – smart and minimal with touches of nautical chic. We especially love the floor-to-ceiling windows in the living area. Kick back on the sofas and play a board game or puzzle all together. Then gather around the light wood table for a feast before retiring to the bedrooms for some restful sleep, knowing there’s another beautiful seaside morning waiting for you when you awake.

For a unique and unforgettable experience, stay in this operational lighthouse on the furthest point of Cornwall’s Roseland Peninsula. The sea views are second-to-none, whether that’s from the sunny patio or the detached observation room – complete with a fireplace for cosy storm watching. Seeing as this lighthouse is operational, expect to hear automatic fog signal on misty nights and see maintenance people from time to time. Other than that, the cottage is private with no public access. You’ll park in the National Trust car park – it’s a 300-metre steep path down to the cottage from there. Guests should also be aware that the home isn't suitable for children under 14, including babies. But there's a lot to love here. You even have easy access to a beautiful beach.

Idyllic locations such as Padstow and St Ives can be reached in less than an hour, and the famed Eden Project is just a forty-five minute drive away.
 
On the other hand, Holywell Bay has one of the most beautiful beaches in the county. You’ll be pleased to know it's only a five-minute walk from your door, where alongside stunning scenery, you’ll find a gorgeous coastal path, and a handful of charming beachside cafes and eateries. Refuel on local produce at the Gull Rocks Bar & Coffee House at the beach’s entrance after an afternoon spent splashing about, and take in the stunning vistas afforded by its prime location. The Treguth Inn, hailing back to the thirteenth century also awaits just five minutes away, while several more traditional pubs and desirable restaurants can be found within a fifteen-minute drive. The choice is all yours. 

A short twenty-minute drive away is the Gannel Estuary, which separates neighbouring Crantock village from Newquay. Have a go at canoeing in the estuary, or try your hand at paddle-boarding over in Crantock. On quieter days, why not go for fish and chips followed by some ice cream in idyllic fishing villages such as Mevagissey, Mousehole or Gorran Haven, all within an hour's drive? Whatever you choose to do, you won't be short of fun.
  
Of course, such is the high-quality amenities, you don't even need to leave the house. An open living area is blessed with natural light and plenty of space, perfect for social evenings. Chill on the sofas, sit with a glass of beer on the kitchen bar or take to the circular table for dinner. On cooler nights, gather around the log burner, or venture out to the garden for a spot of stargazing by the outdoor heater.
 
On warm summer evenings, get comfy on the cushioned sofas as you watch the sunset, or take in views of Penhale, a protected area for wildlife and ecology. When the sun sets, turn on the outdoor lights, and for true indulgence, treat yourselves to a dip in the hot tub.

Nestled into Porthleven's famous Victorian terrace, Port View benefits from – you guessed it – breathtaking vistas across the inner and outer harbour. Relax in the garden and enjoy the fresh, sea air. Recently renovated, the space retains much of its original character, and we love the bespoke New England style shutters. Make yourself comfortable in the window seat and admire the seascape.

When you're ready to explore the area, you're just a two-minute walk from Porthleven Beach, while the local shops, and your host's favourite pub is around five minutes on foot. We highly recommend packing comfortable walking shoes because the coastal paths here are spectacular and not to be missed. Of course, there are also plenty of water-related activities available as well. Enjoy a boat tour to discover the area's wildlife,  go fishing or rent surfboards – there's plenty going on and this home sits in the very heart of the action.

Instead, you're treated to sculptural driftwood lamps, moody seascape paintings, and a sophisticated palette of deep blues and grey tones that reflect the British weather more accurately than the usual sunshine yellow. If you can bear to leave the home, there are plenty of shops, restaurants and places of interest in the immediate vicinity. Fowey is a beautiful harbourside town with public events occurring throughout the year. The local community is a healthy mix of all ages who are warm and friendly and adept at making newcomers feel welcome.

If you want to explore this stunning location, the South West Coast Path is just beyond the garden. Or spend the day on beautiful Praa Sands, 3 kilometres away. A little further afield there are attractions such as St Michael's Mount, The Minack Theatre and Penzance to discover.

Fishing boats and surfboards sit side by side in the harbour, just outside this home’s walls. It’s in the centre of Looe, just five minutes from the beach and a three-minute walk from the train station. A working fishing town, the immediate area is filled with restaurants and pubs serving the freshest catch of the day and there’s a town beach where soft sand slips into turquoise sea. 

The view from big, Victoriana windows is over the quayside of the East Looe River so you can watch boats putting in and out. This place may look like a grand, Victorian villa on the outside, but inside it’s pristine white and modern with vibrant pops of silky blue. An exposed stone fireplace still sits at the heart of the living room though, where French doors let the natural light stream in. Cook your own catch of the day in the ultra-modern kitchen which is big enough for several chefs to bustle around in.

The real bonus here is the private terrace, which is set with a table and chairs. Overlooking the quayside, this is the perfect spot to share a bottle of something bubbly as the sun goes down over the water.

You could sneak in through the back at this apartment in a Regency manor, but that would take away from the grand entrance worthy of a Jane Austen heroine. Sashaying through the double doors and across the marble floor, past the stone fireplace, you come to your abode. It’s in the old ballroom of the manor, and the floor-to-ceiling bays windows and gilded mirrors haven’t changed since the days of swishing gowns and music from the pianoforte (indeed, there’s still a grand piano in here). 

Rather than a bandstand, there’s now a kitchen at the head of the ballroom, and if you prefer your evenings slightly more intimate, a book-lined snug with a plush velvet sofa awaits in the bedroom. We love the hand-carved antique bed, waiting to see you off to the land of nod.

There are acres of grounds to explore on the estate, but if you want to get out and see the Cornish coast, it’s just a ten-minute drive to the beaches of St Ives Bay. The gallery-filled old fishing town of St Ives itself is just twenty minutes by car.

With breathtaking views of the Atlantic ocean, as well as an abundance of flora and fauna, from seabirds to golden gorse and pink thrift, the sights you see here are second to none. If you’re lucky, you may even wake up to find seals lounging on the rocks below the headland. In that case, be like them, sit out on the patio and let the sound of the crashing waves relax you.
