It's a nature lover's paradise. Enjoy taking your dog for a morning walk along the coastal path, less than a thirty-second walk away. Mornings spent here are peaceful and serene and by lunchtime, families will gather along the golden sands for a beautiful day by the sea. Take leisurely afternoon swims in the sea, before making the short walk home for a glass of wine in your garden. As afternoon turns into evening, you'll love the blue skies slipping away into shades of orange and purples, before unveiling a twinkly starry sky. It's the best seat in the house, the perfect place to enjoy breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. If you do want to venture out, the lovely harbour town of Dartmouth, a twenty-five-minute drive away, is lined with restaurants, pubs, and bars. You can't beat seafood when it's this fresh!

First of all, there’s a private terrace, furnished with table and chairs, right on the promenade. Glass sliding doors lead from here to the living room, so you can still hear the sea from the comfort of the sofa. Beachglass-blue bowls and turquoise cushions pop against the otherwise white and cream backdrop inside. The kitchen is tucked away separately, with everything you need to cook a family meal.

On the promenade, it’s no surprise that you’re mere footsteps from the beach and there’s a charming local pub just two doors down. The South West Coastal Path runs right outside the door of this home and, if you want to explore the area by car, you’ll find Dartmouth a twenty-five-minute drive away and Salcombe half an hour away.

Originally constructed in the 1800s to house horse-drawn carriages, it's been renovated to retain the original charm and features, such as the exposed roof timbers in the living area. We love how welcoming the space feels, with sofas you want to sink into and a smart kitchen for rustling up Devon-inspired cuisine of your own. Share breakfast around the dining table before heading out for a day in the sun – this home is just metres from the beach. Stretch out on the shores of Slapton Sands while kids splash in the calm waters. When you're feeling peckish, pop home for lunch or grab a bite at one of the quaint eateries and pubs along the shore. Dartmouth and Kingsbridge aren't far – both a twenty-minute drive – if you'd like to pick up the pace and explore more of the South Devon Coast, but there's a quiet charm to the sleepy village of Torcross that we adore. This charming little cottage used to be owned by a coastguard and is like a home away from home – but with a better view. Every morning you get to wake up to the sound of the Start Way lake and the sea, with a gorgeous view of the glistening lake from one of the bedrooms. Stepping outside in the morning, you breathe in the ocean breeze while making your way to The Billy Can Cafe for a toasty cup of coffee. Spend the afternoon exploring the hidden gems that Devon has to offer – our favourite is the Stokeley farm shop that stocks products made by local artisans. With the dog–friendly beach practically on your doorstep, why not tuck into a steaming portion of traditional fish and chips while sitting on the sand? 

As the sun sets and the tide goes in, head back home to snuggle up in front of the fireplace. Pop your favourite film on, or pick up your latest read, and while away the rest of the day in total bliss.

Going solely by the weathered stone exterior and the wooden beams underneath the vaulted ceiling inside, you could be forgiven for assuming that this home is a rustic getaway in the middle of the countryside. It's actually to be found right on the South West Coast Path, close to three miles of shingle beach. Once a coach house, the property has been given a contemporary makeover inside, with parquet wood flooring underfoot, a kitchen finished in a modern shade of grey and bathrooms with neat brick-style tiling. We're sure you'll find it a perfectly relaxing place to return to after a day of exploring the locale. Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve sits pretty much next door, while Blackpool Sands can be reached in ten minutes in the car.

Positioned overlooking Start Bay on the south coast of Devon, this home has been thoughtfully put together, making the most of its incredible views. Architect designed using a combination of steel, glass and stone, there's more than a hint of a Mediterranean feel to the place. The interiors are elegant and luxurious, with rooms spread across four floors and encompassing a self-contained studio apartment. With all eyes on the rolling hills and the seascape to the rear, the design features several balconies and terraces – all offering places to sit and take it all in. There's so much to love about this home, but some of our favourite features are the cinema room, the floor-to-ceiling views from the dining table and the choice of terraces outside where you can eat your meals together. By day you can explore the coastal paths and villages, or drive to Salcombe or Dartmouth in less than half an hour. For a stay to remember, look no further than this cottage on the cliff edge overlooking Start Bay. The home is part of an operational lighthouse, and the views are second to none – especially from the decked patio. Flexible sleeping arrangements mean this place is ideal for a family or group of friends, though the steep stairs may make it unsuitable for those with limited mobility. It’s worth noting, however, that there's an automatic electronic fog signal, but earplugs are provided during occasional periods of fog or mist. Guests can explore the South West Coast Path, which runs adjacent to the building, or visit Lannacombe Beach, a twelve-minute drive away.

Families should note that child-friendly amenities aren’t available here and that little ones will need to be supervised in the communal garden. Still, it’s a fantastic location with easy access to East Portlemouth's beaches, as well as hiking trails through the surrounding countryside – not to mention private parking for adventures further afield.

This cottage is adjacent to a working lighthouse which dates back to 1863. A sandy beach is situated a twenty-minute drive away, as is the charming coastal town of Salcombe. It would be hard to beat this home's stunning sea views, and with direct access to the South West Coast Path, this is a true Devon gem. You can enjoy your morning coffee or a sunset drink outdoors on the gravelled patio, while inside, an electric stove awaits for cosy cooler evenings. Bear in mind that due to the cottage’s location hikers and lighthouse visitors will be passing by, so there's not complete privacy here. And, on rare occasions, the fog alarm might sound but your host provides earplugs to counteract any potential noise.

With flexible arrangements for each bedroom, which are spaced apart over three floors, this home perfectly suits big groups looking to holiday together without crowding each other.

Easily accessible courtesy of the lift from the covered parking area, head on up to the third floor and you’ll find an open-plan, light-filled space waiting to welcome you home. Overlooking an arm of the Salcombe-Kingsbridge Estuary, this home not only has a stunning waterfront view in its arsenal, but the rolling countryside packs a pretty impressive punch, too. For that very valid reason, we recommend spending as much time as possible out on the decked terrace – whether that’s in the hot tub or simply enjoying a cup of coffee in one of the outdoor chairs is completely up to you, as long as you’re keeping an eye on the horizon. 

Popular with paddle boarders, you might even spot a few going by when you’re taking in the water views. If you’re eager to try it out for yourself, there’s a rental place a five-minute walk away and they’ll see that you’re joining the fray in no time. Prefer to admire the water from afar? Also completely fine, and you might find yourself frequenting the famous Crabshell Inn. With its waterfront position, you’re able to appreciate the surroundings while you sip a pint, and it’s only a five-minute stroll away from home. 

Explore the market town of Kingsbridge, drive to Salcombe and visit as much of South Devon as you can manage in between all of the relaxation you’ll be doing in this home. Kindle a fire in the wood-burning stove and sit back with a glass of wine as you watch the world go by through the floor to ceiling windows.

It’s also in a great location – the Salcombe-Kingsbridge Estuary and the sandy beaches of south Devon are within easy driving distance.

Tucked away in a secluded valley, yet with South Ham's water's edge and Devon's beaches a short drive away, the setting of this cottage is one of a kind. Part of an impressive country estate, kids will love the shared indoor heated pool, tennis court, playground and vast communal lawns found within the grounds – not to mention the trampoline, slide, climbing frame, sit-on tractors and football pitch. It's worth noting this elegant cottage only has a small private courtyard leading off the kitchen. With no local amenities to walk to, you'll need a car to get out and about. Though you're rarely a fifteen-minute drive from South Devon's sheltered coves and South Ham's water's edge is even closer. There's plenty to keep everyone busy within the cottage's vast communal grounds, too. Think shared indoor heated pool, tennis court, playground, communal lawns and alfresco terraces. Prefer a little more privacy? That wood-burning fire and small suntrap terrace back at the elegant cottage should do nicely.

It’s ideally located a short stroll from Island Street where you can nip over to its artisanal shops for morning croissants and essentials, while Salcombe Castle and the nearby beaches can easily be reached by car.

Inside, a cosy seating area unfolds into a modern kitchen – we loved the glass ceiling and creamy neutral colour scheme. Head upstairs for quiet bedrooms which guarantee a peaceful night's sleep.

On warm afternoons, spill out onto the terrace for barbecues in the balmy sunshine. Or why not pack a picnic and enjoy a bite to eat in Coronation Park, a five-minute walk away. If you’d like to learn more about the local history, visit the Dartmouth Museum before exploring Bayard’s Cove Fort. 

And of course, no trip to southwest England would be complete without a day at the beach, so slap on your sun cream and make haste to the Blue Flag Award-winning Blackpool Sands, just a ten-minute drive from your doorstep.

There’s no chance of forgetting where you are when you stay in The Bowline. The nautical theme runs through the entire apartment (and when you head out, the entire town of Salcombe), but with good reason. This part of south Devon has some of the most picturesque coast in the country, so it makes sense that the area emphasises that. The apartment itself is charming, with a real homely atmosphere. It’s not huge, but if you don’t try to pack it out, it’s plenty big enough, and Diana’s hosting is top-notch, which goes a very long way.

The Bowline

Located within a charming Victorian house overlooking Salcombe Bay is this lovely apartment. The full-height arched windows flood this space with light and allow guests to enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding area. You’re just a short walk from Salcombe High Street, and if you wish to drive, you’ll be pleased to know there’s parking here (it’s a shared driveway with your neighbour). And while the outdoor dining set is a little sun-bleached, it’s a lovely spot to enjoy alfresco breakfasts and barbecue dinners. Inside, the open-plan kitchen and dining room are perfect for entertaining family and friends, while the living room is an inviting space to share a few games of cards.

You won't be short of things to do with a stay at this South Devon cottage set on a country estate. Expect a shared indoor swimming pool, gym, tennis court, a kid's playground, and so the list goes on. If you don't feel like being sociable, there's a private courtyard back at home for summer months and a wood-burning fire to hunker down beside in winter. Set in a small, secluded valley, you'll need a car to get out and about here. But we don't think you'll mind, with South Hams and Bantham Beach both just a short drive away.

Inside, this place is the epitome of good taste – and we'd expect nothing less from arguably the prettiest village on the South Devon coast. The interior designer host has effortlessly nailed coastal chic, fusing muted blues and greys, tasteful seascapes on the wall, and dashes of driftwood.

Sunny mornings call for lazy alfresco breakfasts in your private garden to steal a glimpse of the nearby sea, hills and fields beyond. Meanwhile, kids and furry friends can run off some energy on the lawns  – the village park, just a one-minute walk away, can help with that too. 

When it's time for some seaside nostalgia, spend bucket-and-spade days down on Salcombe's sandy beaches – just a twenty-minute scenic stroll along the coastal path past the ruins of the village's castle fort. Up the ante with sailing, kayaking, and surfing on the estuary (a five-minute stroll away). Or mooch along to the cafes, restaurants, traditional pubs and ice cream parlours of the village's well-heeled high street (two minutes from your door) – you'll be in good company.

Tucked away in a peaceful but central part of Salcombe, this home had our attention the second we caught those views. With a raised position and spread over three floors, the windows are perfect for watching the town’s iconic harbour. Downstairs, the large living space combines the dining room, kitchen, and living room, meaning guests can easily break off into smaller groups while still being together. Nearby, the adventurous can try crabbing along Victoria Quay or even have a go at paddle boarding. You’ll also want to take advantage of the free parking permit, ideal for exploring even more of Devon’s stunning coastline.

The Seashells for Days

Set in the heart of bustling Salcombe, this former fisherman's cottage is a delightful place to call home. As you can expect, the interior has plenty of coastal charm, though it is a tad snug upstairs. All the contemporary comforts are accounted for, be it underfloor heating or White Company toiletries. Evenings call for cocktails in the front courtyard – there's a distillery just across the street where you can sample local gin. Also within walking distance are Salcombe's artisan shops, independent eateries, and picturesque harbour, perfect for dog walks in the sun.

We love the flairs of modernity and fun at this Victorian townhouse, placed just a ten-minute stroll from Dartmouth's harbour edge.

Spread out over three floors and glowing from top-to-toe in crisp white, this family retreat is a joy to return home to. Vintage memorabilia posters and zesty pops of colour perk the space up a treat, while period features and antique pieces bring all the character and charm.

Over in the first of two living rooms, butter-soft sofas placed beside the fire are more than inviting. As is the Gatsby-esque 1920's mini bar in the grown-up feel sitting room next door – playfully known as the Cocktail Room by the owners. And the shaker-style kitchen makes cooking and entertaining a joy – especially with it's handy opening out to the sitting room so that you can keep an eye on the rest of your troops.

While over in the main house, discover three elegant bedrooms, each with a sleek bathroom. The cosy sitting room and log-burning fires are a nice touch for hunkering down on winter nights. And that made-for-action kitchen with double dishwashers and a sizable wine fridge will make entertaining a breeze. 

Salcombe Muse

Who could fail to fall in love with this unique home close to the centre of Dartmouth? Everything about it is charming and quirky, with its narrow 17th Century frontage having earned it the nickname 'the skinny house' locally. Set on one of Dartmouth's hillside roads, it also happens to have uninterrupted views over the town, the river and all the way to the sea.

With three main floors, guests enter through an ancient door surrounded by exquisite carvings dating back to 1629, when the town was known for its shipbuilding. Originally the entrance and annexe to Mount Galpine House, owned by the notable Holdsworth family, it's recently been modernised and converted into a delightful home away from home. Packed with character, there's also a contemporary feel, with a glossy galley kitchen and comfy modern furniture – there's not a hint of chintz in sight.

As you would expect, the rooms are narrow, so a living room on the first floor is home to a long, squashy sofa and all eyes are drawn to the window with its stunning view. But there are a few surprises in store too – like the tiny kitchen courtyard, designed to give light and ventilation, and the mezzanine bathroom tucked into the rafters of the vaulted master bedroom. 

But nothing can prepare you for this home's biggest surprise. Newly opened to guests, its beautiful 'secret garden' is located down steep steps on the other side of the narrow road. Built into walls once used as a Second World War gun placement and artillery store, it looks out over the town to defend the river. Along with plenty of natural planting and a courtyard that feels almost magical, there's a wonderful slate-roofed conservatory built against the living wall of rock and moss. Tended by a gardener, it's a hidden gem of outdoor space, with a barbecue for summer evenings.
