This charming cottage is in Northleach, a market town in the heart of the Cotswolds. The weekly market is held every Wednesday, a bakery is a few steps away, and there’s a pub down the road – you’ll have everything you need right on your doorstep. Bourton-on-the-Water is a short drive away, and you’ll have lots of National Trust landmarks nearby. The cottage is cosy and welcoming, with a wood-burning stove and simple, elegant decor. The small courtyard garden has a water feature.

Perhaps unusually for a cottage, this quaint abode in the village of Northleach is spread across three floors. Guests in search of a Cotswolds base can enter into the kitchen and dining area, before climbing up to the compact yet cosy middle floor sitting room. Another flight of stairs then leads you to your choice of two double bedrooms, both perfectly comfortable if on the smaller side. While Northleach has plenty of charm of its own, with shops, cafés and pubs all close to the cottage, you can also venture further afield by car to other quaint villages like Bourton-on-the-Water and larger towns like Cheltenham.

Constructed out of the traditional creamy-yellow Cotswold stone, this home is actually a recent addition to the small town of Northleach. Guests will be happy to hear that the amount of effort that has been applied to ensuring the exterior blends in with the locale has also been made with fitting out the interior. All throughout, a thoroughly modern colour palette of muted greys and whites dominate, with flourishes of personality coming from the chandelier-esque light fixture in the dining room and abstract artwork hanging on the wall. Outside, there's a large garden with a charcoal barbecue and seating on the patio where you can make the most of summer afternoons. Given the prime location within the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there are plenty of hiking routes and rural attractions nearby, including Lodge Park and Sherborne Park Estate only seven minutes' drive away. Even closer, there's a pub, cafe and even a wine cellar just a ten-minute stroll away.

The town of Northleach is an ancient area of The Cotswolds, having existed since around 780 AD. As it’s right in the middle of a recognised ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, you won’t be short of glorious hikes while staying in this part of the country. From this huge Grade II listed house, built in 1633, you can stroll twelve minutes to the local pub, or eight minutes in the other direction to the annual Steam and Vintage Show. And this traditional, English, country lifestyle continues in the home itself. Step through the 17th-century front door and onto the polished, Cotswold limestone flooring. Get someone to play a jaunty tune on the upright piano as a soundtrack to exploring the home. The decor marries rustic and modern in an incredibly elegant way. Fresh, white walls and glass-topped tables sit alongside colourful artwork and trinkets. In contrast, we love every original element of this historic abode, with chunky timber beams, inglenooks, a wood-burning stove, and its half-acre, walled sculpture garden. A rural idyll set on a small, family-run farm, this place oozes charm. A converted stone barn packed with character, it's the ideal place if you're looking for a country bolthole for a large group. In terms of style, it's all stone floors, oak beams and classic country furnishings. The huge wall of windows floods the main living room with light, with its feature log burner, grand piano and galleried landing taking centre stage. There's a garden room, a large kitchen-diner and, if the youngsters would rather watch a film separately, there's a cosy snug. Bedrooms are supremely comfortable, and you'll have enough bathrooms to banish those morning queues for the shower. If it's a nice day (and why wouldn't it be?) you can step out onto the home's beautiful terrace for breakfast overlooking the garden – a safe and enclosed space for the children to play. Explore the farm, owned by the same family for 220 years, and you may meet some of their rare breed sheep, cattle, hens and pet donkeys. Wildlife-friendly, the farm is also home to rare native flora and fauna, and the owners are happy to sell you their honey, eggs, lamb and beautiful woven blankets produced from sheep on the farm. All this and it's just a twenty-minute drive to Cheltenham in one direction and to Stow-on-the-Wold in the other.

We adore the fragrant, lavender-filled south-facing garden – it's the perfect spot for a sunny afternoon barbecue followed by a lavender martini. The level lawn is ideal for garden games too. The grounds here are a real highlight – there's even a beautiful pear tree flourishing at the front.

Inside, you'll find an array of character features such as the original quarry floor tiles in the hall, exposed stone walls, beams, decorative fireplaces and stained glass windows. There's a cosy snug as well as an elegant living room, so this place is ideal for families or friends looking to spread out a little. To top it all, there's parking for three cars in a private bay behind the house – a total bonus in such a central location.

When you feel like exploring this beautiful village, you'll discover its low bridges, pretty waterways and traditional stone houses. Now, just a few years after the herds of Bibury Farm moved out, they’re tastefully clad in shades of grey, with Gothic-style mirrors, pastel-daubed canvases and handmade tiles. One of a beautifully renovated cluster of former outhouses in the scenic Cotswolds countryside, this home has been styled by leading local interior designer Pippa Paton to make a seriously chic country escape. Highlights include the free-standing bath in the master bedroom, wood burner in the sophisticated living room and the private terrace. Not to mention its sustainability credentials (no oil or gas, ground-sourced heating, waste recycling and refillable bath products), concierge service for local bookings and welcoming two-dog policy. Located between Burford and Cirencester, it’s a great base to explore all the Cotswolds has to offer, by car or on foot. The nearest village of Bibury, a ten-minute walk, is home to a Saxon Church, the famous 14th-century street Arlington Row and – of most interest to us, if we’re honest  – the Catherine Wheel pub and its delicious roasts. We're sure you'll agree, this is a seriously good shed.

On warm days, spend hazy afternoons in the courtyard, sipping cider. Get to know your locale with a gentle stroll along the River Windrush, a minute from your abode or take the ten-minute drive to Stow-on-the-Wold, the Cotswold’s highest town, for a spot of antique shopping or a browse of the Farmer’s Market held every second Thursday of each month. And before you snuggle up in the quiet bedrooms, nip to the Kingsbridge pub for a nightcap, it’s only 260 feet from your doorstep.

Combining a traditional stone exterior with a renovated interior, we found this former barn to be the perfect base for relaxing after an excursion into the Cotswolds. With a twin room that can be turned into a double, the home is ideal for both families or two couples. We love how cosy the living area is, with underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove being an antidote to any bracing weather outside. When it's sunny, the enclosed garden is great for games and letting the kids tire themselves out. Further afield, you'll find plenty of Cotswold villages accessible by foot.

This 17th-century listed cottage is situated in the village of Great Rissington, a short drive from picturesque Bourton-on-the-Water, while Stow-on-the-Wold is 4 miles away. There’s a pub a very short stroll away or for walkers, the famous Cotswolds Way spans 102 miles starting at Chipping Campden and ending at Bath Abbey.
