Living on the grounds of a 16th century country-house in the lush green Cotswolds (the largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) already creates the ideal setting for nature lovers. Once you settle in with biscuits, fresh scones and fruits on arrival (among other goodies) and befriend the curious chickens, embark on a walk through the rolling Cotswold hills and valleys. While Netflix and cocoa are perfect for rainy days in, there is a whole world out there on sunnier days. The Cotswold Way is a trail that we’d definitely recommend, with plenty of historic pubs along the way, each serving their own collection of local ales. The home is located in Painswick, a village known as The Queen of the Cotswolds and characterised by beautiful narrow streets of honey coloured stone buildings dating back to the fifteenth century. Legend has it that the Devil won’t let a hundredth tree grow. There are all sorts of cafes and restaurants in and around the village, so make sure you ask the host, Hannah, for some recommendations.

One well-behaved dog is allowed in one of the cottages for an additional fee, and your host can provide a free highchair and travel cot for little ones. All the bedrooms have their own en-suites, and while the ceiling is a bit low in one of them, there's plenty to make up for it. Outdoors, you'll find space for alfresco dining, along with a tennis court and a small stone gazebo on the expansive grounds, ideal for relaxing with a book.

Inside, the wood-burning stove is a welcome addition in the cooler months and flexible sleeping in the fourth bedroom makes this place ideal for any family or group of friends staying together.

The honey-coloured stone buildings, wisteria-adorned doorways and misty green hills of pretty Painswick couldn't get more Hollywood movie set if it tried. In fact, this town is so disarmingly attractive that it's known as the Queen of the Cotswolds. Well, adjust your crown because we've got a very princely stay right here for you. This 16th-century cottage is in the heart of the town, opposite the legendary 99 Yew Trees Church with its magnificent yew trees – can you take a wild guess how many?

Once inside you'll feel like a modern-day Henry VII thanks to exposed stonework, regal purple sofas, aged wooden beams and hefty wooden beds. In the second living room you'll find an honesty bar where your host has thoughtfully provided a selection of spirits – all donations made by you for the drinks you make are given to Emmaus, a local homelessness charity.

Outside you'll find the very private, very sunny courtyard garden is a delight, with lush, mature trees and immaculately manicured shrubs creating that Hampton Court Palace garden feel - albeit on a much smaller scale. It's a right royal escape.

The 99 Yew Trees

This quaint cottage is the quintessential Cotswolds hideaway. The outside is picture perfect: roses and honeysuckle creep up the walls, built in Cotswolds limestone alongside the classic mint green paintwork. Inside, the exposed stonework and wooden beams have been preserved, while each room is decorated to an exacting standard. The kitchen is a joy to cook in, with sunlight streaming through the window. Chic mid century furniture, rattan rugs and pops of plant life will have you taking notes. 

Upstairs, the pièce de resistance is the standalone bath in the master bedroom, replete with luxury toiletries, where you can soak after a day of exploring. The cottage is nestled in a quiet street in Painswick, a traditional, incredibly pretty Cotswolds village. You are within eight minutes walk of a handful of excellent country pubs, as well as shops and local amenities. The Painswick Rococo garden is a stunning, peaceful place to wander around, complete with a maze, blooming flowers and 18th century architecture, and can be reached in seventeen minutes on foot. There is also a market every Thursday morning in the village, where you can buy food and local wares.

Set over three floors, this historic home retains heaps of character, with exposed stone walls and ancient wood beams, alongside contemporary alterations like a sparkling new kitchen and a glass panel staircase. Cosy and smartly furnished, the living room's feature fireplace has a log burner for warming up on winter evenings and leads through to a stylish dining space with log storage built into the wall. Equipped with everything you could need to cook at home, the kitchen is lit by a huge ceiling lantern and a big window. Bedrooms are classic country style and we particularly love the freestanding bathtub in the main bathroom and the pretty bedroom on the top floor. The house shares a rear courtyard with some neighbouring properties but a large, private garden lies across the lane to the front.

Seemingly plucked straight from a fairytale, this secluded, idyllic thatched cottage, originally built in 1624, makes a romantic nesting place for couples looking for a rural escape. Cosy up on the velvet sofas by the wood-burning stove and relish in the home's comforting character. We love the stunning countryside views from the large garden – we can imagine sitting here on warm summer days with a glass of wine in hand. Another favourite of ours is the gorgeous bedroom with its characterful beams, chandelier and free-standing bath, the perfect place for a soak after a long countryside walk. There are several gastro pubs within a ten-minute drive, or if you fancy exploring further afield, Cirencester and Tetbury are under fifteen minutes in the car. Alternatively, marvel at over two thousand different species of trees at the stunning Westonbirt Arboretum, just over a twenty-minute ride.

Built back in the late 1920s, this cottage combines rustic features, modern conveniences and a smidgeon of rural eccentricity to make for a truly memorable stay. Inside, there are plenty of spots to gather the whole gang together, whether that's on the patchwork furnishings positioned by the wood-burning stove in the snug, sat around the dining room in the conservatory or sprawled out on the long grey corner sofa next to the eye-catching tree-trunk coffee table. Out the French doors, there's a large wraparound terrace with a barbecue and dining area, all facing a peaceful view of fields and forest. A gate at the end of the garden leads directly through this woodland and you can follow paths down to the beautiful Chalford Valley and the Thames and Severn Canal. A little closer to home — about ten minutes' walk — is the quaint market town of Minchinhampton, which has a market on the first Saturday of the month in the seventeenth-century hall and a country pub.

Located in the Cotswolds, this Georgian manor home enjoys a secluded spot, surrounded by the rolling hills and natural landscape of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Find acres of beautifully manicured grounds at your feet as you walk around and stop to smell the blooming flowers right after breakfast. 

As with breakfast and dinner, we recommend lunch al fresco under the vine-covered pergola before going back to sunbathing poolside. In the summer months, when a heat wave brings more potent temperatures your way, you might spend entire sun-drenched afternoons splashing in the crystal-clear waters of the private pool. 

With peace and tranquillity in spades, it’s unlikely that you’ll want to leave that behind, but the charming market town of Dursley is a must for a nice walk and a cup of coffee at the end of it.
