Since the 15th century, it's been carefully cared for by the same family, and its long list of notable visitors spans kings, queens and literary figures. You can find traces of heritage everywhere, from the traditional reception rooms (there are eight to choose from) to the stunning walled garden. This characterful cottage is perfect for a romantic getaway. Set among 80 acres of vineyards, woodland, and fishing lakes, with views as far as the eye can see from the private patio, you’ll feel like you’ve escaped to the country here. We love the unique features inside – like the circular-shaped lounge and curved staircase – and who could resist a relaxing soak in the Jacuzzi bathtub? Location-wise, you’re perfectly placed for hikes and bike rides in the surrounding countryside and for adventures further afield, the market town of Farnham is 11 miles away and historic Winchester is a 20-mile drive.

Beautiful inside and out. This villa's contemporary 1950's Italian-inspired interior gives way to sprawling Hampshire farmland. Watch sheep graze from in and around the private pool or ample outdoor seating. And let the peaceful atmosphere follow you inside by admiring the views through floor-to-ceiling windows. Location-wise, you're a little secluded, which is half the appeal, but Winchester isn't more than a few minutes away by car. Location and looks? You can see why this polished house made it into the collection. Plus, the addition of the private gym and fire pit is another nice touch here.

Tucked away in the in idyllic country village of Dogmersfield, this cosy lodge is the perfect setting for your next family getaway to rural Hampshire, boasting dreamy farmland views and snug interiors that are sure to make you feel at home the second you step over the threshold. 

If you’re anything like us, you won’t be able to get enough of the retro design details here. Turn on the radio and dance along to your favourite tunes on the kitchen tiles or sink into a leather armchair and warm yourself up by the old-school log burner. When it’s time to eat, gather everyone around the rustic dining table for a family meal or wander down to one of the local pubs for a traditional roast dinner and a refreshing pint of IPA. 

There are plenty of picturesque walking trails here, but if you’ve had your fill of being out and about, your cosy home from home has got you covered. Treat yourself to a cup of tea in the garden or make a beeline for the master bathroom and indulge in a relaxing bubble bath before turning in for the night. We don't know about you, but after a few days here, we'd never want to leave.

You'll find this 18th-century cottage in the heart of the South Downs, nestled on the edge of the illustrious Avington Park. Cosiness personified, the snug sitting room has a crackling wood-burner and squishy sofas that beckon for lounging, either with a glass of wine on chilly evenings or a good book on winter afternoons. A separate drawing room is a perfect spot to gather for family game nights, while the rustic kitchen has everything you'll need to rustle up Sunday roasts to enjoy around the dining table. Upstairs, the three comfortable bedrooms promise a good night's sleep. Our favourite is the third bedroom, with its exposed beams and vaulted ceilings – it has two double beds, making it a great option for kids. 

If you're in the mood to pick up the pace, Winchester is a fifteen-minute drive and has a wide array of shops, restaurants and museums. Or take it slow and enjoy a ramble through the countryside, stopping for a pint and some pub grub at the country inns.

Set on a sprawling vineyard estate covering over eighty acres of woodland and farmland, we found this charming open-plan home to be an ideal escape from the city. Being a loft flat, the sunlight pours in from skylights here, and the inclusion of a freestanding bathtub is a welcome addition after a hike. There's even a small terrace – perfect for enjoying a twilight glass of local wine, no? If you get itchy feet, you'll find South Downs National Park nearby, along with plenty of picturesque villages and towns.

This remarkable country mansion has had quite the tumultuous history. The estate dates back to 961 and is listed in the Domesday Book. The land was once home to a priory for the monks of Saint Swithun, until Henry VIII appropriated it for his royal courtiers. For ten years, King Charles II took up residence here with Nell Gwyn and their children, and it continued to pass through the hands of the nobility in the proceeding centuries, gaining a reputation as a hedonists' paradise during that time. After a faithful restoration in the latter half of the twentieth century, it's now open to guests looking for a truly inimitable stay. As you can imagine, there's history at every corner, from the painted ballroom ceiling to the portraits hanging in the hallway. The main living room is a sight to behold, with shelves packed full of books, ornate chandeliers and a grand piano sitting at one side, and the huge banqueting room is equally spectacular. The bedrooms are divided into eight apartments and cottages, many with their own kitchens and living rooms for added privacy. Outside, there are expansive grounds to take a morning constitutional, as well as the River Itchen running through with a boat ready for a paddle. The historic town of Winchester is only twelve minutes away in the car, while the first station on the heritage Watercress Railway line can be reached in under ten.

Royal Rumble

Spread out across three floors in this modern townhouse. Unique wooden furniture imported from India adds a touch of elegance to the minimalist, white decor. Get together for movie night in the modern living area (there’s Netflix on the smart TV). Breakfast can be made that bit brighter by throwing open the French doors and letting the sunshine in. Or, take the whole show out to the patio on a summer morning. If the kids tire of playing in the Wendy House in the garden, there’s a play park just around the corner. Locally you’ll find a convenience store, café and gym. Walk a little further for a major supermarket, pubs and restaurants. Or jump in your car (there are four private parking spaces at your disposal, you don’t have to worry about parking) and you’re in the bustling heart of Reading town centre in just 10 minutes.

Teak On White

Situated on the banks of the River Itchen, within 150 acres of pristine parkland, make yourself at home in this stunning Elizabethan-era stately home. You can count yourself among illustrious historical figures who've stayed here, including Charles II and George IV.

This apartment is blessed with plenty of natural light with windows that overlook Avington's medieval and main courtyards. Each of the individually decorated bedrooms features exposed oak beams, elegant antique furniture and vibrant floral prints that make them feel more contemporary. Meanwhile, the divine drawing and dining rooms are ideal for social evenings with up to six guests in total. 

With the surrounding parkland, it's easy to forget that Avington Park is just five miles outside England's ancient capital city of Winchester. Walk around the area by the cathedral and you'll discover exemplary eateries and the country's largest farmers' market in what is known locally as Hampshire’s foodie capital.

English Renaissance

Back in the 16th century, this manor home was managed by the Clerk of the Privy Seal to Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. And this apartment within the manor extolls all the extravagance of a Tudor era country retreat. Cross the Italian courtyard to enter and, stepping inside, you’ll find a charming living room adorned with oil paintings and set around an old fireplace. Original wood floors run from here into the kitchen, which has plenty of natural light from the sash window.

The jewel in this apartment’s crown has to be the master bedroom. Decked out in Tudor-style splendour, you can drift off to sleep in the hand-carved four-poster bed, swathed with satin curtains. An exposed brick fireplace would have welcomed weary travellers back in the day and the separate seating area is particularly atmospheric when lit by candlelight. Four further bedrooms all have their own character and style in midnight-blue, sage-green and coral, all packed with plenty of old-world charm.

There's nothing quite like escaping to the country for a few days and this converted stable barn is a million miles away from the stresses of day-to-day life. Bright, open and immaculate in every way, it's a place to relax, take a deep breath of fresh, country air and enjoy the company of your loved ones. Set on the owners' farm, and right next to their stables, you'll have a great view of the horses being fed each morning – something that's bound to excite the children. 

Anything but rustic, the interiors here are stylish and high-end, with wide-plank flooring and plenty of fabulous stripped back timber beams. The huge living space, surrounded on three sides by floor-to-ceiling windows, is the heart of the home, with squashy velvet sofas, a dining table for six and a delightful kitchen. Equipped with everything you could need, keen cooks will be in their element.

Set in the South Downs National Park, with views across the rolling hills, here you'll have your own private lawned garden area and you're welcome to explore the rest of the grounds. It's a twenty-minute walk into the pretty market town of Bishop's Waltham, with its shops and pubs, and don't miss a visit to the ruins of its historic abbey. And it's less than a half-hour drive to both Southampton and Portsmouth.

The Saddler's Rooms

Surrounded by the beauty of the South Downs, this converted barn is as contemporary as it is cosy. Outside, you'll have plenty of space to soak up the sunshine and admire the scenery. Head indoors, and you'll find a living space with beamed ceilings, a wood-burning stove, and an open-plan layout that makes socialising a dream. We think it'll suit families down to the ground, especially since one well-behaved pup is welcome to tag along. With Cheriton, Winchester, and Southampton all within driving distance, we expect there'll be plenty of adventures further afield, too.

Placing you right in the heart of Warfield, this home provides a practical yet cosy space from which to explore the Berkshire countryside. There are forest walks and cycle trails within easy reach, while it’s just a five-minute drive to the shops and restaurants of the Lexicon – a great option for family entertainment. At full occupancy, one guest will be sleeping on a pull-out bed which might not be ideal for longer stays, but it has all the other essentials you could need for everyday comfort. We like the little garden – a great spot for summer evening drinks.

With an outdoor swimming pool, a tennis court, and a games room, this countryside home has plenty to shout about. Located in the picturesque village of Hascombe, surrounded by hills and woodlands, you’re perfectly placed for hiking and birdwatching here. And while you’ll benefit from the rural location, when you want to stock up on supplies, the town of Godalming is just a ten-minute drive away. After a day exploring the surrounding villages, you’ll find plenty of sofa space in the two living rooms for relaxing. Or you can tuck into a sociable meal around the dining table, while enjoying countryside views. We think this home is a great choice for a memorable group getaway with family or friends.

 The Surrey Hideaway

Glamping never looked so good than at this charming cabin nestled within a wild-flower meadow of a 2500-acre family-owned farm estate. Don't be fooled by its unassuming aluminum exterior. Inside, the cabin is surprisingly spacious and lovingly converted by your hosts to provide all the creature comforts. Expect spotless interiors with a well-equipped traditional kitchen complete with a Belfast sink, a neat en-suite shower, and luxurious Egyptian linens on the king-sized bed and bunk beds for the kids. A welcome hamper brimming with local goodies, including milk, eggs, freshly baked bread, and marshmallows for those obligatory s'mores, will help to settle you in. And you'll bank a blissful night's sleep here – your only neighbours are the occasional peacock or deer strutting by. While away your days watching nature unfold outside on the terraces - the private elevated balcony looking out into surrounding woodland (a great spot for den building) is a beautiful place for a cuppa. Or don your hiking boots for a country walk – perhaps with a pit stop at the welcoming local pub (within walking distance) for a swift pint. Just be sure to make it home for dusk as the sun sets over the surrounding countryside. Placed in one of the UK's largest 'dark-sky' areas, there's much stargazing to be done while getting toasty beside the firepit.

If you're fancying a relaxing day in, get under the duvet to read a new book you picked up recently as you sip on a toasty cup of coffee. If weather permits, head out to the bench outdoors to dine alfresco with a hearty meal, washed down with a sumptuous glass of red – or sparkling bubbly.

Wander the streets of Marlow to see what you can find – there's a gorgeous Vietnamese restaurant nearby as well as a great selection of rustic pubs to unwind in as you enjoy a pint or two. A short drive takes you to the verdant Higginson Park where you get a fantastic view of the river and is a lovely spot for a picnic.

Positioned just one mile away from Gunwharf Quays and its outlet shopping, an abundance of shops, eateries and the cinema – there's plenty to keep you occupied when staying in this part of Portsmouth. After a day of shopping or relaxing on the beach, complete your quintessential British seaside experience by picking up some fresh fish and chips to serve up at the dining table, or if the weather is being kind – at the alfresco dining area in the garden.

This address might look effortlessly stylish on the surface, but look a little closer and you'll find that all the home comforts are present and correct. In the living room, for instance, there's a log-burner that you can get crackling while you loll about on the plush sofas facing the warmth. Up in the master bedroom — itself painted in a sultry tone of navy blue — there's an eye-catching copper bathtub that will have you scheduling a long uninterrupted soak into your itinerary. The rest of the house is dotted with house plants — especially in the light and airy kitchen-dining room — but if you want a bit more horticulture, head out into the private patio space, which is lined with flourishing beds and potted foliage. There's plenty of seating out here for taking full advantage of bursts of unseasonable weather, as well as a barbecue in case you're truly lucky. Even better is the fact that Chichester's main landmarks are within such easy walking distance. The Cathedral takes five minutes to reach, as does the town's castle.

One of a collection of three cottages on a thirteen-acre working farm in West Sussex, this home is nowhere near as rustic as these details might suggest. Step behind the front door and you'll find an interior that's contemporarily styled with a few quirky touches.

The stark white walls and sleek tiling make for a blank canvas against which the colourful cushions and hand-painted kitchen chairs really pop off. As well as that, the modern grey kitchen and pristine bathrooms are a world away from the back-to-basics country cottages that pepper the map in these parts – the rolltop bathtub in particular is sure to make a lot of guests very happy.

When the weather's on your side, there's a private outdoor space with an alfresco table and barbecue, but it's also lovely to wander about the shared parts of the site. The hosts run a private stud and breed native ponies, so if you're lucky, you might see a foal or two during your stay.

The home is blessed when it comes to location, sitting almost equidistantly between South Downs National Park and the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – as you might imagine, there's a wealth of walking routes to embark upon that start straight from the farm or just a short drive away. The seaside isn't too far away, either – you can get over to Worthing in just over half an hour in the car.

She obviously has a great eye for design, as her palette of delicious apricot and duck egg blue stylishly updates this vintage cottage into not just a twenty-first-century home, but a home with charm and character. There are plenty of thoughtful touches we found exquisite, from soft dressing gowns to the complementary breakfast hamper – and everything, from Egyptian cotton bedding to the plush sofas, is of boutique hotel quality. The hosts are attentive, meticulously committed to making sure your every whim is met. All in all, this cosy country hideaway is perfect for city escapes, with nearby the great beaches of the Jurassic coast, the New Forest, the National Trust property of Kingston Lacey, cities like Salisbury or Portsmouth and traditional seaside in Bournemouth. And while it feels like one of a kind, a twin lodge and two maisonettes in a neighbouring cottage are also available, so you can bring your friends too (although you might want to keep this little secret to yourself).
