Seaside village life is on your doorstep at this Yorkshire cottage nestled away in charming Hinderwell and just one mile from the shores of Port Mulgrave. 

From the outside, this period home is as pretty as a picture, and inside, things only get better. Every corner of the cottage feels restful and considered. Sophisticated warm neutrals keep everything oh-so-classy, while houseplants and botanical print textiles bring pops of colour and a flash of modernity. With a wood-burning stove to hunker down beside and storybook armchairs and window seats for afternoon lolls with the papers, it’s a delightful place to be, whatever the weather brings.

But on fine days, it’s outside chasing the sun between the front and rear garden terraces where you’ll want to be. Get together at the bistro table with morning coffees to watch village life go by, then head into the lawned garden later for evening drinks and barbecues.

Whether you're stretched out on the sofa, playing board games at the dining table, or preparing dinner in the kitchen, the open interior layout is perfect for spending valuable time together without feeling as though you're all on top of one another. If you crave salt-tinged air and sand between your toes, we can't think of a better place to call home. In fact, Yorkshire's rocky coastline is practically on your doorstep – and it's all yours to admire from the window in the lounge.

Inspired by the surrounding scenery, each room here has oodles of seaside curios to admire – that is, if you can tear your gaze away from the view. The living area couldn't be cosier, especially with the fire roaring, your favourite show on the telly and a steaming mug of tea at the ready. On sunny days, the small patio is ideal for an alfresco tipple or two, but even better is the sumptuous roll-top bathtub in the main bedroom – what's more relaxing than ending the day with a soak in the bubbles and a glass of wine in hand?

Wrapped in the North Yorkshire hills, there are scenic walks across the dramatic rolling moors whichever way you turn, or head for the sandy shores and bustling harbour of Staithes, just a twenty-minute walk away (or three-minute drive). Within its winding cobbled streets, you'll find bustling pubs, shops, art galleries, and of course, all the fish and chips you could muster. Spend the day at the sheltered sandy beach shell combing and rock pooling, take to the waters from the village for a boat jaunt to Whitby, or try out a fishing tour. Just be sure to make it home with plenty of time to switch on the hot tub and relax in the bubbles under the stars – there's no better way to finish a day. Inside the home, the barn's original exposed gable ceilings have been expertly restored to create an open, lofty feel to each pristine room. We're particularly fond of the barn doors, painted a dashing shade of red and reimagined into picture windows, opening out to reveal glimpses of green landscapes from nearly every room.

If you’ve been looking for a sign to explore the North Yorkshire coast, then, hello, here it is. This home, set only a stone’s throw from Whitby, has the advantage of an ideal location on its side. Close enough to drive to Robin Hoods Bay, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, and the North Yorkshire National Park and Moors, it's still far enough away from any sort of bustle that it feels secluded. So grab a coffee pre-dawn and sit out on the terrace as the sun breaks over the horizon. 

Even with the doors open, it's still peaceful enough here to kick back with a good romance novel and glass of wine. Although, you might want to carpe diem and wander out to the beach whenever you spot a ray of sunshine, because Runswick Bay has been recognised by The Times as one of Britain's top fifty beaches. Paddle board, surf, and splash to your heart’s content before finding a spot that serves fresh seafood. Once you've wandered about this home nestled away in the North Yorkshire countryside for the first time, it probably won't come as a surprise to learn that it was once a hotel. The vast size of the building and its grounds partially give the game away, but there's also something about how the communal areas are arranged, especially the pool table and bar that make it an especially sociable space.

You'll also get a sense of the home's heritage pretty quickly as well. Located on a farm that dates back to the 18th century, there's a strong rustic charm throughout the interior, from the wooden ceiling beams and stone archways to the open fireplace that's wonderful to retire next to after a long bout in the great outdoors. 

Speaking of which, there's a whole host of amenities on the grounds for when the forecast is being kind to you. As well as a large lawn and lots of equipment for playing games, there's plenty of seating for alfresco feasts, as well as a hot tub that's an idyllic spot for a nightcap, especially once the stars are out in the sky.

In the local area, there's a wealth of attractions to be discovered, from the Victorian spa town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea just two-and-a-half miles away to the Cleveland Way National Trail, which can be reached on foot and rewards those that follow the path with views of the dramatic coastal landscape.

If you’d like a peaceful stay in the Yorkshire countryside, while still being within easy reach of the fun-filled Yorkshire coast, this home offers the perfect sanctuary. Located in the little village of Brotton, just a short drive from Saltburn-by-the-Sea, this characterful cottage has loads of traditional features that make it feel homely and quaint, such as the exposed beam ceilings, ornate wooden furniture and chintzy soft furnishings. Thanks to its prime coastline location and eclectic history, Whitby has been drawing in tourists for hundreds of years and if you're tempted to pay a visit, this home is a great base from which to explore the Yorkshire town.

Rather ironically, it's what lies outside that makes this apartment special – gaze out through the windows and you're treated to a sublime view of the North Sea. There's also a private balcony just off the kitchen in case you fancy starting the day with coffee and the sun on your skin – can't we be optimistic?

There's also a lot to like about the interiors, too. The design in the living room is a quirky mix of vintage and contemporary, as seen with the tan leather sofas sitting underneath a grand chandelier. You'll find the kitchen to be decently enough sized for bouts of home cooking and there are no complaints about the minimalist bedrooms, either.

So, what's there to do nearby? Well, quite a lot as it happens. West Cliff Beach and the promenade are about five minutes' walk from the front door, while the famed Whitby Abbey and 199 steps are just over twenty minutes away on foot, crossing the River Esk in the process.
