A great spot for keen walkers and beach lovers, it's just a few minutes drive to the coast (the beach is 2 miles away) and even less to the castle itself. Set in a quiet farming hamlet, you'll have peace and quiet, as well as the local amenities, pubs and cafes just a few minutes away.

For a traditional seaside holiday, you couldn't be much closer to the water's edge than this smart mews cottage. Set in the historic harbour area of the quaint North Northumberland coastal village of Seahouses, the beach is just a stone's throw away.

Inside, everywhere feels bright and breezy, just how we like our coastal homes to be. Kick off sandy shoes in the cloakroom and make your way into the dazzling white open-plan living space where soft blue accents unite the space and remind us the sea is never far away.

Guests love how spaced apart the bedrooms feel across two floors. Form an orderly queue for first dibs on that swoon-worthy bedroom with a separate dressing area and deep bath for an evening soak. Though that immaculate second king-sized bedroom with a Juliet balcony to steal a glimpse of the sea is an impressive consolation prize. And while there's no outdoor space to speak of, we don't think you'll mind with the harbour and beach so close.

When it's time for a dose of sea air, nip to the end of the road, and you can watch the boats bob into shore – made even more magical at sunset. Then take a mosey into the centre for a dose of British seaside nostalgia with fish and chips at the beach. Or hop on a boat trip and journey to Farne Islands – it's Attenborough's favourite place, don't you know.

Beadnell Bay, only a few miles north, is great for sailing, windsurfing and scuba diving too. This home has sea views from the doorstep and access to a small patio area which is part of a communal courtyard shared with other neighbours. Inside, there’s a wood burner for cosy nights in, but at full capacity, there’s only one bathroom for five guests.

Spread across a single floor, the colour palette of muted greys and whites is bright and inviting, while there's a wealth of surface space in the sleek kitchen for when you want to whip up seafood banquets. The designers haven't completely done away with rustic cosiness, though – what could be a cuter way of ending a productive day than gathering around the crackling flames by the living room's stove?

As already mentioned, the town's harbour is just a three-minute walk away and it's possible to head out on nautical expeditions, including diving and trips to the bird-spotting hotspot, Farne Islands. If you prefer to stay on land, there are walking routes and scenic points aplenty in the surrounding Northumberland Coast AONB, too.

Bamburgh Beach and its seafront castle are just a short stroll away from this home. Days spent lounging on the sand are definitely a given, but, if you'd rather enjoy a laid-back afternoon at home, the garden is the perfect spot. A timber playset is available for children, a lawn is great for furry friends, and outdoor seating lets parents relax with a refreshing drink. We think the nautical-inspired interiors are lovely, too. The log burner keeps things cosy during the cooler months and the soaker bath is just what you need after a day exploring the Northumbrian coast. The Northumberland Coast is home to 14th-century castles, vast sandy beaches, rare wildlife, and dramatic views. And in the aptly named Seahouses, this quaint, coastal settlement is home to this gorgeous abode. Just an eleven-minute walk from the local harbour (from where you can take a boat trip out to spot puffins and lighthouses on the Farne Islands), this charming stone cottage is every bit the traditional, English home you’d expect. However, the interiors are beautifully modern, tasteful and creative. We love the juxtaposition of rustic elements like the wood-burning stove and antique sideboard, with industrial-style lampshades and vibrant art prints on the walls. The skylights on the sloped ceilings bring in that seaside sunshine, but equally make a great spot for stargazing. The private patio is another great location for staring at the Milky Way – of course not before a fresh grill on the barbecue, followed by a few alfresco gin and tonics. But if you'd rather venture out, there's a dog-friendly pub just over the road, while the centre of Seahouses with its array of shops, pubs and restaurants is just a five-minute walk from your front door.

Dorian Grey Cottage

This home is a lesson in not being misled by first impressions. Yes, it's a stone cottage sitting in the middle of a farm, but step behind the front door and you'll find an interior that's as bright and contemporary as any.

Much of this is down to the bountiful amounts of natural light that streams through the glass doors and roof lantern, although the stark white walls and reflective wooden floors help, too. As well as a long kitchen finished in a muted grey, there's a stylish collection of furnishings dotted about the space, too.

However, it's not just easy on the eye. The wood-burning stove is lovely to have crackling away in the background during the chillier months, but there's a southeast-facing garden complete with a lounge and large lawn should the weather gods be smiling down on you during your visit.

If that's the case, you're spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoor adventures in the nearby Northumberland Coast Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty, from Dunstanburgh Castle fifteen minutes' drive away to the sands of Embleton Bay only ten minutes away.

With an idyllic setting with a balcony overlooking the sea – this holiday cottage is a great find – we love the stunning sea vistas. The kitchen/dining room has a door to a west-facing balcony too, great for sunsets. It is just a minute's walk from Seahouses' commercial hub with all of its shops, restaurants and bars. Or from the harbour, you can get a boat to the beautiful Farne Islands or make use of the Ocean Leisure Club (membership is included while staying at this home, but a small entrance fee applies).

Bamburgh’s location on the Northumberland Coast makes it splendid for a trip out on the water, just as much as fish and chips on the shore. Between the dunes and the green perimeter of this tiny town, your house sits pretty at just over half a mile from Bamburgh Beach and its famed castle. But if you choose sea over the land, you’ll be well looked after – this town is home of Victorian maritime heroine Grace Darling.

While this fabulous holiday home is certainly on land, there are still nods to the coast. Grey wooden slats on the exterior are reminiscent of a traditional wooden rowboat, while the front door even features a perfectly round porthole. You can admire it from the outside while sitting on your patio with a chilled bottle of fizz, or on the lush lawn surrounded by a picnic and a few G&Ts. Inside, two cosy lounges offer space for both grown-ups and youngsters to unwind – one even has a collection of board games, DVDs, and an XBOX 360 for rainy days. Head outside and you'll find a sunny garden overlooking the Cheviot Hills – perfect for pups and kids to let loose. A ten-minute drive away is Bamburgh Castle, making this an ideal spot to explore the Northumberland Coast.
