And in the aptly named Seahouses, this quaint, coastal settlement is home to this gorgeous abode. Just an eleven-minute walk from the local harbour (from where you can take a boat trip out to spot puffins and lighthouses on the Farne Islands), this charming stone cottage is every bit the traditional, English home you’d expect. However, the interiors are beautifully modern, tasteful and creative. We love the juxtaposition of rustic elements like the wood-burning stove and antique sideboard, with industrial-style lampshades and vibrant art prints on the walls. The skylights on the sloped ceilings bring in that seaside sunshine, but equally make a great spot for stargazing. The private patio is another great location for staring at the Milky Way – of course not before a fresh grill on the barbecue, followed by a few alfresco gin and tonics. But if you'd rather venture out, there's a dog-friendly pub just over the road, while the centre of Seahouses with its array of shops, pubs and restaurants is just a five-minute walk from your front door.

Set in the quintessential seaside town of Seahouses, its setting is bang-on. Take a mosey into the centre (a mere 0.8 mile walk away) for a dose of British seaside nostalgia with fish and chips at the beach followed by a beachcombing amble. Treat the family to a game of crazy golf or rock pooling. Or hop on a boat trip and journey to Farne Islands – it's Attenborough's favourite place, don't you know.

Back home, the Scandi-inspired interiors of this chic home feel like a dose of fresh sea air after busy days on the beach. Marble accents and butter-soft leather armchairs add a dash of luxury, while abstract sea-inspired prints subtly remind us the sea is never far away. Speaking of exploring, you're only a five-minute drive from Alnwick, a charming market town with a famous castle. Drive ten minutes in the opposite direction and you'll hit the Northumberland coast – both Boulmer and Alnmouth are great options if you fancy a day by the seaside.

Newton-by-the-Sea is dotted with traditional cream-washed cottages, and this charming abode is no different. Inside, the classic yet contemporary interior makes a lovely home-from-home, with polished hardwood floors, bright walls, a gas-burning fireplace, and cosy furnishings. We love the soft blue and sandy tones, exuding comfort while drawing inspiration from the coastal location. And if that doesn’t get you embracing being beside the seaside, the cute beach-themed artwork will. 

Every space has been designed with sociable families in mind. It’s open and inviting, with a beautiful kitchen that’s perfect for gathering around the kitchen island, preparing meals together as a group. The conservatory is another bright and homely space. Situated in a Grade II-listed building dating back to 1878, we can't help but swoon over this Alnwick apartment. It doesn't lack character, that's for sure – vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and antique knick-knacks like typewriters and old books are in abundance. We think it's the perfect blend of old and new, and nowhere is a better example of that than the open-plan living area. Bright and roomy, there's more than enough space here to spread out and get comfortable, whether you're tucking into a feast around the table or snuggling up in front of the fire. Cooking is anything but a chore in the glossy kitchen, and on rainy days, head up to the mezzanine for board games and billiards. There's also a communal garden for the summer months, where you can sip tea in the sunshine or cocktails at twilight.

And the location is excellent, too. Alnwick is as charming as they come, sprinkled with history and magic – no wonder they filmed Harry Potter here. Spend afternoons wandering down the cobbled lanes, popping in and out of the independent shops, cafes and bookstores that line the high street. The famous Alnwick Castle is just a short walk away, while the Northumberland coast is a thirteen-minute drive. In the evenings, forgo the home-cooking for a pint, delicious pub grub and live music at one of the cosy inns in town.

While you have the option to head to the city for the day, you can also stay put, enjoying moorland views and hill walks — Berwick-upon-Tweed and its coastline is only half an hour's drive away, too. The recently refurbished interior is a lovely place to return to after time spent out in the elements, with comfy furnishings positioned around the log burner sure to have you feeling warm and toasty again. Away from it all, yet within walking distance of the village pub, this place really has to be one of our favourites in this neck of the woods. A converted farm worker's cottage, it's been lovingly updated to create a modern and comfortable stay. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. On sunny days, open the French doors to the pretty garden and sit outside on the terrace – the sunsets here are amazing. Keen cooks will love the high-spec kitchen, which flows easily into the dining area and living room so everyone can socialise. Each bedroom has a bathroom and we love the master bedroom's view and its lovely freestanding bath. Here you'll be in prime walking country, with hikes from your doorstep. And it's just a ten-minute drive to the market town of Hexham.

Steeped in history, this grand yet homely castle makes for a remarkably atmospheric base in the Scottish Borders. The seat of Clan Kerr, this 15th-century castle is known as Scotland’s frontier fortress. It’s set amid enchanting forests overlooking the River Jed, 2 miles south of Jedburgh. Some guests will sleep in the ground-floor wing, while others will fight over the romantic turret bedrooms. A wood-panelled turret library in the southwest tower is full of books and curiosities, and there are portraits of King James VI and the Kerr family dotted throughout the castle. For a real taste of historic Scotland, you won’t do better than this castle.
