A charming little cottage in the Oxfordshire countryside, it's so idyllic that House & Garden magazine deemed it worthy of gracing their pages. With exposed beams, original flagstone flooring and a reassuringly solid oak dining table, your host has ensured not to lose that quaint cottage feel by bringing everything into the twenty-first century. After kicking your boots off in the utility room, the cosy sitting room with its inviting fireplace and antique furniture makes for a lovely spot to warm up after bracing winter walks. Like any kitchen with an Aga, its warmth attracts people like moths to a flame and you'll soon be moving people out of your way as you look for a clear space to chop, while they chat. The upstairs bedrooms offer endless views over the stunning cottage garden and rolling fields towards the Thames. The children's room comes equipped with lots of books, while there's another small single for gran or grandad. Head out with the children and follow the footpaths leading from the cottage gate down to the lock and watch the riverboats or head to Tadpole Bridge for a well-deserved pint at the Trout.

This small but perfectly formed shepherd’s hut is a real slice of country life. With honeyed stone walls and a Grade II listed status, this bronze South West Award-winning traditional stone cottage is quintessentially Cotswolds. The exposed beams and inglenook fireplaces showcase the building’s considerable heritage (it dates back to 1670), but you’ll find plenty of modern comforts here, as well as cosy styling that favours neutral tones and natural textures. We love that it’s a home for all seasons — stride out on blustery walks in the winter months, before coming back to underfloor heating, a wood burner and thick goose down duvets. In the summer, the British countryside is arguably at its best and here you get access to a large birdsong-filled garden with plenty of shady spots for a gin and tonic. Stargazers are in luck here as there are no streetlights in the local village of Southrop and the Milky Way shines extra bright. And of course, what would a country getaway be without a nearby pub? The Swan can be reached in about three minutes' walk, although the Victoria Inn takes half an hour in case you fancy earning your pint.

This luxurious retreat may be nestled away in the countryside, but there's nothing twee about its interiors. Each of the one hundred homes discreetly spaced apart around the six clear water lakes and 650 acres of woodlands and meadows boasts eye-popping finishes designed by Kelly Hoppen, Jade Jagger, and Kate Moss, to name a few. 

Over in the vast made-for-action kitchen, cooking is a joy with every gadget going. But if you fancy a night off, why not hire a private chef for an evening of fine dining. Upstairs, you'll find the most ginormous main bedroom suite with a super king-sized bed, a private lounge area, and an ensuite sauna - yes, really. While out on the deck, there are memorable 180-degree views of the surrounding lake to soak up from the stylish seating and dining area – best enjoyed with a glass of something crisp in hand and the barbecue fired up. 

When it's time to embrace the great outdoors, how does paddle-boarding, kayaking, rowing, fishing, and sailing off your own private jetty sound? And there's tennis and cricket courts, a golf net, man-made beach, and a five-star spa on the estate to keep you busy, too. And if you fancy a change of scene, the pretty market town of Lechlade-on-Thames is just a five-minute drive away for a hefty dose of Cotswold charm. However, you'll need some serious powers of persuasion to convince anyone to leave this place.

We don't think it's an over-exaggeration to say that this has to be one of the most remarkable homes in our collection. Perched on the banks of Huntsman Lake, you're never short of an exquisite view because the whole exterior is made of glass. Yes, that's right. The unique property was designed by the Dutch architectural firm Mecanoo and is full of luxuries and surprises.

Head up to the roof, for instance, where you'll find a huge terrace complete with a garden and a sweeping panorama of a further three lakes. Closer to the water, there's another decking area where you can relax on one of the loungers and watch the local birdlife.

The only place in the house which isn't treated to sights of the jaw-dropping scenery is down in the basement. Why head down here, you ask? Well, there's a nine-seater cinema, bar area, Jacuzzi, sauna and full-size snooker table. That's why.

Back upstairs, the interior design does its best to demand your attention against fierce opposition and succeeds at times with the bold modern artwork, designer furniture and staircase carved from a 500-year old tree from Slovenia. The kitchen is a thing of beauty too, with both tandoori and pizza ovens, plus a wine fridge — which the concierge will fill up upon request.

In a home that constantly manages to surprise, the fact that it has excellent eco-credentials is another string to its bow. A combination of an air thermal heat pump, solar panels, heat recovery systems and triple-glazed glass means that energy consumption is low, while the wood on the exterior uses the Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban for waterproofing, rather than chemicals. Venture outside in the summer and you can hire a boat or go wild swimming in the lake, or book a go on the zip-line and experience the landscape from a thrilling perspective.

Although you might think that it would be hard to beat the immediate surroundings when it comes to looks, the Cotswolds AONB can be reached in ten minutes' drive and has some pretty swoon-worthy views itself. The town of Cirencester only takes twenty minutes to reach in the car, too.

Time For Reflection

After many years unoccupied, this former barn was treated to a complete revamp in the late 2010s. Today, a remarkable home awaits guests visiting rural Oxfordshire. Huge glass walls and stark white walls mean that the space feels immediately bright and inviting, while there's a superb mix of modern touches and more homely furnishings — bold pieces of artwork and the sleek grey kitchen sit quite happily alongside deep red rugs and picnic baskets repurposed as coffee tables.

Out through the glass doors, there's a charming walled garden complete with a lawn, patio and neat plant beds. Bat boxes and an owl loft have also been incorporated into the property to help the local wildlife. If you fancy a little more nature-spotting, there are plenty of walking routes throughout the surrounding Blenheim Estate. The city of Oxford takes around twenty-five minutes to reach in the car, too.

A mesmerising location, impeccable interior design and plenty of exciting things going on in the locale – this strikingly modern lodge perched on the banks of Bowmoor Lake, in the edge of the Cotswolds, seems to have all the luck. The views of the water from the deck, from the private beach with fire pit or even just out through the floor-to-ceiling windows are soothing, but you can easily liven things up with some water sports or outdoor activities arranged by the surrounding resort, or a visit to its world-class spa for a pampering session.
