This is one of those homes for which first impressions can be deceiving. From the outside, the nineteenth-century stone exterior looks rather traditional, but the interior is a completely different story. Walls painted in a muted grey, wooden floors and striking monochrome portraits are as modern as they come, and the design works particularly well with the bountiful amounts of natural light from the bay windows. Pristinely designed it might be, but there's also a whole lot of fun to be had here, too. Out in the garden, there's a hot tub in which you can sit and take in the view of the Sound of Karrera. There's also a separate shed which doubles up as a games room, complete with tables for ping-pong, poker and pool. In the town of Oban, there are distilleries and seafood restaurants to visit, but as you can probably guess from the scenery, there are lots of coastal walks to embark upon too, including forty-five minutes to Ganavan Sands.

This splendidly restored Victorian house will whisk you away to another era. Designed by a prominent 19th-century Scottish architect, this place retains its original charm. We were stunned by the ornate plasterwork, massive fireplaces and antique furnishings. Wake up to a view of the shimmering waters of Loch Long and The River Clyde. Peek through the telescope in the lounge and see if you can spot the isle of Arran in the distance. Every care has been taken to make the place as kid-friendly as possible – from ensuring the sockets and fireplaces are covered to providing high-chairs and cribs. Your little ones will also find plenty of books, toys and a games console. You can sip a cuppa undistrubed, while the kids play make-believe in the grand rooms and sprawling garden. If you can tear yourself away, miles of stunning natural trails await you in nearby Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park. In the evening, stoke the logs in the fireplace, pour yourself a glass of fine Scotch whisky and make the most of your waterside abode.

A getaway for all seasons, this home offers a Scottish escape to remember. It's found on 25 acres of private woodland between the moor and Loch Sunart. Forage for chanterelles and berries, pick wildflowers – and make use of your host’s flower-arranging kit – while the kids run wild in the forest camp. It’s an incredible setting for an outdoorsy holiday, with wild swimming, biking, and kayaking all on the cards. The Scandinavian/Hebridean style indoors is cosy and comfortable, with a fire inside as well as a fire bowl outside. You can admire views across Loch Sunart to the Isle of Carna, Morvern, and Mull from the living room, main bedroom, and the decking and garden. There’s a bit of magic in a home like this. For adventures further afield, Sanna Bay's sandy beach is a forty-minute drive away.
