Found on a charming cobbled lane in the middle of Edinburgh's famous New Town, this apartment in a listed Georgian building has way more going for it other than its prime spot on the map. Inside, the palette of greys, blacks and dark wood give the interior the sort of character and warmth you envision from a home in the Scottish capital. Two large sash windows in the living space invite in natural light and there are several lavish touches in the interior design, from the ornate furnishings and the patterned wallpaper to the subway tile bathroom. There's a wide selection of restaurants to be found on the neighbouring Queen Street and George Street, while lots of the city's most famous attractions can be easily reached on foot — Edinburgh Castle takes just under a quarter of an hour, for instance.


A Sandstone Stay

Experience a stay like no other at this cosy Gothic castle, part of an unfinished design for Edinburgh’s first observatory. At the top of Calton Hill, you'll have some truly breathtaking views from this historical home. The National Gallery is next door and the rest of the city is a short walk away, easily making up for the lack of parking. It should be noted that the home's standout location does attract a number of tourists, so if you're looking for some peace and privacy it might not be for you. That said, the main bedroom enjoys an en-suite with a luxurious standalone bathtub, and there's outdoor seating to make the most of this stunning location.

This is a genuinely special home, with an abundance of character and sophistication, with everything finished to a high quality. The location was equally impressive, found on a quiet cobbled street just off a main busy road, within walking distance of the city centre. While the striking master bedroom came close, the living room was our favourite room in the home. It feels almost like an old school drawing room, but with an added comfort factor. There's also great attention to detail, such as the drawer of hot water bottles in the kitchen for those rainy Scottish evenings.

Tall corniced ceilings, wood floors and an abundance of light coming in through the sash windows create an instantly welcoming feel with chic, contemporary furnishings inviting you to make yourself at home. We love the living room’s large suede sofas that beckon relaxing evenings over a glass of wine by the period working fireplace, and the large kitchen bathed in natural light that’s ready to cater celebratory feasts aplenty. The three bedrooms, meanwhile, have each been carefully curated with a sophisticated touch and boast similarly large windows that give way to New Town views. We’re particularly fond of the main bedroom’s en-suite – a spa-like space with its rainfall shower and tempting tub, the latter providing the perfect end to a night with a glass of bubbly. 
With ample entertainment options, plenty of children’s equipment on hand, as well as a lavish amount of space in which to socialise or spend some quiet time alone, this is an ideal base for those looking to make the most out of their city stay.
Outside of your home, Calton Hill and its wide-sweeping views over Edinburgh is just a fifteen-minute walk away, as is Princes Street’s parade of shops. Edinburgh Castle is also easily walkable in twenty minutes, while charming Dean Village is twenty-five minutes away on foot.

This is one of those rare homes that demands your attention in every direction. Look out the floor-to-ceiling windows – or better still, step out the glass doors onto the terrace – and you're greeted with sublime views of the Scottish capital's renowned Georgian architecture and the slow-moving waters of the Firth of Forth on the horizon.

At the same time, the elegant interior design does a pretty good job of warranting closer inspection. We particularly like how the bare wooden floors and wealth of sleek surfaces work well with the copious amounts of natural light, as well as the fact that there's not just one, but two pianos – a baby grand in the living space and a slightly more compact version in the corridor. Elsewhere, there's a large kitchen island that's ripe for entertaining, a freestanding bathtub calling out for a long soak and exercise equipment in case you ever find yourself in need of a workout at any point.

We haven't even gotten around to the amenities that lie outside the glass doors, either. Although Edinburgh isn't known for its tropical temperatures, that doesn't mean it will be any less pleasant to luxuriate in the hot tub or dine on the alfresco table – perhaps with a coat on if needs be. Add into the mix a hammock perfect for a post-lunch snooze in the sun and you might just find you'll be spending more time outside than you anticipated.

Sitting in between the city's Old and New Towns, you're also in an excellent position to explore many of Edinburgh's most celebrated landmarks. The Royal Mile, for instance, is only five minutes' walk away and you can continue up the road to the castle in another ten. The Scottish National Gallery is only seven minutes away on foot, as well.

Pour a glass of wine or mix up a cocktail at the bespoke kitchenette and relax. The next day, do some shopping on George Street and Princes Street, both are a one-minute walk away. Or for a spot of culture, the Scottish Gallery of Modern Art and the Scottish National Gallery are eight minutes on foot, while the Museum on the Mound and the National Portrait Gallery are both an eleven-minute stroll. Edinburgh International Conference Centre is just a three-minute wander, and the University of Edinburgh, the Old Town and the Royal Mile are all under a twenty-five-minute walk. You can't visit the city without seeing the iconic Edinburgh Castle – it's a twelve-minute amble, while St Giles' Cathedral and St James Quarter are a fifteen-minute saunter.
