You'll find it off the vibrant Grassmarket, an easy walk to historic Old Town and Princes Street Gardens. Shops, restaurants, pubs, landmarks – you name it, chances are you can reach it on foot. Back home, the design is more modern, but it still feels cosy. The kitchen is well-equipped for home cooking, while the living area features a sofa bed – just note the fee for linens. Even without castle views, we think it's a comfortable, practical option in an unbelievable location.

History buffs will love climbing to the top of Edinburgh Castle (a ten-minute stroll), fashionistas can shop 'till they drop on Princes St (ten minutes on foot), while ramblers can enjoy a stroll through Salisbury Crags (walkable in half an hour). With cosy cafes, lively pubs, independent shops and mouthwatering eateries all on your doorstep, as far as locales go, you can't do much better.

We're into the Scandi-inspired interiors of this Old Town apartment, but we love its location even more. Placed just a stone's throw from the Royal Mile, it's hard to imagine a better setting.

Walk in the footsteps of Scotland's kings and queens with a visit to Edinburgh Castle (six minutes on foot). Marvel at the natural history wonders of Scotland at the National Museum, just across the street. Then see mother nature up close and personal with a hike up Edinburgh's volcano, Arthur's Seat (forty-minute walk) - the views over the city are awe-inspiring.

When thoughts turn to food, you'll be well fed and watered in historical Grassmarket (five minutes on foot). The broad, open square is lined with buzzy restaurants and bars, including the city's oldest pub for a wee whiskey dram or three.

This top floor apartment on historic George Street has the best seat in the house, and we're not just talking about the cow print armchair. From one window you have an unrestricted view of Edinburgh Castle, the iconic fortress that brings inquisitive travellers to the capital. From another, the port district of Leith, and the beaches Edinburgh is not necessarily famous for, but definitely should be. Though it’s not just about the views – the living room's curves, vintage photography and statement armchairs ensure a stay in style. Breakfasting below the huge, arched window in the sunlight is another big plus. Heading out, the New Town is on your doorstep and with it, the buzz of a city you'll never want to leave.

Sea And Planets

With the look of a stylish speakeasy, this cute red-hued studio won our hearts. We love the features here, such as the shuttered sash windows, the floral wallpaper and the chic prints and mirrors. Pour a glass of wine and relax on the plush armchairs. Or have a rest on the comfy bed in the bedroom with its navy wood panelling before heading out to explore in the late afternoon.

The location is fantastic. George Street and Princes Street are a one-minute walk, so that's shopping covered. For culture lovers, the Scottish National Gallery and Scottish Gallery of Modern Art are an eight-minute saunter, while the National Portrait Gallery and the Museum on the Mound are both an eleven-minute stroll. The iconic Edinburgh Castle, St Giles' Cathedral, St James Quarter and the Old Town are all a fifteen-minute or less walk from your door as well. There's an array of eateries and bars nearby too, so this place is the ideal bolthole for a couple, solo traveller or business person looking to be in the heart of the city's action.

And when it's time to escape the crowds for a while, head to Edinburgh's volcano, Arthur's Seat (forty minutes on foot), for the very best views over the city – it's worth the hike.
