Sitting within one of Edinburgh's many Georgian buildings, this loft apartment doesn't have the period features you might expect from the handsome exterior, but it's still easy on the eye nevertheless. Ideally, it could do with another bathroom, but that's nitpicking really. One thing we especially like is that the neighbourhood is a little more residential than the touristy centre, but you're still within walking distance of many of the city's attractions – the castle and old town are both around half an hour's walk, for instance.

This apartment is just a short stroll from The Meadows, perfect for a picnic or for the children to play. Holyrood Park and the famous Royal Mile are also within walking distance, as are many eateries, including Michelin Star restaurants. Housed in a traditional stone Victorian building, you’ll find period features such as bay windows inside this home. We should note that the third bedroom is off the main bedroom and is a small box room with a single bed, but it’s okay for a child. This place is ideal for a family looking to enjoy all that this wonderful city has to offer.

In truth, we don't think the current photographs do this Victorian-era property justice (we’re working on that). But if you can look past this, you’ll find a practical apartment perfectly suited to a working or family stay. Each double bedroom has a good-sized desk, and the dining kitchen has everything you need for family mealtimes. Set along a leafy residential street, this is the University of Edinburgh’s neck of the woods. You can walk to all the must-sees from here, including The Meadows, Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, Princes Street, and the list goes on.

With this Buckstone cottage, you get the best of both worlds. Edinburgh city centre and all its landmarks are only a twenty-minute drive away, but you'll have excellent walks, the Seven Hills viewpoint, and leafy parks practically on your doorstep. Better still, a private front garden here will surely be a hit when the sun is out. It's the perfect spot to wind down in the evenings, though the light-filled living area is also a fine place to relax. The bedrooms are a little snug, but we think it does the job for a laid-back stay on the outskirts of the city.

If you’re in search of simplicity and comfort in a fantastic location, look no further than this apartment. Tucked in Edinburgh’s New Town, it’s less than a ten-minute walk to iconic sights like Edinburgh Castle and you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to local restaurants, cafes and shops. Just over a twenty-minute walk from the heart and soul of the Old Town – Edinburgh Castle – the New Town has quite a different vibe. You’ll find Georgian architecture nearly everywhere you turn, and historic tenement buildings lining the streets as you head towards Canonmills. While these stone structures might look similar from the outside, we can guarantee you'll find eclectic homes within. This flat is no exception. The owner is a local artist, whose creative interior design choices are evident throughout. You’ll find her charming, abstract artwork on display in various rooms, as well as brightly-coloured walls, quirky tablecloth prints, antique furniture, and unique lamps on ornate cabinets. Our favourite spot has to be the lounge – this yellow room is full of character and old-world charm. Light up the fire and gather everyone round for a board game on a rainy day in this sumptuous space. Or at dusk, it could equally serve as a plush pad for an impromptu whisky-tasting session. While you sip on single malts, have the host arrange for a private chef to come over and handle dinner. You are on holiday after all.

Moments away, you'll find whisky bars serving over 200 different drams, fully kilted pipers, and – in August, anyway – the magical chaos of the Edinburgh Festival. This apartment offers brief respite from all that, kitted out with a flat-screen TV for binge-watching, a generous kitchen corner for preparing tipsy laird pudding and a squishy red leather sofa to eat it on. Downstairs is the famous World's End pub – grab a pint and people-watch for a while.

Experience a stay like no other at this cosy Gothic castle, part of an unfinished design for Edinburgh’s first observatory. At the top of Calton Hill, you'll have some truly breathtaking views from this historical home. The National Gallery is next door and the rest of the city is a short walk away, easily making up for the lack of parking. It should be noted that the home's standout location does attract a number of tourists, so if you're looking for some peace and privacy it might not be for you. That said, the main bedroom enjoys an en-suite with a luxurious standalone bathtub, and there's outdoor seating to make the most of this stunning location.

Sitting at the foot of Edinburgh Castle, if this apartment isn’t the definition of a central setting, we don't know what is. You'll find it off the vibrant Grassmarket, an easy walk to historic Old Town and Princes Street Gardens. Shops, restaurants, pubs, landmarks – you name it, chances are you can reach it on foot. Back home, the design is more modern, but it still feels cosy. The kitchen is well-equipped for home cooking, while the living area features a sofa bed – just note the fee for linens. Even without castle views, we think it's a comfortable, practical option in an unbelievable location.
