This top floor apartment on historic George Street has the best seat in the house, and we're not just talking about the cow print armchair. From one window you have an unrestricted view of Edinburgh Castle, the iconic fortress that brings inquisitive travellers to the capital. From another, the port district of Leith, and the beaches Edinburgh is not necessarily famous for, but definitely should be. Though it’s not just about the views – the living room's curves, vintage photography and statement armchairs ensure a stay in style. Breakfasting below the huge, arched window in the sunlight is another big plus. Heading out, the New Town is on your doorstep and with it, the buzz of a city you'll never want to leave.

This is a genuinely special home, with an abundance of character and sophistication, with everything finished to a high quality. The location was equally impressive, found on a quiet cobbled street just off a main busy road, within walking distance of the city centre. While the striking master bedroom came close, the living room was our favourite room in the home. It feels almost like an old school drawing room, but with an added comfort factor. There's also great attention to detail, such as the drawer of hot water bottles in the kitchen for those rainy Scottish evenings. 

The Gilderoy

If you're a couple, solo traveller or business professional looking to be within walking distance of the majority of Edinburgh's main attractions, then this chic studio is perfect. George Street and Princes Street are a one-minute stroll away, while Edinburgh International Conference Centre is just a three-minute saunter, and the University of Edinburgh, the Old Town and the Royal Mile are all under a twenty-five-minute walk. For culture lovers, the Scottish National Gallery and Scottish Gallery of Modern Art are eight minutes on foot, while the National Portrait Gallery and the Museum on the Mound are both an eleven-minute wander. No trip to the city would be complete without seeing Edinburgh Castle – it's a twelve-minute walk, and St Giles' Cathedral and the St James Quarter shopping centre are all within a fifteen-minute walk too.

After a busy day, head back to this studio housed in a grand period building. We love the use of colour here, the rich blue tones give this home a sophisticated vibe, and the character features, such as the shutters and wood panelling, are delightful. Pour a glass of whiskey and take the weight off your feet with a rest on the comfy armchair or admire the city views. When it's time for bed, the bedroom area lies beyond the kitchen behind more painted panelling – get a good night’s sleep ready to start a new fun packed day in this vibrant city.

This home's vast living room merges period grandeur with a contemporary neutral palette as the high, elegantly corniced ceilings meet with the modern, muted grey walls. On the raised ground floor of a typical Georgian building, it's the perfect blend of the city's historic architecture and clean-cut contemporary styling. Along with the spacious living room, complete with a dining table for four, there's a separate kitchen with everything you could need for cooking at home, and a relaxing bedroom to retreat to at the end of a day exploring. Found in the West End of the city, near to Haymarket station, the flat offers easy transport links and is only ten minutes walk away from Princes Street. Stroll to Edinburgh Castle in less than half an hour or explore the area's excellent independent boutiques, coffee shops, restaurants, and bars.

The Hydeaway

Nestled between the regal buildings of Edinburgh’s UNESCO New Town, this beautiful apartment puts you right in the West End. With Princes Street a mere five minute walk away, you’ll not only wind up in the buzzing centre of the city, but also have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the iconic Edinburgh Castle. Wander through the cosy neighbourhood and pop into one of the many restaurants serving fresh Scottish fare. To see the city’s more tranquil side, head to the Water of Leith walkway – a seven-minute stroll away – a traffic-free riverside path linking the beautiful Dean Village with Modern Art Galleries and beyond. If you wish to explore further afield, Haymarket Station is a stone’s throw away – from here you’ll be able to make a number of day trips around the country by rail.

If you’re one for afternoon naps, you’ll be very taken by the sheer size of this bedroom. Doze off on the comfy bed as the afternoon sun starts to dip and wake up refreshed to head out for a night on the town.

Experience a stay like no other at this cosy Gothic castle, part of an unfinished design for Edinburgh’s first observatory. At the top of Calton Hill, you'll have some truly breathtaking views from this historical home. The National Gallery is next door and the rest of the city is a short walk away, easily making up for the lack of parking. It should be noted that the home's standout location does attract a number of tourists, so if you're looking for some peace and privacy it might not be for you. That said, the main bedroom enjoys an en-suite with a luxurious standalone bathtub, and there's outdoor seating to make the most of this stunning location.

The Stargazer's Retreat

Just over a twenty-minute walk from the heart and soul of the Old Town – Edinburgh Castle – the New Town has quite a different vibe. You’ll find Georgian architecture nearly everywhere you turn, and historic tenement buildings lining the streets as you head towards Canonmills. While these stone structures might look similar from the outside, we can guarantee you'll find eclectic homes within. This flat is no exception. The owner is a local artist, whose creative interior design choices are evident throughout. You’ll find her charming, abstract artwork on display in various rooms, as well as brightly-coloured walls, quirky tablecloth prints, antique furniture, and unique lamps on ornate cabinets. Our favourite spot has to be the lounge – this yellow room is full of character and old-world charm. Light up the fire and gather everyone round for a board game on a rainy day in this sumptuous space. Or at dusk, it could equally serve as a plush pad for an impromptu whisky-tasting session. While you sip on single malts, have the host arrange for a private chef to come over and handle dinner. You are on holiday after all.

Located in Abbey Hill, this cosy studio apartment offers comfort and ease in a wonderful part of Edinburgh. From here, you can stroll into the Old Town and you’ll find a great selection of local pubs, cafes and shops. You can also walk to Arthur’s Seat and there are great public transport links – making it easy to get around. It’s worth noting the apartment is set across one room, but it’s the ideal base for couples and solo travellers in search of a laidback space to call home.

You’re two doors down from the Museum of Edinburgh, a five-minute walk to the Palace of Holyroodhouse and a fifteen-minute mosey to the ancient Edinburgh Castle.

Housed in a beautifully preserved Georgian townhouse, this chic apartment in Edinburgh’s New Town will make you feel right at home. The free-standing bathtub is another treat, perfect if you’ve spent the day sightseeing and need to rest your feet.

Two large sash windows in the living space invite in natural light and there are several lavish touches in the interior design, from the ornate furnishings and the patterned wallpaper to the subway tile bathroom. There's a wide selection of restaurants to be found on the neighbouring Queen Street and George Street, while lots of the city's most famous attractions can be easily reached on foot — Edinburgh Castle takes just under a quarter of an hour, for instance.

What this Old Town studio lacks in space, it more than makes up for in location. Situated directly across from The National Museum of Scotland, only minutes from The Royal Mile, you're in the heart of Edinburgh's most historic neighbourhood here. History buffs will love climbing to the top of Edinburgh Castle (a ten-minute stroll), fashionistas can shop 'till they drop on Princes St (ten minutes on foot), while ramblers can enjoy a stroll through Salisbury Crags (walkable in half an hour). With cosy cafes, lively pubs, independent shops and mouthwatering eateries all on your doorstep, as far as locales go, you can't do much better.

Princes Street is about a ten-minute stroll away, the Royal Mile is walkable in fifteen, and Dean Village is just down the road. Selkirk Grace

Sitting within one of Edinburgh's many Georgian buildings, this loft apartment doesn't have the period features you might expect from the handsome exterior, but it's still easy on the eye nevertheless. Ideally, it could do with another bathroom, but that's nitpicking really. One thing we especially like is that the neighbourhood is a little more residential than the touristy centre, but you're still within walking distance of many of the city's attractions – the castle and old town are both around half an hour's walk, for instance.

You'll be a five-minute walk from buzzing Princes Street, while the Royal Mile and other Old Town attractions are just a bit further. Plan on driving?
