Despite this enviable location, it’s a surprisingly big place, and everything feels very high end. The interiors are relaxed without being too casual — traditional touches, such as the tan leather sofas and the original marble fireplace, mix well with more contemporary flourishes like the glass dining table and the plethora of artwork on display. We’d also be remiss not to mention the wonderful view of the castle, which can be reached in ten minutes on foot. Even closer is the greenery of Princes Street Garden, while there are shops and restaurants galore on nearby George Street.

It boasts Edinburgh Castle views from the entrance and a private outdoor space, complete with a gas fireplace and sofas. It's the perfect place for pre-theatre drinks or a wee dram at the end of the night. You may even be lucky enough to see one of the fireworks displays light up the sky around the castle.

Inside, it's been freshly renovated by one of Scotland's leading interior designers. A lot of attention to detail has been lavished on this home. We adore the custom wallpaper, designer accessories, plush velvet seating and drapes, as well as the contemporary artworks by Scottish and New York artists. All in all, this creates a sumptuous, five-star boutique suite feel. There’s even a secret extra outdoor room furnished with tartan throws and puffin cushions – the ideal spot for reading a book.

The location is as impressive as this apartment. It's a three-minute stroll to both Princes Street and the Lyceum Theatre, while Usher Hall, which has hosted concerts and events since 1914, is a mere one-minute saunter. No trip to the city would be complete without visiting Edinburgh Castle – it's around ten minutes on foot.

This cute little apartment puts you right on Edinburgh’s Grassmarket. Once the city’s livestock marketplace dating back to the 1300s, this square is now home to buzzing bars and cafés. The Castle looms overhead, and it’s a five-minute walk up some old steps to reach this and the Royal Mile. Even better, you’re placed at the bottom of Victoria Street, where a rainbow of 19th-century townhouses attract photographers from far and wide.

True to its Old Town location, the flat itself is housed in a historic tenement building with big sash windows and its original fireplace still on show. High ceilings and original wooden floors keep things classy and spots of greenery come courtesy of pot plants throughout. There’s plenty of room around the glass dining table and across plush leather sofas. The best bit is the view from the living room, where you can watch the lively Grassmarket come to life before you.

This apartment is just a short stroll from The Meadows, perfect for a picnic or for the children to play. Holyrood Park and the famous Royal Mile are also within walking distance, as are many eateries, including Michelin Star restaurants. Housed in a traditional stone Victorian building, you’ll find period features such as bay windows inside this home. We should note that the third bedroom is off the main bedroom and is a small box room with a single bed, but it’s okay for a child. This place is ideal for a family looking to enjoy all that this wonderful city has to offer.

Glowing Ember is something of an unexpected treat. The square outside is lovely, but even so, the flat itself is a surprise. There’s a sense of drama all around, much of which comes from the contrast between antiques and modern furniture, as well as the setting over two levels. The conservatory at the back stands out a bit, as the design is different, but while it’s a bit simpler, that’s exactly what you want in summer, when you can throw the doors open and lounge around in the sun.

Mixing contemporary minimalist furniture with Georgian period features, Watching For Comets feels very homey. Both modern and bright, it has everything you need for a comfortable stay – including an open-plan kitchen/living room, which sets the scene for many cosy nights-in. The tram runs past the front of the home, so you’re also incredibly well-connected. And if you feel like exploring the city by foot, you can reach many of Edinburgh’s art galleries and the Water of Leigh in about ten minutes.

Its bright green painted exterior stands out on the water, and the interior has gorgeous, rich wood throughout. Two bright terraces on the roof deck are where you’ll sip champagne on arrival. Experience a stay like no other at this cosy Gothic castle, part of an unfinished design for Edinburgh’s first observatory. At the top of Calton Hill, you'll have some truly breathtaking views from this historical home. The National Gallery is next door and the rest of the city is a short walk away, easily making up for the lack of parking. It should be noted that the home's standout location does attract a number of tourists, so if you're looking for some peace and privacy it might not be for you. That said, the main bedroom enjoys an en-suite with a luxurious standalone bathtub, and there's outdoor seating to make the most of this stunning location.

Sitting within one of Edinburgh's many Georgian buildings, this loft apartment doesn't have the period features you might expect from the handsome exterior, but it's still easy on the eye nevertheless. Ideally, it could do with another bathroom, but that's nitpicking really. One thing we especially like is that the neighbourhood is a little more residential than the touristy centre, but you're still within walking distance of many of the city's attractions – the castle and old town are both around half an hour's walk, for instance.

At the eastern end of the famous Royal Mile, you’ll find this modern apartment taking residence in an old brewery. Drawing inspiration from its industrial origins, exposed bulbs, Crittall-style doors, robust furniture and dramatic black accents pack heaps of character into the space. The living area has been impeccably curated to ensure guests have enough room to entertain or relax. The bespoke kitchenette is stylish and functional. Put together a light breakfast in the morning accompanied by locally sourced zero-waste coffee, provided by your host. Once you’re fuelled up and ready to go, step out into your Old Town neighbourhood. You’re two doors down from the Museum of Edinburgh, a five-minute walk to the Palace of Holyroodhouse and a fifteen-minute mosey to the ancient Edinburgh Castle.

We love the clever use of cabinetry that’s been used for the bespoke kitchenette and the master bedroom’s chic vanity desk that will make getting ready for a night out on the town a treat. History buffs will be happy that they're just a twelve-minute walk away from Edinburgh Castle while Calton Hill, with its incomparable city views, is a fourteen-minute stroll from your front door.

This is a genuinely special home, with an abundance of character and sophistication, with everything finished to a high quality. The location was equally impressive, found on a quiet cobbled street just off a main busy road, within walking distance of the city centre. While the striking master bedroom came close, the living room was our favourite room in the home. It feels almost like an old school drawing room, but with an added comfort factor. There's also great attention to detail, such as the drawer of hot water bottles in the kitchen for those rainy Scottish evenings. 

The Gilderoy

This top floor apartment on historic George Street has the best seat in the house, and we're not just talking about the cow print armchair. From one window you have an unrestricted view of Edinburgh Castle, the iconic fortress that brings inquisitive travellers to the capital. From another, the port district of Leith, and the beaches Edinburgh is not necessarily famous for, but definitely should be. Though it’s not just about the views – the living room's curves, vintage photography and statement armchairs ensure a stay in style. Breakfasting below the huge, arched window in the sunlight is another big plus. Heading out, the New Town is on your doorstep and with it, the buzz of a city you'll never want to leave.

Found on a charming cobbled lane in the middle of Edinburgh's famous New Town, this apartment in a listed Georgian building has way more going for it other than its prime spot on the map. Inside, the palette of greys, blacks and dark wood give the interior the sort of character and warmth you envision from a home in the Scottish capital. Two large sash windows in the living space invite in natural light and there are several lavish touches in the interior design, from the ornate furnishings and the patterned wallpaper to the subway tile bathroom. There's a wide selection of restaurants to be found on the neighbouring Queen Street and George Street, while lots of the city's most famous attractions can be easily reached on foot — Edinburgh Castle takes just under a quarter of an hour, for instance.

This home's vast living room merges period grandeur with a contemporary neutral palette as the high, elegantly corniced ceilings meet with the modern, muted grey walls. On the raised ground floor of a typical Georgian building, it's the perfect blend of the city's historic architecture and clean-cut contemporary styling. Along with the spacious living room, complete with a dining table for four, there's a separate kitchen with everything you could need for cooking at home, and a relaxing bedroom to retreat to at the end of a day exploring. Found in the West End of the city, near to Haymarket station, the flat offers easy transport links and is only ten minutes walk away from Princes Street. Stroll to Edinburgh Castle in less than half an hour or explore the area's excellent independent boutiques, coffee shops, restaurants, and bars.

If you're a couple, solo traveller or business professional looking to be within walking distance of the majority of Edinburgh's main attractions, then this chic studio is perfect. When it's time for bed, the bedroom area lies beyond the kitchen behind more painted panelling – get a good night’s sleep ready to start a new fun packed day in this vibrant city.

We love the living room’s large suede sofas that beckon relaxing evenings over a glass of wine by the period working fireplace, and the large kitchen bathed in natural light that’s ready to cater celebratory feasts aplenty. Just over a twenty-minute walk from the heart and soul of the Old Town – Edinburgh Castle – the New Town has quite a different vibe. You’ll find Georgian architecture nearly everywhere you turn, and historic tenement buildings lining the streets as you head towards Canonmills. While these stone structures might look similar from the outside, we can guarantee you'll find eclectic homes within. This flat is no exception. The owner is a local artist, whose creative interior design choices are evident throughout. You’ll find her charming, abstract artwork on display in various rooms, as well as brightly-coloured walls, quirky tablecloth prints, antique furniture, and unique lamps on ornate cabinets. Our favourite spot has to be the lounge – this yellow room is full of character and old-world charm. Light up the fire and gather everyone round for a board game on a rainy day in this sumptuous space. Or at dusk, it could equally serve as a plush pad for an impromptu whisky-tasting session. While you sip on single malts, have the host arrange for a private chef to come over and handle dinner. You are on holiday after all.
