This two-bedroom apartment in central St Andrews boasts a period exterior, fashionable interiors and a private patio and garden. Although comfortable and stylish (there’s even a log fire), the living room lacks a proper dining table (it’s really more of a coffee table). No more than a 5-minute walk from the University and 12th-century cathedral, it’s an excellent base from which to explore this seaside town. Golf lovers will delight in its proximity to the Royal & Ancient Golf Club.

Designed in the late 1800s by Scottish architect, Sir Robert Lorimer, this home has been lovingly restored into a stylish retreat where colour and craftsmanship make an impressive double act. Climb the stairs to the top floor and you’ll find the cosy bedroom quarters, complete with an incredible free-standing copper bath – best enjoyed by candlelight with a glass of something chilled. But don’t worry if you haven’t the time for soaking – there’s a walk-in waterfall shower next door too. Back downstairs, you’ll find an immaculately presented living space with a wood-burning stove at the heart. Step outside into the beautiful garden which wraps around the home and enjoy stunning views of the countryside, with woodland paths leading you directly through Balcarres Estate and into some of Scotland’s finest countryside. Walk through ancient forests, cross rolling hills with dramatic views across the Firth of Forth, or stravaig along the two miles of pristine beachfront at Largo Bay. And for somewhere that feels this secluded, you’re just an hour’s drive from Edinburgh and less than 15 minutes drive from the medieval town of St Andrews, with its castle and cathedral ruins. New York loft-style meets traditional fishing cottage at this bijou home in Pittenweem. Stepping inside, you can see this place was designed by an award-winning architect. Flagstone floors and the old stone partition wall have been retained as though from the 18th-century, but the kitchen is all sleek units and high-spec appliances. A wood-burner still crackles at the heart of the home, keeping things cosy in the colder months. Upstairs, a plump king-size bed awaits and the traditional old window looks out onto the narrow wynd below. As for location, you’re mere footsteps from Pittenweem’s High Street (about 30, we’ve counted), where you’ll find cafés, craft shops, galleries and a fabulous fish and chip shop. It’s a two-minute walk to the East Neuk's only working harbourfront where you can watch the fishing boats land their catch of lobsters and langoustines, and St Andrews is a twenty-minute drive away.

The market town of Cupar is a bustling area where ancient monuments collide with vibrant, modern high streets. A fifteen-minute drive from St Andrews, where you can play eighteen holes at the ‘Home of Golf’, you’ll need a home where you can hang up your clubs after a long day. Six minutes on foot from Cupar station, this unique building has historic tales to tell. Dating from 1815, this was the town council’s Burgh Chambers, where important decisions and important people were commonplace inside its walls. But today, you can play the VIP role, as a guest in this vast apartment.

Upon entering the grand living space, you’ll be in awe of its magnificent, period interiors. Transporting you back in time, every piece of furniture has been carefully selected with the help of a Scottish furniture expert, with key Georgian pieces and others made by local artisans. A luxe colour scheme of olive green and rich mahogany flooring is illuminated by one of the grandest set of bay windows you could imagine. Dine below the chandeliers before heading off to slumber in one of two unique bedrooms, with wooden walls, brass bed frames, and original sash windows.

Kinghorn offers pubs, traditional chippies, a golf course, and cute cafés, but the standout feature is the huge town hall. This Tudor-Gothic style building was built in 1826, with its ground floors having played the role of council chambers and even a prison. Secret stairways and enormous windows let you admire views of Kinghorn Beach, a seven-minute walk away. But why are we focusing solely on this historic landmark? Well, because this is your home.

On your way to the cottage, you might pass by the pier, where you can breathe in the bracing air from the Firth of Forth and take in the view.

Located in east-central Scotland, Fife is only a forty-minute drive from Edinburgh and an hour to Glasgow, but far enough away to feel secluded. Drive out if you’re looking to explore the cities, but we can’t promise you that you’d want to leave this home once you’ve settled in. Surrounded by trees and green slopes, this place is bright and modern, but still oozing with the potential for optimal comfort. Light the wood-burning stove, claim your spot on the plush sofa and let it envelop you as you let go of all the tension you’ve been holding onto. The egg chair is the perfect spot for bookworms, but you’d better be quick on calling dibs because we can guarantee everyone would be eager to have a go. Even though this home is the epitome of relaxation inside, you’re going to want to brave the nippy Scottish air to go outside – it’ll be worth it, trust us. Head out with a bottle of prosecco and slip into the hot tub – just when you think you couldn’t be more relaxed. 

If you have to leave, stay connected to nature by visiting the Lochore Meadows, or stroll through the Townhill Wood where you’ll encounter century-old trees. Cleish Castle is an eleven-minute drive away, with Locleven Castle being just a couple of minutes more. Head to the local golf course, eight-minutes from here, to play a round or two, or take to the loch for waterboarding. In between, pop in at Genaro’s Fish Bar or The Village Inn for a bite to eat.

On the outside, this 18th-century barn conversion is rustic as can be. But step through the door and you'll be transported into a serene Scandinavian-inspired space – appropriate, given guests enjoy a private session in the shared Finnish sauna. The wood-burning stove, replete with a supply of logs, is the perfect tonic after a brisk stroll through the glens of the Pentland Hills Regional Park, and the kitchen provides everything you need for dinner. You'll need a car here, as it's a mile from the nearest road and a short drive from Penicuik – but the parking spot makes this a breeze. Just note there are a few other cottages on-site, so you may bump into other guests from time to time.

In 1450, the first tower of this historic Scottish house was constructed by monks. It still forms a part of the house to this day. Embedded scallop shells and long-buried charms tie the history of this place with the fae folk. 

Each bedroom retains the feeling of a medieval castle with its stone fireplaces and hand-carved four-posters beds, but some have been updated to the turn of the 20th century with William Morris wallpaper. 

Walking through the social spaces is like a private tour of a preserved castle. The vaulted old kitchen feels as though a 15th century monk could walk in at any second, but there’s a 21st-century modern kitchen on the first floor for those that prefer a gas stove to a cauldron on an open fire. Further along the vaults you’ll find a games room and an antique toilet in the WC. 

A series of drawing rooms and sitting rooms each have their own distinct character from the bookcase-lined library to the pine-panelled lounge with its glorious fireplace. Our favourite room has the be the Chinese Room, a staple in manor homes of the 18th century, its ornate mantlepiece (photographed by the National Museum of Scotland as an outstanding example of Neo-Chinnoise design) and wooden dragon lamps feeling untouched since 1800.

Mid-century on the outside, the interior is an ode to decadent manor homes with a vast library of books, oil paintings of the Dalrymple family and collections of private artefacts that should be in a museum.
