This two-bedroom apartment in central St Andrews boasts a period exterior, fashionable interiors and a private patio and garden. Although comfortable and stylish (there’s even a log fire), the living room lacks a proper dining table (it’s really more of a coffee table). No more than a 5-minute walk from the University and 12th-century cathedral, it’s an excellent base from which to explore this seaside town. The market town of Cupar is a bustling area where ancient monuments collide with vibrant, modern high streets. A fifteen-minute drive from St Andrews, where you can play eighteen holes at the ‘Home of Golf’, you’ll need a home where you can hang up your clubs after a long day. Six minutes on foot from Cupar station, this unique building has historic tales to tell. Dating from 1815, this was the town council’s Burgh Chambers, where important decisions and important people were commonplace inside its walls. But today, you can play the VIP role, as a guest in this vast apartment.

Upon entering the grand living space, you’ll be in awe of its magnificent, period interiors. Transporting you back in time, every piece of furniture has been carefully selected with the help of a Scottish furniture expert, with key Georgian pieces and others made by local artisans. A luxe colour scheme of olive green and rich mahogany flooring is illuminated by one of the grandest set of bay windows you could imagine. Dine below the chandeliers before heading off to slumber in one of two unique bedrooms, with wooden walls, brass bed frames, and original sash windows.

New York loft-style meets traditional fishing cottage at this bijou home in Pittenweem. Stepping inside, you can see this place was designed by an award-winning architect. Flagstone floors and the old stone partition wall have been retained as though from the 18th-century, but the kitchen is all sleek units and high-spec appliances. A wood-burner still crackles at the heart of the home, keeping things cosy in the colder months. Upstairs, a plump king-size bed awaits and the traditional old window looks out onto the narrow wynd below. Light the wood-burning stove, claim your spot on the plush sofa and let it envelop you as you let go of all the tension you’ve been holding onto. The egg chair is the perfect spot for bookworms, but you’d better be quick on calling dibs because we can guarantee everyone would be eager to have a go. Even though this home is the epitome of relaxation inside, you’re going to want to brave the nippy Scottish air to go outside – it’ll be worth it, trust us. Head out with a bottle of prosecco and slip into the hot tub – just when you think you couldn’t be more relaxed.

On the outside, this 18th-century barn conversion is rustic as can be. But step through the door and you'll be transported into a serene Scandinavian-inspired space – appropriate, given guests enjoy a private session in the shared Finnish sauna. The wood-burning stove, replete with a supply of logs, is the perfect tonic after a brisk stroll through the glens of the Pentland Hills Regional Park, and the kitchen provides everything you need for dinner. You'll need a car here, as it's a mile from the nearest road and a short drive from Penicuik – but the parking spot makes this a breeze. Just note there are a few other cottages on-site, so you may bump into other guests from time to time.

Only 20 miles from Edinburgh, this lodge is nestled on the grounds of a 16th-century tower. Views stretch across the countryside in every direction, from the Lammermuir Hills in the south to Edinburgh Castle in the east. The patio is the biggest draw – nothing beats an alfresco Old Fashioned while admiring the castle – but the interiors are just as handsome. We love the bright living area and panoramic window seats in the bedrooms. And, of course, the location will be a big hit with nature buffs. Featuring on “most stylish stays in the UK” lists, this 1960s home sits within acres of walled gardens, landscaped in the 18th century and built by Napoleonic prisoners of war. Mid-century on the outside, the interior is an ode to decadent manor homes with a vast library of books, oil paintings of the Dalrymple family and collections of private artefacts that should be in a museum. In 1450, the first tower of this historic Scottish house was constructed by monks. It still forms a part of the house to this day. Embedded scallop shells and long-buried charms tie the history of this place with the fae folk. 

Each bedroom retains the feeling of a medieval castle with its stone fireplaces and hand-carved four-posters beds, but some have been updated to the turn of the 20th century with William Morris wallpaper. 

Walking through the social spaces is like a private tour of a preserved castle. The vaulted old kitchen feels as though a 15th century monk could walk in at any second, but there’s a 21st-century modern kitchen on the first floor for those that prefer a gas stove to a cauldron on an open fire. Further along the vaults you’ll find a games room and an antique toilet in the WC. 

A series of drawing rooms and sitting rooms each have their own distinct character from the bookcase-lined library to the pine-panelled lounge with its glorious fireplace. Our favourite room has the be the Chinese Room, a staple in manor homes of the 18th century, its ornate mantlepiece (photographed by the National Museum of Scotland as an outstanding example of Neo-Chinnoise design) and wooden dragon lamps feeling untouched since 1800. 

In terms of location, you’re in the East Lothian countryside, a five-minute drive from the seaside town of Musselburgh where you’ll find a beach and golf course. Edinburgh’s historic centre is just a twenty-minute drive away too.
