If you’d like to expend some energy, embark on a hike to Roxburgh – the walk begins at Kelso Abbey and takes around an hour and twenty minutes. 

Head back to your abode in the early evening for a tasty supper rustled up at the kitchenette followed by a mug of hot chocolate in front of the wood-burning stove.

Situated in a Grade II-listed building dating back to 1878, we can't help but swoon over this Alnwick apartment. It doesn't lack character, that's for sure – vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and antique knick-knacks like typewriters and old books are in abundance. We think it's the perfect blend of old and new, and nowhere is a better example of that than the open-plan living area. Bright and roomy, there's more than enough space here to spread out and get comfortable, whether you're tucking into a feast around the table or snuggling up in front of the fire. Cooking is anything but a chore in the glossy kitchen, and on rainy days, head up to the mezzanine for board games and billiards. There's also a communal garden for the summer months, where you can sip tea in the sunshine or cocktails at twilight.

And the location is excellent, too. Alnwick is as charming as they come, sprinkled with history and magic – no wonder they filmed Harry Potter here. Spend afternoons wandering down the cobbled lanes, popping in and out of the independent shops, cafes and bookstores that line the high street. Dating back over 170 years, this beautiful home in the Scottish Borders was updated in 1870 to take on the Scottish Baronial features that gave it its fairytale castle look, but it was only in the late 70s that the incredible vaulted ceiling was discovered and the mezzanine was added to update the home to what it is today. Of course there has been modernisation since to give it the contemporary, but homely, feel and the result is an ambient, open space that encourages rest and relaxation. 

With the windows stretching up to towards the ceiling, there’s plenty of natural light and bookworms will rejoice to find a little home library on the mezzanine where they’re able to curl up with any of the good books on offer. Look out over the lounge from up there and when you get a little cold, head down to kindle the fireplace so you can watch the flames dance between every turn of the page. 

Musicians can retire to the piano room to hone their skills or entertain the rest of the family in style, but not before sitting down for dinner at the chunky oak table.

Make the most of having your own personal watchtower where you can witness views of Budle Bay from different angles. We particularly adore the addition of a telescope, which will allow you to explore the distant scenery. Budle Bay has built a reputation as a bird sanctuary, so you might just spot birds like wildfowl and waders flying past. The home itself oozes a connection to the sea and the sandy bays that surround it – from the lush blues of the furnishings to the decorative touches.

Being located on the edge of historic Bamburgh, in the small village of Waren Mill, means you can enjoy long, quiet walks and energetic hikes through the countryside and along the coast here. A trip to Bamburgh Castle followed by a stroll along Bamburgh's sandy shores is a must. It takes five-minutes to drive here and you can easily while away hours marveling at the scenery. If you watched The Last Kingdom on Netflix, then you may just recognise the castle – it's pretty iconic to the storyline! Going slightly further afield, Northumbria National Park can be reached within thirty-minutes, and here you'll find beautiful walks amongst the lush countryside.

The Sea is My Friend

Bamburgh Beach and its seafront castle are just a short stroll away from this home. Days spent lounging on the sand are definitely a given, but, if you'd rather enjoy a laid-back afternoon at home, the garden is the perfect spot. A timber playset is available for children, a lawn is great for furry friends, and outdoor seating lets parents relax with a refreshing drink. We think the nautical-inspired interiors are lovely, too. The log burner keeps things cosy during the cooler months and the soaker bath is just what you need after a day exploring the Northumbrian coast. Leisure club membership is also included, although a small entry charge applies.

This welcome, family home is a wonderful base for your coastal getaway. Nestled on a leafy street in the idyllic village of Newton-by-the-Sea, you’ll love exploring this gorgeous slice of the Northumberland Coast as much as enjoying this sociable base.

Newton-by-the-Sea is dotted with traditional cream-washed cottages, and this charming abode is no different. Inside, the classic yet contemporary interior makes a lovely home-from-home, with polished hardwood floors, bright walls, a gas-burning fireplace, and cosy furnishings. We love the soft blue and sandy tones, exuding comfort while drawing inspiration from the coastal location. And if that doesn’t get you embracing being beside the seaside, the cute beach-themed artwork will. 

Every space has been designed with sociable families in mind. It’s open and inviting, with a beautiful kitchen that’s perfect for gathering around the kitchen island, preparing meals together as a group. The conservatory is another bright and homely space. It’s particularly lovely in the mornings with the sunlight pouring in through the ceiling windows while you savour a nice, hot coffee. Or, you can take your coffee out to the patioed garden and breathe in the fresh seaside air.

A former farmer's cottage just a short drive from Bamburgh and Seahouses, this place has had quite a facelift in recent years and now offers a comfortable and smart home with plenty of luxury touches. A huge vaulted ceiling hangs over the sociable, open-plan living space, where you'll find a high-end kitchen, comfy seating area and dining table – along with big windows and a rather special view. In all its glory, Bamburgh Castle is visible on the skyline just across the nearby farm buildings.

Bright, cosy bedrooms and two bathrooms provide plenty of space for a family or a few friends to share, and we love the ground floor bedroom with patio doors opening to the garden. 

A great spot for keen walkers and beach lovers, it's just a few minutes drive to the coast (the beach is 2 miles away) and even less to the castle itself. Set in a quiet farming hamlet, you'll have peace and quiet, as well as the local amenities, pubs and cafes just a few minutes away.

Over the Barns

The gentle colour scheme at this inviting family home not only sets the mood for a wonderfully relaxing trip, it also perfectly matches its idyllic surroundings. Nestled into the popular town of Seahouses on Northumberland’s coastline, this is a perfect retreat for those in need of some fresh sea air and long coastal walks. A cosy living space calls for snuggling up when the wind blows a gale, while a manicured garden complete with dining set lets you make the most of sunny days. Put a picnic together in your sleek kitchen and take the eighteen-minute stroll to North Sunderland Beach for rock pooling and bracing dips in the North Sea. For those who want a little more adventure, there’s a horse riding school and two golf courses within walking distance of your doorstep. But you can’t visit Seahouses without taking a day trip to the Farne Islands – Sir David Attenborough declared it as one of his most favourite places in the UK to see nature at its best. Keep your eyes peeled for puffins, razorbills and seals bobbing in the waves.

Heart of Stone

This rustic, 17th-century mill has been turned into a luxury nook in the Scottish Borders. You can see the old but still operating waterwheel, contrasted against the roses and flowering lavender on the old miller's house next door. A wood-burning stove sits are the heart of the home, keeping things cosy warm in winter (your host will leave detailed instructions on how to light it so you’ll become an expert). The classy, aubergine-purple kitchen is well stocked with artisan crockery and everything you need to cook up a holiday meal. The mill’s original mezzanine floor has been converted into a plush bedroom with a roll-top bath. Heading outside, you’ll find a small, private woodland garden with table and chairs. Exploring the rest of the old mill site you might spot owls and hedgehogs in the forest, heron and otters by the millpond and acquaint yourself with the friendly resident sheep. Heading into the small village of Lauder, three miles away, you’ll find a handful of craft shops, coffee shops and a local deli too.

The main living space, with its high ceilings and traditional wooden beams, is as cosy as it is grand. Light up the wood burner and flop down on the sofa with a glass of wine to watch a blockbuster after a busy day. When you get hungry, you can whip up your favourite hearty dishes in the kitchen – we recommend a classic Sunday roast. History buffs are truly spoilt, with Alnwick Castle, Bamburg Castle, and Dunstanburgh Castle all within a short drive. Walkers and cyclists can pack a picnic and explore the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just a stone's throw away. And, if you fancy a day trip, you can drive down to Newcastle in around an hour, to immerse yourself in the lively city.
