In the small village of Llanfarian, set in its own enclosed grounds in this detached cottage with a private hot tub, wood-burning fire, and gardens with a patio and outdoor dining area. The popular seaside town of Aberystwyth is less than three miles away where you can enjoy two beaches, a promenade with the oldest pier in Wales, a medieval castle, and a cliff railway with incredible views and the biggest camera obscura in the world. Take full advantage of direct access to the Ystwyth bike trail from the cottage – which links Aberystwyth to Tregaron in the foothills of the Cambrian Mountains. 

After a busy morning of exploring and sightseeing, we would love to enjoy Welsh cakes from the welcome basket alfresco in the garden. Then, after dinner, unwind in the hot tub with the bottle of prosecco, before cwtching up on the sofa in front of the wood-burning fire.

It's easy to spend an afternoon sitting on the south-facing deck, enjoying the peace of the Welsh countryside and keeping an eye out for the swallows, swifts, ducks and frogs living their lives on the water — even an otter has been spotted in the grounds by previous guests. There’s nothing but the cheep and pip of birdsong and the occasional bleat of a lamb here. The curve of the cabin’s roof reflects Hanter Hill opposite, and each cabinet and window frame has been crafted from local cedar and douglas fir. The living room and kitchen has everything you need to unwind in an evening, including a hand-made kitchen and sofa tucked under the gorgeous floating staircase. Heating comes courtesy of infra-red panels, a nod to the environment and, as the cabin is kept cosy, you can select a book from the little library and take things back to analogue. Glass doors lead out to a deck with a fire pit and barbecue. The real highlight is the master bedroom, dappled with botanica and with a picture-frame window looking out over the garden. It’s here you’ll find the longest claw-footed tub we think we’ve ever seen – perfect for a soak after a day hiking up to Hanter Hill or the tumbling cascade of Water Break-Its-Neck waterfall.

When you’re ready to become acquainted with your surroundings, pull on your hiking books and take the twenty-six-minute walk into Rhydypennau for a cup of coffee and slice of cake at the local cafe. Or why not embark on the ten-minute drive to Borth for its 3 miles of golden sand and critter-filled rock pools. Spend evenings in Aberystwyth, a fifteen-minute car ride away, dining on fresh seafood in a revered restaurant. Return to your abode at twilight for a glass of bubbles in the private hot tub and a restful sleep in the sumptuous beds.

Though if you want to dine out, there’s a village pub a five-minute walk away. In terms of location, hikers and walkers will delight in trails up to the Brecon Beacon peaks, right from the doorstep. And those that like a more sedate ramble can follow the canal path nearby. After a day on your feet, guests of this cottage enjoy access to The Treatment Room where a complimentary massage can work out those aches and pains. 

A Glass And A Half

Get off the beaten track at this remote retreat set deep within the Herefordshire countryside, close to the Welsh border. Originally the farm's dairy, it's been lovingly converted from a derelict outbuilding to stylish home from home in just a few short years.

Speaking of walks, there are plenty of public footpaths that pass across the farm, with your hosts able to provide OS maps and walking books should you need them. If you want to venture further afield, why not head up the Skirrid, Sugar Loaf and Black Mountains – all viewable from the garden.


Cider House Rules

Just outside the picturesque village of Llanfrynach, on the grounds of a grade II*-listed Georgian mansion, this one-bedroom cottage is all about rest and relaxation. This former coach house has been converted into a stunning contemporary space. Downstairs, the sitting room boasts sky-high ceilings and ten-foot-tall French doors leading out onto a private patio. The wood burner and deerskin rugs on the floor add a cosy feeling that's perfect for the colder months, while during the summer, you can throw open those doors and let the outside in. The cottage actually has two patio areas – one facing east and the other west – so you can always catch the sun no matter the time of day. Upstairs, the bedroom welcomes you with exposed oak beams and a natural stone wall that perfectly complements the black wrought iron bed frame. Step across the hall to discover a beautiful bathroom with a double-ended tub and a walk-in shower. If you can tear yourself away, there are plenty of leisurely walks and challenging hikes directly from your front door. There are options for all levels, from high peaks to gentle canalside strolls and everything in between. Despite the secluded location, plenty of pubs and restaurants, as well as a supermarket, within a ten-minute drive. After a hard day of hiking in the hills, why not treat yourself to a relaxing massage in the on-site treatment room.

There’s direct access to the Brecon Beacons National Park from the back of the farmhouse, so you won’t run out of hiking or cycling routes. 

When you return after a day exploring the Great Outdoors, you’ll be glad of the mountain spring water hot tub. Fire it up and soak your aching muscles, then spend the rest of the evening playing board games in front of the fire. 

The nearest pub is a fifteen-minute drive, and the cafes and bookshops of Hay-on-Wye are twenty-three minutes away. It may feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, but you can grab a pint or a slice of cake easily enough. Perfection.
