Swap the big smoke for the great outdoors at this converted barn, tucked away at the foot of Angel Mountain, close to the Pembrokeshire coast. 

Nestled amidst the patchwork hills of the Welsh countryside, you could feel a million miles from civilisation here –⁠ which is just how we like things. But when it’s time for a change of pace, the charming seaside town of Newport (six-minute drive) is an afternoon well spent – as is the mighty Pembrokeshire Coast National Park with its vast sandy beaches and secluded coves (eleven-minute drive).
 
Back at this quirky bolthole retreat, exposed stonework shows the bones of this barn's past, while vintage furniture and objects de art add layers of interest and heaps of style. A home for all seasons, on long summer nights, slide the bifold doors right back and stoke up the barbecue – the firepit will help keep the night flowing as a carpet of stars appear overhead. In winter months, hunker down inside and soak up the countryside vistas through the floor-to-ceiling picture windows - that snuggle seat by the wood-burning stove has got your name on it.

Or, ten minutes in the opposite direction lies Carmarthen, believed to be the oldest town in Wales – head there for places to eat, drink and shop aplenty.

Nestled into a square in the charming village of Tremadog, just a ten-minute walk from Porthmadog, this Grade II listed building makes for the perfect North Wales getaway. With Snowdonia National Park and its endless quaint towns, beaches, hiking trails, and historical sights on your doorstep, this cottage is a wonderful choice whether you’re seeking relaxation or adventure. 

This home is one that lends itself to any occasion. Rich colours, exposed brick, and traditional touches make the living room cosy and inviting – you’ll love settling into the snug armchairs in the morning, with the light piercing through the windows, while the warming log-burning fire cuts through the early cold. Your kitchen is just as cosy and comforting, but it’s also practical. It’s kitted out with top-notch appliances that make home-cooked meals a breeze, while the dining room invites family and friends to settle in for light-hearted evenings of good food, games, drinks, and conversation.

Having appeared on a couple of popular TV shows, it’s no surprise that this modern marvel is a perfect place to stay for friends and families alike. Cool and contemporary inside, it’s quite the contrast to the rugged landscape surrounding it. Just take care with the cliff edge – little ones and four-legged friends will need to be supervised. 

Clifftop Dream

Sitting in the middle of the tiny Snowdonian village of Dinas Mawddwy, this building was once the locale's Wesleyan chapel, but today it's been respectfully converted into a rather remarkable place to stay.

Plenty of the period features remain, including the original brickwork, pew seats at the dining table and the tall lancet windows that look out to Welsh hillsides, as well as bathing the interior with natural light. However, it's also fair to say that the living quarters have been brought up to the standards expected from 21st-century travellers, particularly in the case of the super-sleek kitchen and the large games room complete with tables for pool and foosball.

Despite this architectural setting, some of the biggest perks lie outside the stone walls. Not only is there a terrace on which to sit out around the fire pit, but guests are also treated to a hot tub, which is naturally the best seat from which to admire the stunning surroundings. 

It's fair to say that those fond of the great outdoors couldn't wish for a better location. Cader Idris is ten miles away if you're in the mood for a challenging hike, while it doesn't take too long to reach the coastline when the weather calls for a day on the beach. Closer to home – much closer in fact – the village has a local gastropub only a minute's walk from the front door.

Mountain Chapel

With its rugged cliffs, miles of sandy beaches and hidden coves, North Pembrokeshire is a natural haven. And this cosy barn makes the perfect setting to discover the timeless beauty of the Welsh countryside.

The farmhouse is as traditional as they come, with wood beams and a roaring fireplace. In the mornings, cook hearty breakfasts on the AGA while enjoying the outstanding views of the valley from the kitchen window. From almost every angle here, the views captivate. 

Perhaps you’ll lace up your boots and head out on a nature walk. There’s an acre of woodland on the 40-acre farm, as well as a stretch of river for you to paddle in. There’s direct access to the Brecon Beacons National Park from the back of the farmhouse, so you won’t run out of hiking or cycling routes. 

When you return after a day exploring the Great Outdoors, you’ll be glad of the mountain spring water hot tub. Fire it up and soak your aching muscles, then spend the rest of the evening playing board games in front of the fire. 

The nearest pub is a fifteen-minute drive, and the cafes and bookshops of Hay-on-Wye are twenty-three minutes away. It may feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, but you can grab a pint or a slice of cake easily enough. Perfection. 


Serenity in the Black Mountains

Snuggled at the southern point of Snowdonia National Park in Sarnau, this quaint abode is made for rural exploration. If you don't fancy the challenging terrains of Snowdon, there are various walking and cycling trails close by to the cottage.

This snug home infuses a homespun and rustic feel with modern comforts. Find stone walls and wooden beams looking into a TV, DVD player and contemporary cooking items. It's the perfect blend of tradition and technology. 

To really capture the privacy and peace of your home, sit out on the garden bench and admire the stunning views. Situated in a quiet hamlet, the only sounds you'll hear are from the animals in the nearby fields.

If you'd prefer to get out and explore the nearby area, the encompassing landscape is blessed with numerous mountain biking trails. If two wheels aren't your scene, Bala is just four miles away and is an oasis of water sports, abseiling and kayaking.

Once you've explored the diverse scenery around your tranquil haven, visit the welcoming pubs and restaurants around Bala. For a real Welsh treat, a Michelin star restaurant resides up the road in Llandrillo.

With the flexibility to sleep up to 24 people, this magical country house is all set up for special events, gatherings of friends and family, activity holidays and more. With views across the Wye Valley, it's set on five acres of pristine land and has nine bedrooms for you to choose between – either in the beautifully restored and extended 17th-Century farmhouse or the stunning new guest annexe. 

Lovers of interior design will have a field day here. It's been impeccably put together by its owner Kari, a professional designer, with nods to traditional country chic, contemporary cool and even Antipodean modern rustic – Kari grew up in Australia. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions. And if you fancy an action-packed break, your host can put together a unique itinerary for your group. You're bound to make memories that last a lifetime.    

The Memory Jar

Found just outside the town of Narbeth in beautiful Pembrokeshire, this home is generous both when it comes to size and the number of distractions that guests will have at their disposal.

Many of these amenities lie out on the grounds, which include everything from a full-size rugby pitch with posts and a zipline to a lake and orchard perfect for peaceful strolls. Add an eight-person hot tub into the mix and you've got a property in which boredom is unlikely to rear its head.

If the sun makes an appearance, why not head for Coppet Hall Beach only fifteen minutes' drive away or one of the huge number of coves and sandy spots that lie along the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path? Alternatively, the charming town of Tenby lies twenty minutes away in the car.

Set back on a peaceful, private cul-de-sac, yet just five minutes walking distance from the local village's beach boutiques, wine bars, and eateries – this perfectly positioned holiday home undoubtedly boasts the Abersoch appeal.

We particularly love the large kitchen and dining area, which extends the indoor living space – outside and onto the terrace. On a clear day, you might be able to spot the blue sea views in the distance. After all, this home resides only a seven-minute stroll away from the sandy shores of Abersoch Beach. 

After a fun-filled day of soaking up the quintessential British seaside experience or following a round of golf at Abersoch Golf Club – head home to unwind over a group barbecue on the terrace. With the local park and playground located a minute's walk away, you'll find keeping the kids entertained here an absolute breeze. Since the home is gated, rest assured in knowing that younger children can also play freely in the garden at their own leisure. 

Come evening time; you'll have the choice of strolling down to one of the local pubs for a nightcap or curling up in front of the fireplace for a cosy night in.
