The house is just across the road from the beach, so each morning you’ll wake up to the sound of the sea gently rushing to shore. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room showcase the home’s prime beachfront location – if you’re anything like us, you’ll lose track of how long you spend gazing at the peaceful view. Perched on the side of the Menai Strait, this four-storey gem dates back to the Victorian era and benefits from beautiful views of the sea, Bangor Pier and the Snowdonia mountain range. In the idyllic mining own of Blaenau Ffestiniog, this home was once an old chapel dating back to 1861. The building has been lovingly renovated, featuring an open-plan kitchen and snug area ideal for family living. When it comes to things to see and do, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to activities. We recommend heading into town to rent bikes and exploring some of the many biking routes on offer, which will have you riding past old quarries, lakes and rivers.

There were plenty of reasons why this penthouse apartment made it into our collection, but let's start with the most obvious. When guests step out onto the ornate white balcony, they're greeted with stunning views over the Dyfi Estuary and Cardigan Bay, stretching all the way down the Ceredigion Coastline. As is often the case with coastal locations, there's just so much sky and this uninterrupted panorama brings the added benefit of meaning the interior is flooded with natural light through the windows and skylights. This is emphasised pleasingly by the stark white walls and it makes for a wonderfully bright space to sprawl out on the tan leather sofa. As you can probably tell from looking out the window, Aberdyfi Beach sits just across the street and there are cafes and pubs along the seafront for when you fancy a refreshment. Slightly further afield, there are opportunities for birdwatching in RSPB Ynys-hir and Dyfi Osprey Project, both taking around half an hour to reach in the car.

The walking route to Cader Idris in Southern Snowdonia is just fifteen minutes away, ideal for experienced hikers. Mountain bikers can head to Coes-y-Brenin Forest Park to let off steam. For a gentler excursion, you might stroll to the local shops, to a cafe for lunch, or to a pub for a post-hike pint.

The farmhouse overlooks Cader Idris, and there are magnificent views from almost every angle – stay awhile in bed, sipping a cuppa and drinking in the vista. The farmhouse is cosy in a rustic way, with original slate floors and exposed beams, and with ambient warmth provided by the inglenook open fire, the wood burner and the Aga – you’ll want to pack your warmest woollies for cold weather. Mountain bikers can head fifteen minutes to Coed y Brenin for scenic off-beaten tracks and traditional pubs. There are also beaches to explore in Barmouth, where you can choose to paddle board or sit back and relax on the sand. Pick up supplies in the market town of Dolgellau for a heart-warming dinner back home or stop off at a pub for a bite to eat in the evening, then make your way back along the track for an evening of stargazing around the fire pit. It’s the perfect way to end a day in the countryside. 

Mountain Mystique

The town of Dolgellau is among the most picturesque in Eryri and much of that is down to the abundance of stone homes dotted across the map, including this cottage.

It may look rustic at first glance but step behind the front door and you'll find a pretty contemporary address – save for the traditional stone fireplace in the living room, which we're glad has been retained. Otherwise, the design is fresh and bright, with plenty of perks – the small games room will keep youngsters entertained for a couple of hours at least, while grown-ups can perhaps make the most of this tranquillity with a soak in the pink bathroom's tub.

However, if the weather's on your side, you can choose instead to head outside and luxuriate in the Jacuzzi on the terrace. You can also dine out here, complete with a view of Cader Idris to keep you company. This mountain peak is one of many in the surrounding National Park that are easily reachable for long rambles, but it also only takes twenty minutes to reach the Barmouth seaside if you're ever in the mood for a beach day.
