Characterful and cosy, this charming coastal retreat is mere steps away from Aberdyfi Beach. The crashing waves are so close you can almost touch them from the living area – in fact, you can sit at the dining table and see the beach out the big windows. It's the perfect spot to savour a glass of wine and people-watch, but with the art galleries, restaurants and the sea on your doorstep, you'll surely be tempted out. On rainy days, curl up with a book on the squishy sofas, play a board game or two, or just snooze the afternoon away in the two comfortable bedrooms. The kitchen has everything you'll need to rustle up delicious dinners, and there are plenty of shops nearby to stock up on ingredients and fresh seafood. Aberdovey is a small seaside village on the harbour, but there's plenty nearby to keep you entertained – be it crabbing on the jetty, sea rowing at the rowing club or nibbling on fish and chips at a beachside picnic. But for more action-packed adventures, hike the picturesque Wales Coast Path or roam the nature reserves in Snowdonia National Park – the ancient woodland in Ceunant Llennyrch National Nature Reserve is an hour's drive.

There were plenty of reasons why this penthouse apartment made it into our collection, but let's start with the most obvious. When guests step out onto the ornate white balcony, they're greeted with stunning views over the Dyfi Estuary and Cardigan Bay, stretching all the way down the Ceredigion Coastline. As is often the case with coastal locations, there's just so much sky and this uninterrupted panorama brings the added benefit of meaning the interior is flooded with natural light through the windows and skylights. This is emphasised pleasingly by the stark white walls and it makes for a wonderfully bright space to sprawl out on the tan leather sofa. As you can probably tell from looking out the window, Aberdyfi Beach sits just across the street and there are cafes and pubs along the seafront for when you fancy a refreshment. Slightly further afield, there are opportunities for birdwatching in RSPB Ynys-hir and Dyfi Osprey Project, both taking around half an hour to reach in the car.

Bordering the rolling hills of Snowdonia National Park, this apartment set in a converted stable block provides the perfect remote retreat for those craving solitude and tranquillity. Overlooking the Dyfi Estuary, this modern home can serve as an excellent base for nearby hiking and walking with acres of landscaped grounds surrounded by woodlands. Inside, there's a sleek island kitchen that's perfect for country weekends away, as well as a large enclosed deck patio to enjoy a barbecue in the great outdoors – plus a jaw-dropping view we can vouch for. This impeccably designed home has all the trappings of a modern family home, but it's set in a centuries-old converted farm building. Taking full advantage of its stunning rural setting, it's all about sociable, open spaces, big windows and beautiful views. Perfectly placed to offer the best of the coast (it's just two miles to the beach) and Snowdonia, it's a great spot for exploring this beautiful area. 

Inside, you're greeted by crisp, contemporary design, bright white walls and wood floors – with cosy underfloor heating to the entrance level. There's a comfortable living room with a rather stylish log burner in the corner and picture windows, while a few steps down leads through to our favourite room in the house – a vast kitchen and dining space with A-frame beams and a dual aspect. Open it right up to the patio on either side for evening barbecues or summer breakfasts.

Elsewhere, each of the three bedrooms comes with an en-suite and we love the vaulted ceilings and far-reaching views across the fields and hills from the upstairs rooms.

With its peaceful setting in stunning countryside, we could feel our cares melting away as soon as we set foot through the door. Relax in the enclosed garden with its private hot tub – the perfect spot for a glass of bubbly. Or dine under the gazebo, whatever the weather. Inside, there’s a plush blue velvet sofa to rest on after a long country walk. Or whip up some Welsh rarebit in the sleek kitchen with its granite work surfaces.

Out and about, the beautiful sands and dunes of Ynyslas are 4 miles away, if you fancy a walk on the beach, a picnic or a spot of windsurfing, while a little further is Borth with its pubs and shops. The Victorian university town of Aberystwyth, on the other hand, is a ten-minute drive from this lovely home. Have an amble along the promenade, or take a ride on the Cliff Railway and savour the vistas over Cardigan Bay.

It was recently renovated, blending modern comforts with country life. But really, our favourite bit is the view you're treated to through the brightening patio doors and windows. So, whether you're eating breakfast around the table or preparing meals in the kitchen, you never have to miss out on the scenery that makes this home so special. 

Being in Snowdonia National Park, you're not short of hiking trails. And if you're feeling adventurous, you're just a twenty-minute drive from Wales' second-largest mountain, Cader Idris. If you want to explore towns and villages of the North Wales coast, you're in the right place – Fairbourne is just a fifteen-minute drive away, a small but charming seaside village, where you can hop on a water taxi or steam train to the bustling seaside town of Barmouth. 

However you spend the day, you'll love coming home to your cosy cottage. Wrap up and sip downers out on the patio, taking in the breathtaking sunset with panoramic views of the rolling hills and mountains. In the small village of Llanfarian, set in its own enclosed grounds in this detached cottage with a private hot tub, wood-burning fire, and gardens with a patio and outdoor dining area. The popular seaside town of Aberystwyth is less than three miles away where you can enjoy two beaches, a promenade with the oldest pier in Wales, a medieval castle, and a cliff railway with incredible views and the biggest camera obscura in the world. Take full advantage of direct access to the Ystwyth bike trail from the cottage – which links Aberystwyth to Tregaron in the foothills of the Cambrian Mountains. 

After a busy morning of exploring and sightseeing, we would love to enjoy Welsh cakes from the welcome basket alfresco in the garden. Then, after dinner, unwind in the hot tub with the bottle of prosecco, before cwtching up on the sofa in front of the wood-burning fire.

Overlooking patchwork rolling hills, the private patio is an ideal spot for morning coffees and evening glasses of wine. Inside, colourful soft furnishings liven up the neutral colour scheme – we particularly loved the pops of orange in the living space. 

Try your hand at recreating classic Welsh dishes in the fully-equipped kitchen or jump in the car and take the short drive to Machynlleth for a bite to eat in one of the fantastic restaurants. Admire the exhibitions in the Museum of Modern Art before taking the twenty-five-minute car ride to Aberdyfi, a pretty seaside village where the River Dyfi meets the clear waters of Cardigan Bay.

With views across the Wye Valley, it's set on five acres of pristine land and has nine bedrooms for you to choose between – either in the beautifully restored and extended 17th-Century farmhouse or the stunning new guest annexe. 

Lovers of interior design will have a field day here. It's been impeccably put together by its owner Kari, a professional designer, with nods to traditional country chic, contemporary cool and even Antipodean modern rustic – Kari grew up in Australia. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions. And if you fancy an action-packed break, your host can put together a unique itinerary for your group. You're bound to make memories that last a lifetime.

Slow down at this Welsh cottage set in the slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog fringing the mighty Snowdonia National Park. Inside, the original period features of this slate-clad home have been carefully restored to create a modern family home boasting comfortable interiors. The welcome hamper stuffed with local goodies is a nice touch, and outside, there's an enclosed terrace to savour morning cuppas. Parking on the road outside the cottage can be tricky, but with a free car park nearby, we don't think it's a dealbreaker. When you're ready for an adventure, Snowdonia National Park is just a short drive away. Or stay local and climb the surrounding Moelwynion Mountains to reach Stiniog –⁠ the views are worth the climb.

In the idyllic mining own of Blaenau Ffestiniog, this home was once an old chapel dating back to 1861. The building has been lovingly renovated, featuring an open-plan kitchen and snug area ideal for family living. There’s a pool table here too, which is boung to keep both the kids and grown-ups entertained for a few hours. When it comes to things to see and do, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to activities. We recommend heading into town to rent bikes and exploring some of the many biking routes on offer, which will have you riding past old quarries, lakes and rivers.

Perched on the banks of the Teifi estuary, this renovated former sea captain's villa in southwest Wales treats guests to some spectacular waterside views. On sunny days, these can be enjoyed on the large terrace, whether that's reclining in one of the loungers, lying in the hammock or sitting around the alfresco dining area, waiting for dinner to be served off the barbecue or out of the pizza oven. However, the sparkly panorama can just as easily be appreciated from the huge windows in the open-concept kitchen-dining area or from the bedrooms. When you can prise your eyes away from the beautiful scene outside, you'll find a modern interior that integrates rustic aspects, such as exposed brickwork and a wood-burning fireplace, seamlessly. When you're ready to explore, make a beeline for Aberystwyth's historic castle or ascend Britain's longest funicular electric cliff railway to Constitution Hill. Built a few years ago, this beautiful conversion may still bear some resemblance to a barn with its stone clad facade, but that’s where the similarities end. Inside you’ll find simple, clean lines and, apart from a few pops of colour, a fairly neutral colour palette. Stylish, and clearly modern, the home’s crowning glory is the wide expanse of green that can be admired from the front door. Stare out over the beautiful dips and peaks as you take your seat at the wrought-iron table outside and nurse your first cup of coffee of the day. 

Breakfast can also be enjoyed out here if you prefer, although the wood dining table in the living space is elegant, and with its position right next to a window, you don’t entirely lose sight of the scenic views on offer. 

With a real focus on reconnecting you with nature, most of the ground floor rooms open up to let the fresh country air in – take a nap on the cushy bed with the doors ajar and wake up refreshed. 

Walk the grounds or watch the little ones run around on the lawn whilst you enjoy a glass of wine in a sun lounger. This is also a great spot for sunsets, but before that, you can drive out and explore the rural Welsh beauty of this area, you might want to stop off at the Rhug Estate Farm Shop and drive-thru, about six minutes away, to refuel before perhaps enjoy two splendid nearby reservoir walks: Brenig and Alwyn

You'll find this handsome stone cottage in a rural hamlet right on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, just a thirty-minute drive from the base of the famous mountain. There's a lovely view of this hilly terrain from the home's private garden, which comes with a gas barbecue and plenty of seating for when the weather plays ball. Inside, there are both rustic and modern aspects. A log-burning fire sits in the corner of the living space, for example, but the kitchen has a Quooker tap for instant boiling water and the bathrooms would be right at home in any slick urban apartment. However, we all know that it's the great outdoors that's the big attraction in Wales and there are endless adventures to be had on your doorstep. Both Criccieth and Aberdesach beaches can be reached in under a quarter of an hour in the car, while you can also visit the old slate mines at Blaenau Ffestiniog, only a half-hour drive away.
