Surrounded by peaceful countryside, this barn conversion is cosy, comfortable and a pleasure to return to after long hikes through the Snowdonia National Park. Overlooking patchwork rolling hills, the private patio is an ideal spot for morning coffees and evening glasses of wine. Inside, colourful soft furnishings liven up the neutral colour scheme – we particularly loved the pops of orange in the living space. 

Try your hand at recreating classic Welsh dishes in the fully-equipped kitchen or jump in the car and take the short drive to Machynlleth for a bite to eat in one of the fantastic restaurants. Admire the exhibitions in the Museum of Modern Art before taking the twenty-five-minute car ride to Aberdyfi, a pretty seaside village where the River Dyfi meets the clear waters of Cardigan Bay.

Maybe it’s the sound of the Dysynni River babbling past your door. Or it could be those sweeping views of the dramatic Welsh mountains that greet you from the moment you arrive. Either way, there’s something instantly calming about this farmhouse set at the foot of Snowdonia in North Wales. 

Step inside, and this is the ultimate Welsh dream cottage – with exposed beams, chocolate-box windows, a made-for-action Aga cooker, and an inglenook fireplace at its heart. While upstairs, the serene bedrooms are pared back and unfussy, letting those pretty garden scenes and magnificent mountain panoramas seen through every bedroom window do all the talking. 

When it’s time to don your walking boots and get out exploring, you’re spoilt for choice here. Cadair Idris, the highest mountain in Southern Snowdonia, is on your doorstep – as is Castell y Bere, with its historical ruins strung along the foot of the mountains. Or, pack up a beach bag and head to the vast shores of Tywyn for a wander along its five miles of sandy beaches backed by a promenade and dunes. When tummies start to rumble, nip into the dinky seaside village of Aberdyfi (a twenty-minute drive) for lip-smacking fish and chip suppers, homemade ice cream and a paddle along its golden shores – it’s all as charming as it sounds.

Swap the noise of daily humdrum with the soft sounds of a babbling brook and birdsong at this Welsh gem of a home, set high in the Mid Wales hillsides overlooking a river and woodlands fringing Cwmllinau village.

From way up here in this restful nook of the world, you could feel a million miles from anywhere – which is just how we like things. But if you fancy spreading your wings, you’re central to Snowdonia National Park and Cardigan Bay for inspiring days out, as well as the postcard-pretty market towns of Machynlleth and Dolgellau for all the Welsh charm you’re chasing. And even closer to home, the charming village of Cwmllinau (1.2 miles away) with its traditional inn for swift pints and a warm welcome.

Back home, the enormous beauty outside is taking centre stage – and don’t the homeowners know it. They recently installed bi-fold doors leading out onto an impressive elevated terrace to make the very best of its setting. It’s a stunning spot to sit back and admire the tranquil views and multitude of birds that visit the feeding stand. 

Indoors, the cottage’s old bones are beautifully restored to make this home sing with Welsh slate floors, exposed stonework, and oak beams. While a luxurious freestanding slipper bath and wood-burning fire (the underfloor heating keeps things toasty too) are the cherry on the top.

The majestic mountain views of Cadair Idris took our breath away when we visited this secluded home. Clad in Virginia creeper that turns a stunning fiery red in the autumn, this cottage, surrounded by farmland, is as pretty as a picture. It’s a paradise for bird watchers with an array of wildlife, or if you’re a fan of planes, you can enjoy watching them from the garden as the valley is a training area for aircraft. 

When night falls do a spot of star gazing here, the dark skies reveal a multitude of sparkling jewels. The incredible vistas can be enjoyed from inside too, or gather around the wood burner in the inglenook fireplace when the weather turns chilly. 

Out and about, explore Snowdonia National Park, including Dolgellau, a fifteen-minute drive. Or, for a day by the coast, head to Tywyn on Cardigan Bay, around thirty minutes in the car.

Right in the heart of Dolgellau, this home makes for an excellent base for exploring the nearby mountains, villages, forest and coastline. If you want to get out and see the Great Outdoors, this is a marvellous choice indeed. You can walk nine miles from your front door along an old railway line to reach Barmouth and its pretty beach, where you’ll tuck into fish and chips and breathe in the sea air. The walking route to Cader Idris in Southern Snowdonia is just fifteen minutes away, ideal for experienced hikers. Mountain bikers can head to Coes-y-Brenin Forest Park to let off steam. For a gentler excursion, you might stroll to the local shops, to a cafe for lunch, or to a pub for a post-hike pint. 

After a day spent outdoors, you couldn’t ask for a more warm or welcoming home to return to. Rest your weary feet in front of the log burner in the inglenook fireplace, or curl up in the reading nook with a book and a cuppa. Quiet and secluded, but just a fifteen-minute walk from popular Corris, this lovely lodge has been completely refurbished to create a comfortable rural home. The owners, James and Sophie, live up at the main house and they've put a great deal of care into it. Heated with a ground source heat pump, laid out using the rules of Feng Shui and designed to be as cosy and welcoming as possible, this place will appeal to keen cyclists, walkers and those of us who just want to escape for a bit. Surrounded by pine forest, with a river running opposite, it's in the Dyfi Valley, with the Dyfi bike park just a ten-minute drive. A traditional slate building, the inside is modern and practical. Cosy up on the sofas in front of the fire (a basket of logs is provided), cook in the smart kitchen and eat at the contemporary dining table – it's all one sociable space. There's a bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor, with two more upstairs with sloping ceilings and skylights. In the summer, step out onto your patio with a cup of coffee each morning and just listen to the birds. A short walk away there's a public park – perfect for dog walks – and you can stroll into town to the cafe and pub.

The town of Dolgellau is among the most picturesque in Eryri and much of that is down to the abundance of stone homes dotted across the map, including this cottage.

It may look rustic at first glance but step behind the front door and you'll find a pretty contemporary address – save for the traditional stone fireplace in the living room, which we're glad has been retained. Otherwise, the design is fresh and bright, with plenty of perks – the small games room will keep youngsters entertained for a couple of hours at least, while grown-ups can perhaps make the most of this tranquillity with a soak in the pink bathroom's tub.

However, if the weather's on your side, you can choose instead to head outside and luxuriate in the Jacuzzi on the terrace. You can also dine out here, complete with a view of Cader Idris to keep you company. This mountain peak is one of many in the surrounding National Park that are easily reachable for long rambles, but it also only takes twenty minutes to reach the Barmouth seaside if you're ever in the mood for a beach day.

On chillier nights, you can snuggle up around the fireplace with a good book or challenge family members to a board game under the wooden beamed ceilings. Fancy a stroll through the countryside? There are plenty of walks leading right from your doorstep. If you need some supplies then the market town of Dolgellau is just a mile away – visit the boutiques, cafés and traditional inns on foot. For a blast of sea air, Abermaw Beach in Barmouth, less than a twenty-five-minute drive from home, has golden sands which are perfect for basking or swimming. And let’s not forget the thrill seekers – the popular peak of Cader Idris is under a half-hour drive away, as well as the largest mountain bike trail centre in the UK – Coed y Brenin. Lovely indoors or the great outdoors, this one has you covered. 

Sights Of Snowdonia

You're stepping back in time when you step inside this cottage in the ancient market town of Machynlleth. Centuries old, it's built from local stone and sits on a quiet side street in the centre of town – an easy walk from its restaurants, shops and cosy pubs.

What it lacks in outside space, it more than makes up for in character, with slate floors, a mix of old and new beams and an antique sideboard in the entrance hall. The layout has been turned upside-down to make the most of the vast, vaulted room above, so you'll find the bedrooms and bathroom on the ground floor here, and we particularly love the twin bedroom with its gigantic inglenook. 

Climbing the stairs, you come to the main living space – a sociable, open-plan room that takes up the whole top floor. Packed with beams, and with oak floors, it's a pretty special room, with a cosy seating area, dining table and modern kitchen. Not known for their large windows, this medieval gem has also had a skylight added to boost the natural light.

Embrace a slower pace of life, tucked into the idyllic Dyfi Valley, surrounded by the rolling hills of Northern Wales. This cottage feels like a storybook getaway, with a garden dotted with vibrant foliage and a soothing stream passing by. It's the perfect place to switch off and soak in the beauty of the great outdoors, with the vast Snowdonia National Park on your doorstep. 

This quaint cottage is as beautiful inside as it is on the outside, a mix of stucco walls and traditional stone brick. We love the cosy living room, with wood-beamed ceilings, a stone brick wall, and a crackling wood-burning fireplace. It's warm and inviting – the ideal place for relaxing and watching the TV after a day on your feet. It might be a traditional cottage, but the kitchen is sleek, contemporary, and big enough for everyone to pitch in to help prepare meals. While there's something comforting and familial about preparing meals together and then eating around the kitchen table, we imagine you'll also love the outdoor dining table. 

The garden is surrounded by luscious, beautiful greenery, where you can spend lazy mornings tucking into a continental breakfast out in the fresh air, enjoying the comforting sounds of the chirping birds and the babbles of the stream. When you're energised after a hearty breakfast, the historic market town of Machynlleth is just a twelve-minute drive away. There are endless walking trails around here, or simply explore the town's art galleries, quaint shops, cafes, pubs, museums, and more. And if you want to take a walk along the coast, you're within easy reach of North Wales' blustering beaches. 

Across the Footbridge

Machynlleth is a melting pot of people and interests, making it a unique place to visit. So, what better accommodation for a trip to this quirky town than a medieval house? This home will whisk you back in time with its wooden beams, stone fireplaces and antique curiosities. Luckily the kitchen has had a 21st-century update, but the grand hall is still an imposing place to feast with your family. Culture vultures can wander the streets of Machynlleth, popping into antique shops and local galleries before pausing for a refreshment in one of the cosy pubs. Meanwhile outdoorsy types will be just as content venturing into Snowdonia National Park, where they can explore valleys and peaks on foot or by bike. And the sea is not far away either – a short drive will bring you to the turquoise waters of Aberdyfi Beach.

A Medieval Banquet

Surrounded by rolling countryside, this home is for those who love the great outdoors. The split first floor is a nice touch, allowing extra privacy for guests. And for those with limited mobility, the ground-floor bedroom and bathroom will have them resting easily. Located 3.5 miles from Machynlleth, you have shops, cafes and restaurants on your doorstep. Fancy some home cooking? Pop along to the Wednesday market for some fresh local produce. As the oldest street market in Britain, it’s well worth a visit.

Nestled in a private setting within the village of Cwmllinau, this authentic stone cottage is a wonderful retreat for the mind and body. Spend mornings in the lounge with the bi-fold doors open watching birds gather on the bird feeder, and afternoons on the terrace sharing meals and laughs around the dining table while lush green trees surround you. Our favourite part of this home is the garden, which backs onto a stream. The kids will love whiling away time splashing around in the water. No matter where you choose to spend your time, you'll always be treated to the beautiful surround sound of nature. When the light fades, head inside and listen to the crackle of the woodburner while you enjoy a gin & tonic with your loved one.

While the nature around this home is wonderful, the nature further afield in this part of Wales is just as spectacular. Snowdonia National Park is one of this country's prized gems offering incredible hiking opportunities and endless views. You can be inside the park in less than thirty minutes. Spend the day admiring the landscape before returning back to the cottage for a cosy evening in.

At the foot of wild Cader Idris mountain, this home is surrounded by silent countryside. The Grade II listed building was built as a farmhouse in the early 19th century and has since become a haven for those looking for some peace and quiet. It’s full of traditional touches, from the exposed beams and roll-top bath to the slate fireplace and wood-burning stove in the old hearth. On arrival, a welcome pack of tea, coffee and local treats awaits in the country-style kitchen. Outside the view takes centre stage, with the green fields giving way to rugged peaks. Savour that panorama with a drink at the picnic area. Hikers and walkers will be glad to know that Snowdonia’s epic landscapes are on your doorstep, as you’re in the south of the sprawling National Park. There are trails suitable for seasoned pros and newbies alike. The golden beach of Abermaw in Barmouth is also close by (a twenty-minute drive) for those fancying some sea air. When you’re craving sustenance, stroll into nearby Dolgellau (less than 2 miles away) for some drinks and tasty pub grub.

Tucked away down a quiet country lane lies this comfortable and cosy barn conversion, just outside Dolgellau. Wake up each morning to dramatic mountain views through the bedroom’s Velux window, and on sunny days, enjoy a leisurely breakfast alfresco in the south-facing garden which offers uninterrupted panoramas of the impressive Cadair Idris mountain range. 

This home is a great base to explore southern Snowdonia with plenty of walks and cycle trails not far away from your door. Plus, Abermaw beach at Barmouth is just nine miles away where you can bathe in the sun, wander the village or even have a go at paddleboarding. 

In the evening, we would love to fire up the barbecue for an alfresco meal, accompanied by vistas of woodland and mountains. Then get cosy for a night snuggled up on the sofa, warming your feet on the underfloor heating.

Sitting in the middle of the tiny Snowdonian village of Dinas Mawddwy, this building was once the locale's Wesleyan chapel, but today it's been respectfully converted into a rather remarkable place to stay.

Plenty of the period features remain, including the original brickwork, pew seats at the dining table and the tall lancet windows that look out to Welsh hillsides, as well as bathing the interior with natural light. However, it's also fair to say that the living quarters have been brought up to the standards expected from 21st-century travellers, particularly in the case of the super-sleek kitchen and the large games room complete with tables for pool and foosball.

Despite this architectural setting, some of the biggest perks lie outside the stone walls. Not only is there a terrace on which to sit out around the fire pit, but guests are also treated to a hot tub, which is naturally the best seat from which to admire the stunning surroundings. 

It's fair to say that those fond of the great outdoors couldn't wish for a better location. Cader Idris is ten miles away if you're in the mood for a challenging hike, while it doesn't take too long to reach the coastline when the weather calls for a day on the beach. Closer to home – much closer in fact – the village has a local gastropub only a minute's walk from the front door.

Recently renovated, this home's interior balances contemporary and authenticity – with a sleek kitchen, elegant bedrooms and tiled bathrooms sitting beneath original wooden ceiling beams and alongside rugged stonework. Whether you're tucked up in the armchairs underneath a fur throw with your new book or curling up for a family film night, this home is the definition of cosy – especially when you throw a log or two on the wood-burning fire. We think kids will be happy here, too – with a games room complete with a pool table, kids and adults alike will enjoy afternoons here. At mealtimes, come together around the dining table for a home-cooked feast though, in the summer, we expect you’ll be firing up the barbecue and dining alfresco on the patio.

Outside, there's a private garden with seating and views of rolling hills and an additional courtyard to the back that's shared with neighbours – the kids will love the play area too. Spend your days voyaging through the glorious grounds – there’s fishing on the lakes and riverside walks on your doorstep. And, of course, there’s the footpaths leading to the mighty Cadair Iris, the highest mountain in Southern Snowdonia. Don your hiking boots to discover its glacial lakes and lofty viewpoints alive in folklore tales of giants, dragons, and heroes.

When it’s time to drop back down to earth and meet the locals, the neighbouring village of Dorgellau (a six-minute drive away) is a fine place to start with its local inns for hearty grub and a warm welcome.

You’ll feel welcome as soon as you open the door, thanks to the traditional details and warm, inviting atmosphere. The kitchen is a home cook's dream, with an AGA and exposed wooden beams, while the open-plan layout is the perfect setting to enjoy some hearty meals, drinks, and good company. You'll be spoiled for choice with three lounges, one of which has an original inglenook fireplace with a wood burner where you can cosy up with a good film. If you fancy a day trip, a thirty-minute drive will take you to Coed y Brenin Forest Park, where there are hiking trails through the beautiful scenery. Set in the Dyfi Valley, this converted barn has fabulous views across the valley to the Cambrian Mountains. Relax on the patio and make use of the barbecue on warm evenings. From your doorstep you can set off on epic hikes or plan a cycling route across the hills. Get up early and watch the sunrise across the valley, or stay up late and get lost in Wales' famously starry skies. Challenge your friends and family in the games room or play pooh sticks with the kids on the little bridge down the lane. Many of this area's big attractions are within an easy drive, so you can tick off things like climbing Snowdon, exploring an old slate mine, swimming in the sea at Barmouth or riding one of the Connis Railway steam trains.

Spend mornings curled up on a plump leather armchair with a good book before preparing a full Welsh breakfast in the rustic kitchen. 

When lunchtime rolls around, enjoy a picnic in the garden or take the short drive to Machynlleth for a pub lunch followed by a cup of coffee in a cosy cafe. If you’re keen to stretch your legs, embark on the hike from Dolgellau to Cadair Idris, the highest mountain in southern Snowdonia.

Head back to your abode, worn out and windswept, to warm your toes in front of the wood-burning stove as you reflect on the day’s adventures.

Set in a prime position surrounded by woodland just outside of charming Machynlleth, this converted stable building is the ideal location for small groups or family gatherings in the heart of rugged Snowdonia. This pet-friendly property features traditional farmhouse interiors, with high beamed ceilings, a woodburning stove and Welsh slate flooring (upgraded with underfloor heating to accommodate the unpredictable climate!) adding authentic touches of character. Slouchy sofas invite you to settle in with a great book, while a large farmhouse dining table is the ideal spot for a family gathering at the end of each day. A footpath leading from the stable’s expansive gardens leads you to Llyn Ruck lake, where you can marvel at panoramic views of the Dyfi Estuary and Cardigan Bay beyond.

This rural cottage puts Snowdonia National Park on your doorstep. Built with traditional Welsh stone, what first drew our attention here was the panoramic views of Cader Idris. The best spot to enjoy them is the garden's picnic table, but nearly every room boasts a scenic outlook. Even the living area offers a glimpse of the mountains – and with the wood burner crackling away, it's the definition of cosy. Most of all, though, we love the location. Only one mile from Dolgellau, you'll have easy access to The Mawddach Trail (perfect for cycling) and Barmouth Beach (9 miles away) – not to mention a bevvy of walking and hiking routes to suit all abilities.

Ambler's Paradise

Admire the beautiful views of Cadair Idris from this charming and traditional Welsh cottage – the sweeping vistas really did take our breath away. Enjoy some bara brith with a cup of tea on the terrace, have a stroll around the large garden or relax in the airy conservatory. This home is the perfect retreat for a family or a group of friends looking for peace and tranquillity.

Out and about, there’s plenty to see. The pretty market town of Dolgellau, known for its stone buildings, excellent restaurants, and great walks, such as the Mawddach Trail, is 2 miles away. Other attractions, such as the sandy beaches at Barmouth and Fairbourne and many of Snowdonia’s premier sights, are also easily reachable.


 Sweeping Valleys & Peaks

This stone cottage in Snowdonia National Park will suit hiking, mountain biking and horse riding enthusiasts alike. Located on a working sheep farm with the homeowner’s bed and breakfast nearby, you wouldn’t know that the market town, Dolgellau is only a forty-minute walk away. Historically, it was known for the woollen and tanning industry. It is now known for having the oldest cricket club in Wales but, more prominently, Cadair Idris’ base camp. If you’re more of a beachgoer, take the great Mawddach trail down to the seaside town of Barmouth – less than a twenty-minute drive from home. You’re also a half-hour drive from the largest lake in Wales – Llyn Tegid. And after an explorative day full of adventure, return to your cosy cottage with heaps of bucolic charm. Stoke up the fire and settle down for a lovely evening under the wooden beamed ceilings. We especially love the farmhouse style doors and warm wooden furniture – you’d think you were in the farmhouse itself. The quaint country-style kitchen is the perfect place to prepare your picnic and graze on the groomed meadow outside. Even with so much to do, why not get the most of the peaceful space and focus on a spot R&R?

Dolgellau Dale Cottage

Experience the dramatic scenery of Mid Wales in all its glory at this old hayloft conversion. Located in the wildlife-rich Dyfi Valley, there's a real sense of isolation here, with what feels like all the time in the world to soak up those incredible views. Vast oak beams, local slate and exposed stone features hark back to the building's former life as a hayloft. This home can optionally be split into two: each half has two or three bedrooms apiece, a kitchen and a living and dining areas. We think it works well for two independent families travelling together. The prime attraction here is if course getting out into the great outdoors. There's hiking, cycling, pony riding, golfing and bird-watching to pick from (the RSBP Ynys-hir national reserve is close by). The vibrant market town of Machynlleth – home to antique stores, bookshops, art galleries and Wales’ original 15th century parliament (now a museum) – is also just a short drive away. On your return, warm up beside the log burner or pop open the bubbly and fire up the barbecue for an alfresco meal overlooking the Cambrian Mountains. 

The Old Hayloft

Transport back in time as you reside in this cosy and historical cottage. Wooden beams adorn the ceilings, with a gorgeous traditional stone fireplace positioned in the middle of the living space. Curl up in an armchair next to the roaring fire as you read a brand new book, or snuggle up together with your loved ones on the sofa as you watch a comedy show on TV. 

The lovely kitchen is the perfect spot to whip up a freshly baked Victoria sponge or a hearty portion of Shepherd's Pie. The wooden dining table is next to the fireplace, where you can tuck into tasty plates of food, washed down with a sumptuously rich bottle of red. Unwind with a bubble bath during the evenings with a flute of champagne, followed by an evening spent sitting on the grass as you watch the sunset.

Head out to explore the local area, where you can wander through the rural countryside as you spot the beautiful wildlife. Spend your days going on hikes under the sun as you breathe in the fresh air, miles away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

This home is rooted in the Welsh countryside as firmly as the windswept trees on the hills outside. Just a fifteen-minute drive from the border of the outstanding Snowdonia National Park, and the same distance to the town of Machynlleth, this converted barn offers an isolated retreat in Mid Wales. From the exterior, this stone farmhouse oozes rustic charm with a modern edge. The space inside uses enormous glass windows to bring light and air into this historic space, with luxurious underfloor heating throughout the entire ground floor for chilly mornings. But the interior designer couldn’t resist leaving gorgeous original features like exposed stone walls, chunky, oak beams, and a wood-burning fireplace. Take a seat in the plush lounge and tuck into your pack of Welsh goodies (a gift from your host) as you look out to scenes of the Cambrian Mountains. While we love these rolling landscapes surrounding the grounds, we also really like the alfresco dining set on the private patio and courtyard. This is the perfect spot for a chilled glass of champagne to celebrate your holiday – there’s always tomorrow for hiking.

Characterful and cosy, this charming coastal retreat is mere steps away from Aberdyfi Beach. The crashing waves are so close you can almost touch them from the living area – in fact, you can sit at the dining table and see the beach out the big windows. It's the perfect spot to savour a glass of wine and people-watch, but with the art galleries, restaurants and the sea on your doorstep, you'll surely be tempted out. On rainy days, curl up with a book on the squishy sofas, play a board game or two, or just snooze the afternoon away in the two comfortable bedrooms. The kitchen has everything you'll need to rustle up delicious dinners, and there are plenty of shops nearby to stock up on ingredients and fresh seafood. Aberdovey is a small seaside village on the harbour, but there's plenty nearby to keep you entertained – be it crabbing on the jetty, sea rowing at the rowing club or nibbling on fish and chips at a beachside picnic. But for more action-packed adventures, hike the picturesque Wales Coast Path or roam the nature reserves in Snowdonia National Park – the ancient woodland in Ceunant Llennyrch National Nature Reserve is an hour's drive.

The first thing you'll notice pulling up at this farmhouse is the thirty-five acres of private grounds – stunning greenery wraps around you, making it a fantastic option for those who love bringing their pets along with them for idyllic countryside walks. Just outside the home, there's a peaceful garden, complete with flourishing plant beds and a picnic bench from which to enjoy the peace and quiet of the North Walian countryside. Indoors, the mix of oak beam ceilings and slate floors gives a cosy, lived-in atmosphere, particularly at night with the log-burner in the inglenook fireplace roaring. Out the bedroom windows, there's a view of Cadair Idris, a mountain at the southern-most end of Snowdonia. This is rustic living at its most picturesque, a world away from the city, and you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to rural pursuits. In the local area, there's everything from salmon fishing on the River Wnion to cycling the country roads to paying a visit to nearby Dolgellau for fresh produce from the farmers' market — just over an hour away on foot or eight minutes in the car. Venturing further afield, Snowdon sits an hour's drive to the north if you fancy a more demanding challenge.

The bridge was built in 1879 as a replacement for a ferry crossing and the cottage is said to have been added to around the 1900s. The cottage can sleep up to two guests, with a kitchen, dining and lounge nestled around the cosy log burner, perfect for an evening in around the fire.
