You'll find this cottage at the gateway to the breathtaking Snowdonia National Park. Set in a small rural hamlet, it has a large private garden and incredible panoramic views of the rolling Welsh hills and valleys. Aimed squarely at lovers of the great outdoors, it's a perfect base for exploring Snowdonia and hiking the famous mountains. Visit Lake Vyrnwy and Llyn Tegid for watersports or head to the nearby Dyfi Forest for some challenging mountain bike trails. 

On colder evenings, logs are provided for the cosy wood burner in the living room. On summer days there's a sunroom to relax in, as well as garden furniture and a barbecue outside. The home is in an International Dark Sky Reserve, so prepare to spend your nights gazing at some of the clearest starry skies Wales has to offer.

Sitting in the middle of the tiny Snowdonian village of Dinas Mawddwy, this building was once the locale's Wesleyan chapel, but today it's been respectfully converted into a rather remarkable place to stay.

Plenty of the period features remain, including the original brickwork, pew seats at the dining table and the tall lancet windows that look out to Welsh hillsides, as well as bathing the interior with natural light. However, it's also fair to say that the living quarters have been brought up to the standards expected from 21st-century travellers, particularly in the case of the super-sleek kitchen and the large games room complete with tables for pool and foosball.

Despite this architectural setting, some of the biggest perks lie outside the stone walls. Not only is there a terrace on which to sit out around the fire pit, but guests are also treated to a hot tub, which is naturally the best seat from which to admire the stunning surroundings. 

It's fair to say that those fond of the great outdoors couldn't wish for a better location. Cader Idris is ten miles away if you're in the mood for a challenging hike, while it doesn't take too long to reach the coastline when the weather calls for a day on the beach. Closer to home – much closer in fact – the village has a local gastropub only a minute's walk from the front door.

If you’re looking for the ideal cottage for a family holiday in the Welsh countryside, then this is it. Nestled in the lush, green Cywarch Valley, your only neighbours are the occasional flock of sheep. The sitting room is a lovely spot for admiring your surroundings from inside the home after a day of hiking – though we think you'll spend most of your time out in the garden, enjoying lunches on the patio and drinking wine while taking it all in.

From way up here in this restful nook of the world, you could feel a million miles from anywhere – which is just how we like things. But if you fancy spreading your wings, you’re central to Snowdonia National Park and Cardigan Bay for inspiring days out, as well as the postcard-pretty market towns of Machynlleth and Dolgellau for all the Welsh charm you’re chasing. Sunny mornings call for breakfast under the sunny pergola. Then take a dip in the bubbly hot tub to drink up the views with a cheeky glass of mimosa, just because you can. Kids (and big kids) can always burn off some energy with a kick about on the nearby paddock under your watchful eye from the terrace or muck about in the games barn, complete with a pool table. 

If you fancy a change of scene, the national walking trail of Glyndwr's Way starts right from your door for wild walks through rolling farmland, woodland, and forests. Try out the fairways of Welshpool Golf Course (half-an-hour drive). Or, a smidge further, there's bird watching and sailing to be enjoyed at Lake Vyrnwy.

Snowdonia National Park is one of this country's prized gems offering incredible hiking opportunities and endless views. You can be inside the park in less than thirty minutes. Spend the day admiring the landscape before returning back to the cottage for a cosy evening in.

You can't do better than this dreamy townhouse for a cosy escape to a beautiful part of Wales. It’s a historic home that’s been lovingly renovated to retain all its charm and character and to include all those home comforts you long for on holiday. 

Right in the heart of Dolgellau, this home makes for an excellent base for exploring the nearby mountains, villages, forest and coastline. If you want to get out and see the Great Outdoors, this is a marvellous choice indeed. You can walk nine miles from your front door along an old railway line to reach Barmouth and its pretty beach, where you’ll tuck into fish and chips and breathe in the sea air. The walking route to Cader Idris in Southern Snowdonia is just fifteen minutes away, ideal for experienced hikers. Mountain bikers can head to Coes-y-Brenin Forest Park to let off steam. For a gentler excursion, you might stroll to the local shops, to a cafe for lunch, or to a pub for a post-hike pint. 

After a day spent outdoors, you couldn’t ask for a more warm or welcoming home to return to. Rest your weary feet in front of the log burner in the inglenook fireplace, or curl up in the reading nook with a book and a cuppa. The lounge boasts vaulted ceilings and tall windows and is a lovely place to gather together. Play board games or get competitive playing table football. The main bedroom leads onto a decked balcony, and there’s also a pretty garden – you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing where to drink your morning coffee.

The town of Dolgellau is among the most picturesque in Eryri and much of that is down to the abundance of stone homes dotted across the map, including this cottage.

It may look rustic at first glance but step behind the front door and you'll find a pretty contemporary address – save for the traditional stone fireplace in the living room, which we're glad has been retained. Otherwise, the design is fresh and bright, with plenty of perks – the small games room will keep youngsters entertained for a couple of hours at least, while grown-ups can perhaps make the most of this tranquillity with a soak in the pink bathroom's tub.

However, if the weather's on your side, you can choose instead to head outside and luxuriate in the Jacuzzi on the terrace. You can also dine out here, complete with a view of Cader Idris to keep you company. This mountain peak is one of many in the surrounding National Park that are easily reachable for long rambles, but it also only takes twenty minutes to reach the Barmouth seaside if you're ever in the mood for a beach day.

Gloriously remote and offering jaw-dropping views toward Bala Lake, this lodge retreat on the eastern gateway to Snowdonia National Park is just what the doctor ordered. 

Sunny mornings call for lazy breakfasts on the deck to drink up the views of the Berwyn mountain. Then break up the morning with a soak in the bubbly hot tub, just because you can. And imagine this spot at dusk as the sun sets over Bala – that’s a memory right there.

On wintery days, hunker down inside where an Aga cooker keeps things toasty in the open-plan living space – those views of the mountains and lake will be right there with you. Or sneak away to the snug for a quiet read or cheeky afternoon loll. 

When it’s time to get out and about, join the friendly locals for a swift pint in the traditional inns of Bala (an easy twenty-minute walk away). For something more adventurous, give watersports a try on Bala Lake, the largest natural lake in Wales (a fifteen-minute walk). Just watch out for Teggie – Wales’ answer to the Loch Ness Monster. Or stay on dry land and give the lakeside steam train a whirl instead. 

Fancy spreading your wings a little further? The golden shores of Barmouth are an afternoon well spent (a forty-eight minute drive). And no visit to these mighty Welsh lands would be complete without a walk in the Snowdonia National park – it’s just a ten-minute drive from your door.

Built a few years ago, this beautiful conversion may still bear some resemblance to a barn with its stone clad facade, but that’s where the similarities end. Inside you’ll find simple, clean lines and, apart from a few pops of colour, a fairly neutral colour palette. Stylish, and clearly modern, the home’s crowning glory is the wide expanse of green that can be admired from the front door. Stare out over the beautiful dips and peaks as you take your seat at the wrought-iron table outside and nurse your first cup of coffee of the day. 

Breakfast can also be enjoyed out here if you prefer, although the wood dining table in the living space is elegant, and with its position right next to a window, you don’t entirely lose sight of the scenic views on offer. 

With a real focus on reconnecting you with nature, most of the ground floor rooms open up to let the fresh country air in – take a nap on the cushy bed with the doors ajar and wake up refreshed. 

Walk the grounds or watch the little ones run around on the lawn whilst you enjoy a glass of wine in a sun lounger. This is also a great spot for sunsets, but before that, you can drive out and explore the rural Welsh beauty of this area, you might want to stop off at the Rhug Estate Farm Shop and drive-thru, about six minutes away, to refuel before perhaps enjoy two splendid nearby reservoir walks: Brenig and Alwyn

Despite this functional heritage, you can safely banish any thoughts of cramped living quarters. Illuminated by a series of skylights, guests get access to a recently refitted kitchen that is plenty big enough for cooking up hearty dinners, as well as a lounge with comfy furnishings for sprawling out upon after long country walks. There is no shortage of outdoor pursuits to undertake in North Shropshire and just across the Welsh border, including wandering along the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, only twenty-four minutes away in the car. The Boat House gastropub on the outskirts of Ellesmere is only six minutes' walk away, too.

The house is just across the road from the beach, so each morning you’ll wake up to the sound of the sea gently rushing to shore. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room showcase the home’s prime beachfront location – if you’re anything like us, you’ll lose track of how long you spend gazing at the peaceful view. There aren't many homes in our collection where you could feasibly arrive by kayak rather than by car, but this is one of them. Perched on the side of the Menai Strait, this four-storey gem dates back to the Victorian era and benefits from beautiful views of the sea, Bangor Pier and the Snowdonia mountain range. This can be enjoyed from the big bay windows or the comfort of the outdoor terrace. Better still, you can head down to the home's private shingle beach which also has a small cave to explore. Back inside the home, the interior is traditional, with portraits hanging on the walls and a large wooden dining table a regal centrepiece to gather the group around after the day's excursions. The town of Beaumaris with its castle, pier and beach take just six minutes to reach in the car, while you can get to Penrhyn Zip World in twenty minutes if you're looking for hi-octane thrills.

When the weather permits, it's easy to pass hours out in the open air thanks to the seating on the covered terrace and the barbecue ready and waiting for summer feasts. Stokesay Castle is five minutes' drive down the road, while the charming country town of Church Stretton is ten minutes in the other direction.

This barn conversion in deepest Herefordshire is bursting with rural authenticity. Not only is the property located close to a peaceful nature reserve complete with lakes, but it's also been Grade-II listed to protect its historical importance. However, despite this impressive pedigree, the home's interior is pretty contemporary, with a sleek kitchen, four-poster bedrooms and tiled bathrooms sitting quite comfortably underneath the original wooden ceiling beams. Out the front, there's a private garden with seating and views of hills and forests, but there's also an additional courtyard to the back that's shared with neighbours. If gazing out at the countryside vista inspires you to explore this beautiful county, you're well-placed for bird-spotting and long rambles, perhaps finished with a meal at The Stagg Inn, a well-praised gastropub that sits no more than two minute's walk from your front door.

The majestic mountain views of Cadair Idris took our breath away when we visited this secluded home. Clad in Virginia creeper that turns a stunning fiery red in the autumn, this cottage, surrounded by farmland, is as pretty as a picture. It’s a paradise for bird watchers with an array of wildlife, or if you’re a fan of planes, you can enjoy watching them from the garden as the valley is a training area for aircraft. 

When night falls do a spot of star gazing here, the dark skies reveal a multitude of sparkling jewels. The incredible vistas can be enjoyed from inside too, or gather around the wood burner in the inglenook fireplace when the weather turns chilly. 

Out and about, explore Snowdonia National Park, including Dolgellau, a fifteen-minute drive. Or, for a day by the coast, head to Tywyn on Cardigan Bay, around thirty minutes in the car.





Cadair Idris Vistas

With five bedrooms, a long sycamore dining table and luscious green lawns, there’s no excuse for not inviting the whole family for a trip to this Welsh farmhouse. The 16th-century building is full of historical details – look out for the old baking oven, chapel benches and even a coat of arms on the ceiling. Kids and teenagers will be glad to know they can escape to the den, complete with toys, bean bags and games – there’s even a games room, where young and old alike can get competitive playing table tennis and foosball. You can also head to the long sandy beaches of North Wales in less than half an hour by car, or pull on your hiking boots and enjoy a stunning walk through the Vale of Clwyd – it is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, after all.

This home might be a traditional farmhouse from the outside, but the interior is sleek, contemporary, and comfortable. Here, you can shed the daily grind and embrace a slower pace of life, while still keeping ahold of modern comforts. Lovely accents of green brighten up the home, which is cloaked in soothing shades of grey. But that's not to say it isn't without its traditional charm. The original stone fireplace stands in front of centre of the dining room, while the warmth of the wood burner permeates the home. You'd be hard-pressed to find somewhere as scenic and relaxing as the Llyn Peninsula. Walkers will revel in the famous Llyn Coastal Path, which leads you onto the lovely beaches of Porth Towyn and Porth Ysgaden. The area's Irish Sea stems off into emerald pools, backed by hills carpeted in lush grass and flowers – it's truly enchanting. The area is also teeming with quaint towns and villages, like Tudweiliog – just a twenty-minute stroll away.

The village of Tresaith on the Ceredigion coastline is relatively humble, but you can find some truly spectacular homes here – this three-storey gem is among them.

It's definitely an address that has been constructed with the surrounding scenery in mind, with sea views to be admired from the balconies and out through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Even to the rear of the house that isn't so blessed with coastal vistas, there's a peaceful terrace surrounded by flower beds and it's more than possible to enjoy alfresco feasts in this space, thanks to the dining table, pizza oven and barbecue.

Should the weather ever be a little uninspiring, there's plenty to keep guests entertained inside. In the games room alone, you'll find tables for pool and table tennis, as well as a darts board and piano. Once you've exhausted these, the cinema room complete with leather seats and surround sound is the ideal place to watch a movie or some live sports. It's just as easy to escape to the Jacuzzi bathtub and treat yourself to an unrushed soak.

You'll eventually want to head to the seaside at some point and Tresaith Beach is less than ten minutes' away on foot. It's easy to arrange watersport activities here and – if you're lucky – spot dolphins. There's also a waterfall at the far end of the sand, as well.

The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions.
